No one thought the day would come, but we have arrived where the names of Nick Saban and Alabama will no longer be married together in song along with the course of the two-word phrase, National Championships.

Per Chris Low at ESPN as of yesterday afternoon, Saban is retiring after 17 years and six national championships as the head coach of the Crimson Tide, leading the team with some of the best recruiting classes in the nation during that time. Some of those recruiting classes included some of the best blue chippers from Florida.

At FloridaHSFootball.com we looked at the best blue chippers that Saban recruited from Florida. To determine who were the best athletes that Saban recruited from Florida we looked at all the athletes that Saban recruited from Florida, we took a look at the database of commitments from On3.com which has easily tracked the averages from all national recruiting news services and includes On3, 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals to form a composite ranking to help us organize who should be on the list.

As such these this was the overall criteria, we looked at these specific factors:

Composite ranking from On3 Sports

Must have been recruited directly by Nick Saban at Alabama out of high school and not because of a transfer or readmittance to the program.

Commitments had to enroll at Alabama and complete their college playing career at Alabama.

Given that a playing career usually lasts three years before a declaration to the NFL Draft can be made only signing years from 2007 until 2020 are considered.

Excludes athletes from IMG Academy as many IMG Academy athletes were already being recruited from a previous school before those athletes finished their high school career at IMG Academy.

That leads to a formula that includes star rating, composite rating from On3 Sports, years played, total games played, and round selected in the NFL Draft to come up with a ranking that would give us an idea of who the best recruits were for Nick Saban from Florida.

How is King Henry, not No. 1 on this list? I even asked myself that after running the formula and the numbers, that is sometimes how it works when you are trying to be objective as much as possible with data. With that said Henry was a second-round pick to the Tennessee Titans in the 2016 NFL Draft after rushing for 3,591 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career with the Crimson Tide.

Call it the shocker of the day.

After most had thought that Plantation American Heritage CB Patrick Surtain Jr. would be picking LSU, he pulled off the surprise by picking the Crimson Tide at the school’s National Signing Day Ceremony.

It came down to two SEC programs after weighing offers from 32 different programs.

The 6-foot-1, 199-pound cornerback is the top-ranked recruit at his position and the No. 6 overall prospect in the Class of 2018, making his choice one of the most significant decisions and announcements of National Signing Day 2018.

Patrick Surtain Jr. goes with Alabama. "We're used to winning around here." pic.twitter.com/MFCYP9dIWb

Why Alabama? The decision was apparently straightforward for Surtain Jr.

“Why Alabama? They win championships,” Surtain Jr. told ESPN from his nationally televised announcement. “And over here we’re used to winning. I want to be a part of that winning culture.”

At 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, Campbell is both deceptively strong, fast and long, all attributes that made him one of the nation’s top lockdown corners in the prep ranks. He will head to Athens with a chance to make an impact from day one.

Campbell was one of the Patriots biggest contributors in their run to their fourth state championship in the past five seasons during the 2017 season.

Herman McCray is a two-star tight end out of Oxbridge Academy (West Palm Beach). Early Saturday morning, McCray announced his commitment to Georgia State for the 2018 college football season. McCray was being recruited by other schools, such as nearby Florida Atlantic, and a collection of teams without major national recognition, but that have fared well in recent years. Some of these schools were Iowa State, Louisville, and Virginia Tech.

McCray’s decision and the announcement came via Twitter, and uniquely, he decided to make up his mind on his birthday.

Here is the tweet in which he announced this decision:

In what may — or may not be — a so surprising fact, is that Florida leads the way in the nation of the percentage of high school football players recruited by a Division I School, according to the NCAA.

According to the tweet and graphic posted by the NCAA’s Research Division earlier on Tuesday, Florida leads the nation with 9.9% of high school football players that played in Flordia between 2013 and 2016 being recruited.

States w/ highest % of HS football players recruited by a DI school:
1. Florida
2. Georgia
3. Louisiana
4-8. (DC), MD, TN, SC, NC pic.twitter.com/N6wNkEQT57

— NCAA Research (@NCAAResearch) April 18, 2017

The percentage is derived from the number of Division I football players from the time frame provide with the number of boys football participants in 2015-16 as reported by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

The NCAA further clarified that the information is based upon names submitted to the NCAA for certification as being officially recruited.

