TOP 10 ANALYSIS – AFTER WEEK 3

THE BIG PICTURE

The Panhandle region went through a significant reshuffling in Week 3, and the Capital City Classic was at the center of most of it. Choctawhatchee held the top spot after going 2-1 on the weekend — beating Sumner 27-0 on Friday, losing to Land O Lakes 20-13 on Saturday, then beating Pace 7-6 in the third-place game also on Saturday to finish 4-1. Florida High took their first two losses of the season — dropping to Land O Lakes 13-0 on Friday and then to Chiles 13-0 on Saturday — before recovering with a 13-7 win over Sumner to finish the weekend 1-2 and fall to 6-2 overall. Chiles had the best weekend of any Panhandle program, going 2-1 at the Classic with wins over Godby, New Smyrna Beach, and Florida High to climb to 5-1. Pace had the worst, going 1-3 to fall to 2-3 and drop from No. 2 to No. 5. Niceville enters the top four after a 39-0 win over Freeport, and Lincoln quietly had a strong week going 2-0 in the Silver bracket on Saturday. Fort Walton Beach dropped out entirely after going 1-3 on the week.

No. 1 Choctawhatchee — Indians Hold the Top Spot After Going 2-1 at the Capital City Classic

Choctawhatchee enters Week 4 at 4-1 with a rating of 57.05 and an SOS figure of 25.32, holding the Panhandle’s top ranking after a 2-1 weekend at the Capital City Classic. On Friday they beat Sumner — a 4A Tampa Bay program — 27-0. On Saturday they lost to Land O Lakes 20-13 in the Gold bracket before beating Pace 7-6 in the third-place game. The Indians’ record now stands at 4-1 with two wins over cross-regional Tampa Bay competition. That loss was their first of the season and came against quality cross-regional competition. Choctawhatchee’s position at the top of the Panhandle is built on the most credible body of work in the region — four wins including cross-regional results against Tampa Bay competition.

No. 2 Florida High — Seminoles Fall to 6-2 After a Difficult Capital City Classic Weekend

Florida High entered the Capital City Classic at 5-0 and left it at 6-2 after a 1-2 weekend that included two losses to programs from outside the Panhandle. On Friday they lost to Land O Lakes 13-0 — a 3A Tampa Bay finished second in the Gold bracket. On Saturday they lost to Chiles 13-0 before recovering to beat Sumner 13-7 in the fifth-place game. The two losses are Florida High’s first of the season and with one coming against cross-regional opponents at a neutral site. Their rating drops to 54.46 but they hold second in the region, reflecting that the system values the body of work — six wins and two losses against legitimately strong competition — more than the losses alone. The Chiles result on Saturday is the most significant: losing 13-0 to their Panhandle rival on the same day will shape the regional narrative heading into the second half of the season.

No. 3 Chiles — Timberwolves Are the Region’s Best Story After Going 3-1 at the Capital City Classic

Chiles had the strongest weekend of any Panhandle program at the Capital City Classic, going 2-1 to climb from 2-0 to 5-1 overall. Wednesday they beat Godby 25-0 in Tallahassee before the weekend results defined their week: a 25-6 loss to Ponte Vedra on Friday in the Gold bracket, then two consecutive wins on Saturday — 20-6 over New Smyrna Beach and a 13-0 over Florida High. The Florida High result is the headline. Chiles beat their Panhandle rival 13-0 and that head-to-head result now sits in the system as a direct measuring stick between the region’s second and third-ranked programs. At 5-1 with a rating of 53.50 and an SOS of 28.13, Chiles has built a legitimate case for the top of the Panhandle standings.

TOP 10 ANALYSIS – AFTER WEEK 2

THE BIG PICTURE

The Panhandle region’s top 10 heading into Week 3 is a tale of two distinct tiers. The top four — Choctawhatchee, Pace, Florida High, and Chiles — remain firmly entrenched with ratings well above the rest of the field, and the separation between that group and everyone below them is significant. Below that line, last week’s results created real movement and, in a couple of cases, raised legitimate questions about where some programs truly stand. What makes the Panhandle picture particularly interesting heading into Week 3 is how schedule strength is shaping the conversation just as much as wins and losses — and in several cases, the statewide SOS rankings tell a very different story than the win-loss records alone.