School submits name to NCAA for certification so fairly stringent definition of recruited

— NCAA Research (@NCAAResearch) April 18, 2017

Georgia followed behind Florida at 8.6% while Louisiana followed behind at third with 8.1%. Vermont was the lowest overall state with only 0.9% of athletes being recruited by a Division I program.

Florida is no stranger though to the high number of Division I prospects that are recruited out of Florida every year. According to 247Sports.com, 30 of the Top 247 players from the 2016 class were from Florida including players that attended IMG Academy.

What could be the reason behind all this? There could be many reasons behind including the ability for athletes to participate in football activities including camps, combines and 7-on-7 on a year-round basis. However, the NCAA was not clear on their graphic why some states trended higher in percentage than other states also know for their strengths in high school football like Texas.

Now, of course, you won’t find any argument coming from the Florida High School Athletic Association on this one.

Retweet if you're proud of the fact FLORIDA IS FOOTBALL. #FHSAA https://t.co/ustaQqOIZa

There was plenty of drama on National Signing Day and the week leading up to it, but as expected there was one high school that stole the show. IMG Academy out of Bradenton had a total of 23 players commit to NCAA FBS Division One programs, the most in the nation from one school according to MaxPreps.

When you look at the talented class of seniors and break down the numbers, there are two 5 stars, ten 4 stars, eight 3 stars and two 2 stars commits. 23 players alone is a class in itself. Now you might be thinking, where would IMG Academy rank nationally if it were an actual Division One college and had recruited its high school senior class? How would that group of seniors rank nationally as a class?

Well, I thought ahead and crunched the numbers. As you might have expected based on the numbers above, this class is one of the best in the nation from a single school. How do they rank against actual top college programs like Alabama, LSU or the most recently crowned National Championship Clemson?

Using, 247Sports’ “Class Calculator”, I entered the names of each of the official commits from IMG and the calculator did the rest. I found that the class would have a projected team score of 275.72. Which yes, is very high.

Now, what does that number represent? According to 247Sports.com, “The 247Sports Composite is a proprietary algorithm that compiles rankings and ratings listed in the public domain by the major media recruiting services, creating the industry’s most comprehensive and unbiased prospect and team rankings.” It’s used to rank classes.

Where does the number 275.72 rank? This is the crazy part. According to 247’s 2017 Football Recruiting Composite Team Rankings, IMG would be ranked 8th in the nation right between LSU and Oklahoma, ahead of Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame and even Clemson. This senior class from IMG is one like none other.

I can imagine, many of you are thinking, “oh my goodness, he’s not about to make the claim that IMG could beat those schools”. Well, yes and no.

First of all, no matter your opinion of IMG Academy and the school itself, the facts are straight. The program is one of the best in the nation as showcased above. The talent and coaching are there. This year’s class is absolutely loaded and these athletes are committed to some of the best college teams in the country.

Could they knock off a top 25 team? No. I think the game would be interesting at first, but the overall level of play and training in college is much higher. The game of college football is a different animal than high school football. However, IMG definitely has some of the best overall talent.

In terms of quality and quantity for a single class, IMG ranks the highest as I noted above with 25 football players signing to Division One schools. Up next would be St. Thomas Aquinas from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Aquinas has 18 total players committed to Division One FBS schools according to MaxPreps. Using the same algorithm from 247Sports, St. Thomas Aquinas’ class has a composite score of 181.49. Although they’ve got two of the nation’s best wide receivers in Mike Harley and Trevon Grimes, not to mention Gator commit and quarterback Jake Allen, they don’t have the quantity compared to IMG. Still, Aquinas’s class would be placed right outside the top 50 in the nation behind Missouri, and in front of Texas Tech and NC State. The Raiders are a top high school team in the nation, but IMG Academy has more athletes with higher individual scores. Remember, I am talking both quality and quantity based off rankings on 247Sports.com.

As a top ten recruiting class in the nation, IMG Academy certainly has some of the best athletes. Of course, “stars” aren’t everything in football as Houston Texan JJ Watt was a two-star recruit. Still, for one high school to have 23 Division I commits and a hypothetical top ten college class is an impressive feat to say the least.