No. 1 Choctawhatchee — Indians Validate Their Standing, Face Stiff Capital City Classic Test

The statement made on Feb. 25 was exactly what you want from a program at the top of any regional ranking. Choctawhatchee rolled past fellow top-10 regional opponent Crestview 25-0, shutting out a program carrying the strongest schedule in the entire Panhandle top 10. The Indians carry a schedule strength figure of 27.13, which ranks 160th statewide and places them firmly among the upper tier of all Florida programs in terms of schedule difficulty. Nothing about last week gave any reason to question their position atop the Panhandle — and this week, the Capital City Classic in Tallahassee will offer the first significant test of whether that position is truly justified. The Indians draw Sumner on Friday, a program from the Tampa Bay region that will provide a genuine out-of-region measuring stick before Week 4 arrives.

No. 2 Pace — Patriots Hold After Tight Region Win, Marquee Matchup Looms Monday

Holding a 7-6 edge over Fort Walton Beach on Feb. 23 was not the dominant performance Pace may have wanted, but winning a one-score game against a fellow top-10 regional opponent carries its own kind of credibility. Their schedule strength figure of 30.41 ranking 129th statewide places them among the upper tier of schedules in Florida through two weeks. The more significant conversation surrounding Pace begins Monday, when the Patriots face Navarre in a matchup that has real implications for how the top half of the Panhandle rankings shake out. A win over Navarre would cement Pace’s hold on second. Then Friday at the Capital City Classic, Pace draws New Smyrna Beach in what figures to be another measuring-stick opportunity against out-of-region competition.

No. 3 Florida High — Seminoles’ Dominant Start Comes With Schedule Asterisk, Classic Awaits

Five games, five wins, a point differential of plus-242 — no program in the entire Panhandle top 10 has been more productive in terms of pure volume. The Seminoles beat Leon 80-0 on Feb. 25, Godby 25-7 on Feb. 26, and Bradford 26-6 on Feb. 27 to push their record to 5-0. The schedule asterisk remains real, however. Their schedule strength figure of 12.61 ranks 319th statewide, falling in the bottom third of all Florida programs, and the opponents they have beaten — Leon sitting in the lower tier of the regional standings, Godby in the middle tier — have not tested them yet. Friday’s Capital City Classic matchup against Land O’ Lakes changes that conversation immediately. Land O’ Lakes is a program from the Tampa Bay region that will provide the first legitimate outside test of whether Florida High’s gaudy numbers translate against quality competition.

Paige Halverson threw four touchdown passes and Sarah Williams caught three of them as Robinson improved to 2-0 with a 25-15 victory over Plant Monday in Tampa. Freshman Ayden Klaiber intercepted two passes for the Knights. Reese Pittman completed 31-of-41 passes for 247 yards for Plant, which fell to 0-2.

No. 8 Pace 7, Fort Walton Beach 6

The Patriots faced a tough outing to start the season at home coming up with the one point victory to start of the season 1-0.

No. 10 Miami Palmetto 19, True North (Miami) 6

Fernanda Moreno threw for 71 yards and a touchdown and also caught a pass as Palmetto improved to 2-0 with a 19-6 victory over True North Classical Academy Monday in Miami. Giselle Felix and Samantha Hernandez each had touchdown receptions for the Panthers. Takayla Strowbridge and Hernandez each intercepted a pass defensively. True North fell to 0-1.

No. 15 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) 27, West Broward (Pembroke Pines) 0

The Raiders bounced back from their season-opening loss to even things out to 1-1 on the season with a shutout over the Bobcats.

No. 17 Steinbrenner (Lutz) 21, Riverview (Riverview) 0

Megan Medina completed 12-of-19 passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing score as Steinbrenner shut out Riverview 21-0 Monday to improve to 2-0. Freshman Cecilia Leon caught six passes for 38 yards and both of Medina’s touchdown passes. Sydney Roder also saw time at quarterback for the Warriors. Riverview fell to 0-2.

No. 22 Apopka 6, Evans (Orlando) 0

The Blue Darters bounched back from their season opening loss to Dr. Phillips with a touchdown score to win it against the Trojans at home to move to 1-1 on the season.

No. 25 Harmony 27, Dr. Phillips (Orlando) 0

The Longhorns opened up their season with a dominant win on the road over the Panther to move to 1-0 on the season.

Kamryn Hughes threw a touchdown pass and rushed for yards as Booker T. Washington, ranked No. 8 in the Panhandle region rankings, blanked Gulf Breeze 19-0 Monday in Pensacola to improve to 2-0. Devani Williams hauled in three receptions for 95 yards and the score, with a long of 49 yards. Freshman Dani Slattery rushed for 50 yards on three carries. Booker T. Washington’s defense recorded three interceptions, with Angel Akins, Aubrey Pinckney and Slattery each picking off a pass. Gulf Breeze fell to 1-1.

Western won their first game in the Dave & Buster’s bracket at the Broward County Girls Flag Football Classic on Friday afternoon, pitching the shutout against the Mavericks. Wildcats move to 1-0 on the season.

The Cobras thrashed the No. 17-ranked Hawks, a Class 4A state semifinalist from last year to take home their first win in the doubleheader road trip to Daytona Beach. Click here to read more.

The Seminoles set a new scoring record as they hosted the Tornadoes. Florida High moves to 2-0 on the season.

The No. 1 team in the FLORIDA POWER 25 started off the season on top with a victory over the Longhorns. The Knights are now 1-0 while Lennard drops to 1-1 on the season.

The Broncos pitched a shutout to open up the 2026 season as they look to get back to Tampa again in May.

Apopka took one on the chin to start off the 2026 season as the team is being led by new quarterbascks and a young group of athletes and fought hard to the end in the shutout out loss, according to a post on the Apopka Flag Football Instagram account.

No. 2 Alonso defeated Plant, 19-6, in the Ravens’ season opener behind a standout performance from wide receiver Juliet Gambino, who was named the varsity Player of the Game. Gambino hauled in three receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown while also adding an interception on the defensive side of the ball. Alonso will have a week off before returning to action against Sickles on Feb. 26.

No. 9 Fort Pierce Central blanked Centennial, 37-0, in its season opener behind a big night from sophomore quarterback Kailee Grone. Click here to read more.

Carter completed 15 of 22 passes as Niceville built a 26-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Senior Layla Hughes was Carter’s favorite target, hauling in six receptions for 137 yards and two scores, including a long of 55 yards. Junior Jaz Fowler added three catches for 30 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Kate Robertson finished with four receptions for 94 yards and two scores of her own, also returning a punt 11 yards.

Freshman Jori Brechler played both ways, completing 1 of 2 passes for 22 yards while adding four carries for 22 yards and a rushing touchdown. She also caught five passes for 72 yards.

Defensively, the Eagles held Freeport scoreless through the first half before allowing 12 points in the second. Junior Carly King led the defense with four interceptions, returning them for 20 yards. Senior Kaitlyn MacCormack added three picks, while senior Marley Crump recorded a sack and an interception to round out a dominant performance.

For Freeport, the loss came in the program’s inaugural game, as the Bulldogs added girls flag football ahead of the 2026 season. Despite the lopsided score, the Bulldogs showed enough fight in the second half — outscoring Niceville 12-7 after halftime — to suggest the program is headed in the right direction.

Niceville improves to 1-0 on the 2025-26 season, while Freeport begins its program history at 0-1.

Quick Thoughts: The Red Raiders won Class 1A in the final seconds of the 2025 State Championships at the AdventHealth Training Center last May, giving them their first state title in program history. The chances of repeating are high to start the season.

State Championship Probability: 33.0%

Quick Thoughts: The team that had the Class 1A state championship snatched away in the final seconds – the Wildcats’ probability is the same as the team that beat them last May in Tampa. 4. Seminole Ridge (Westlake)

Classification: Class 3A
Region: South Florida
State Championship Probability: 32.8%

Quick Thoughts: The Hawks finally won their first state championship in nearly a decade after being a perennial powerhouse in the not-too-distant past. With the four-classification structure now in Florida flag football, the Hawks could be starting a new dynasty.

5. Alonso (Tampa)

Classification: Class 4A
Region: Tampa Bay
State Championship Probability: 32.5%

Quick Thoughts: The Ravens pulled it off in a tightly contested Class 4A state championship game last year against Wellington – one that didn’t seem that way at first – and the Ravens have a lot of history and triumphs – and letdowns – through the years. With Class 4A being the most wide-open classification, the odds are very favorable in the preseason for the Ravens to repeat as state champions – but it will take navigation through an ultra-competitive region to get there again.

6. Homestead

Classification: Class 3A
Region: South Florida
State Championship Probability: 23.4%

Quick Thoughts: The probability percentage drops quickly after the top five, and if anyone is paying attention, the landscape in Class 3A-Region 4 is highly competitive. The Broncos, who were one of the later teams to emerge in Miami-Dade County, have made a name for themselves in recent years. The Broncos would love nothing more than to get back to Tampa to erase last season’s semifinal loss.

7. Wellington

Classification: Class 4A
Region: South Florida
State Championship Probability: 23.0%

Quick Thoughts: In a tightly contested Class 4A state championship – one in which Wellington suffered a heartbreaking loss – the Wolverines are back in the probability rankings again in 2026 for winning the Class 4A state championship, but not as high as the team that beat them last May.

8. Pace

Classification: Class 3A
Region: Panhandle
State Championship Probability: 21.7%

Quick Thoughts: The Patriots have become one of the top-rated teams in the Panhandle, so it is no surprise that they are in the conversation in recent years for a run at a state championship. However, as last year showed, other teams emerged as contenders, keeping Pace from reaching Tampa.

9. Western (Davie)

Classification: Class 4A
Region: South Florida
State Championship Probability: 20.2%

Quick Thoughts: The Wildcats haven’t won a state championship in several years, but you will always see their name in the mix. With the eighth-best probability in the preseason, they have a chance once more to hoist a state championship trophy in the state’s most wide-open classification in flag football.

10. Fort Pierce Central

Classification: Class 4A
Region: Space & Treasure Coast
State Championship Probability: 19.9%

Quick Thoughts: Having quickly risen over the last few years to become one of the top teams in the Space & Treasure Coast region, the Cobras have entrenched themselves in deep playoff runs. However, a trip to Tampa would be nice to get a bigger taste of the state championship tournament.

11. Lennard (Ruskin)

Classification: Class 4A
Region: Tampa Bay
State Championship Probability: 18.1%

Quick Thoughts: The Longhorns were close to winning their first state championship in 2024, and now the goal is to capture their first state championship. However, navigating a wide-open Class 4A along with an ultra-competitive landscape in Tampa Bay means the challenges are set for 2026.

12. Choctawhatchee (Fort Walton Beach)

Classification: Class 2A
Region: Panhandle
State Championship Probability: 18.3%

Quick Thoughts: Before anyone comes after us – if the Indians were in any classification other than Class 2A, this probability would be above 20%. Why? When you have the most dominant team in the state in terms of state championships – one that has won nine straight – then you understand why there is a gulf between Robinson and everyone else. Still, the chances for Choctawhatchee are there.

13. Somerset Canyons (Boynton Beach)

Classification: Class 1A
Region: South Florida
State Championship Probability: 18.1%

Quick Thoughts: The Cougars have been one of the up-and-coming teams in South Florida and reached the state semifinals last year with a trip to Tampa to get a taste of what a state championship environment is like. Now the goal is to win it all, and their probability to start 2026 is strong.

14. Miami Palmetto

Classification: Class 4A
Region: South Florida
State Championship Probability: 18.0%

Quick Thoughts: Almost two seasons removed since winning their first state championship in program history, the Panthers would love to run it back and get a second state championship. Of course, defending Class 4A state champion Alonso stood in the way of that last year, and as we have stressed, Class 4A is the most wide-open classification in the state, so no surprise another Class 4A team is in the Top 15 in the probability rankings.

T15. Chiles (Tallahassee)

Classification: Class 3A
Region: Panhandle
State Championship Probability: 18.0%

Quick Thoughts: The Timberwolves tasted the state title game last year and now they know what it takes to get there and the odds are looking pretty good for them to make a run again, but can they do what they did last year and upset another team in their region again to get there?

T15. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale)

Classification: Class 3A
Region: South Florida
State Championship Probability: 18.0%

Quick Thoughts: The Raiders haven’t been in the flag football game as long as some of the other teams mentioned on this list, but you bet they are working towards winning a trophy to match at least their tackle counterparts. However, the depth of the Class 3A field is pretty strong and will have to navigate past several strong contenders to get to the top.
