  1. Guessing works. This week I may use a coin flip.

  2. I didn't miss any 8A games either. It was certainly the easiest of classes to predict. I didn't give Lehigh enough credit though. They steamrolled Gaither! Wharton handled their business against Mitchell as expected. Palmetto completely shut down the high powered Wiregrass passing attack. I think Palmetto vs Tech will be very interesting. I'll probably pick Tech but I wouldn't count Palmetto out either way.

  3. Back in November 1964, The Wildwood Wildcats were 9-0 and looking to be shut out the playoffs due to the fact they were sitting behind 9-0-1 Lake Wales because Lake Wales played one more class A team than Wildwood so had more points to qualify for the playoffs. Wildwood was slated to play class B Lake Weir in which they could have beaten by 100, and still would have been left out of the playoffs. So a week before the Lake Weir game, Wildwood knew this so they dropped Lake Weir and replaced them with class A Eustis. Wildwood won the game against Eustis 27-13 and it vaulted them past Lake Wales into the playoffs They beat Chaminade 28-12 then eked out a win against Columbia 12-7 in the state championship game to finish 12-0. Lake Wales lost to Winter Haven in the Polk County Bowl. Lol. So you would have to think Columbia would have beaten Lake Wales or Chaminade if Wildwood didn’t get to choose their opponent on the last week of the season to gain eligibility. LMAO!!

  4. Here it is: Anybody else notice a difference this season? Is this another residual from Covid?I generally don’t comment on officiating much, because I have found over all the years I’ve played and been a fan, bad calls come from a random black hole in the universe and Karma tends to even them out over a game, a season or a career. I’ve really only seen a couple of instances in my career where a call was nefarious.I should also say that I appreciate today’s referee. It’s a thankless job, players are increasingly disrespectful and I would have never considered doing that in my day (my coaches would have broke their foot off in my arse, if I had). I watched a kid laugh at a ref sending him to the sideline when he was doing him a favor by not throwing him out of the game. They’re is such a shortage of refs, its changed the nights we play some games in SW Florida so everyone had a crew to cover their game. However, I’ve never seen the penalties come like I have this season. I thought it was just the Tarpons, and trust me they’re undisciplined, take too many procedure or offsides penalties a game, and have been awful with unsportsmanlike calls. Most of those they earned. But last week Ft Myers in their game against us had had 195 yards of penalties. We had to be close. It simply took over the game. This year the amount of holding calls has been astronomical (was there a change in what to look for?) and the frequent ref huddles to discuss calls seems way up. I left our game last night two minutes early, right before the rain and 1580AM broadcast crew were taking about this as the Tarpons where in the process of taking 45 yards of penalties in a row.**Fast forward, Friday night Nov 5th: listening to the PC Pirates game against Kathleen in the first quarter, after refs twice singled conflicting calls on a line to gain and a PAT.Then after a slew of flags, one announcer says, "We can only hope this doesn’t turn into a flag fest like the past two games."

  5. I understand your perspective (no pun intended). And, if the districts within each region were relatively comparable, I would support the position that a district champ should host at least their first playoff game. But within regions, there are some very lopsided ones. An example which is the subject matter of a thread herein is 7A, Region 3.Another example would be 8A, Region 2, where Vero Beach traveled to Palm Beach County to beat district champs, Forest Hills, a team that would likely have struggled to beat Freedom or Ocoee here in Orlando. As such, I am not convinced that all district champs deserve to host their first game, but I do feel that they should be given a playoff berth as it is not their fault (usually) that they ended up in a very weak district. Although I was a skeptic when it came to using an RPI to determine playoff spots, I have gradually come to the opinion that on balance it is better than what we had before. I do agree with you that the calculation of the RPI could be refined and improved.

  6. Not a bad idea, Darter. But until the FHSAA comes up with a more scientific formula for determining the RPI of all the teams, I'm OK with the making the four district champs in each region the top 4 seeds (in whatever order makes the most sense). A district champion shouldn't have to play their playoff opener on the road, especially to a team from their own district that they've already beaten once - just because some mathematical formula says that other team has a higher number. Best recent example I can give you to support that argument would be the Lakeland/Lake Gibson scenario. Lake Gibson beat Lakeland in the regular season to win their district. That earned them a 4-seed, where they got the privilege of playing the 'best' wildcard team, i.e., the team that had the highest RPI among the wildcard teams, i.e., the team that had the highest RPI in the region, i.e., Lakeland. Lake Gibson got to host that game and ended up beating Lakeland for the second time to knock the Dreadnaughts out of the playoffs. Winning a district championship ought to give a team at least one home playoff game. Just my two cents.

  7. Thanks for sharing that great story as those were during my memorable HS years ('63-'66) and when we were in the old OBC conference that was usually dominated by Wildwood. Our senior year we did manage a victory against them 13-7 to give us a chance at the conference title to only get beaten the following week by the Apopka Blue Darters; they ended up conference champs. Great memories though.

  8. One easy fix is to give the district champs an automatic playoff berth, but not automatically seed them 1-4. Instead, they should be seeded based on their RPI at season end. So, the four champs could be anywhere from 1-8 based on their results.

  9. Normally I agree with your analysis, but I am sure our coach plants the seed every game that our #55 is basically unblockable and gets held every game (the game ended with 2 consecutive sacks by him). They are a very discipline team and typically would commit less penalties than ours, I accept that. That said they obviously were frustrated at times as they were flagged on at least 2 occassions for unsportsmanlike conduct. Neither team in this scenario are familiar with the refs calling the game so we typically get better officiating in the playoffs than we ever do during the regular season with the officials association from central Florida. I expect that will be the case next week with playoff officials from out of our area.

  10. Also, you have to remember that, within each region, district champs are seeded 1 through 4 based on their respective RPI's and then the four wildcards are seeded 5 through 8 based on their respective RPI's. Often times (more often than not?), the 5 seed (whose only loss may have been to a really strong team that won their district) has a higher RPI than the number 4 seed who happened to win a relatively weak district. That's why I said last week, somewhat tongue in cheek, that unless I really knew the teams, I'd pick the 5 seed over the 4 seed in most games. It's kind of like picking 9 seeds over 8 seeds or even 11 seeds over 6 seeds in the NCAA basketball tournament. From my standpoint, a 5 seed (especially a 5 seed with a higher RPI) beating a 4 seed really doesn't constitute an upset.

  11. Excellent, he has been a long time assistant prior to getting the job this year and follows precedent from Coach Nichols. They don't argue calls, berate officials or any of that; if they disagree with a call they respectfully seek clarification to get a better understanding. I think they know like most of us how tough a job it is. His comment regarding the officiating for that specific night to both the Orlando Sentinel and our local Osceola News Gazette was the same; they called the game tight, despite the reporter questioning these very 3 penalties I have highlighted.

  13. Refs paid to cheat?????? Cmon thats grade school dung! That’s cheerleader banter. The Refs are from a different county, not from Dade or Broward. AH stadium is tiny, they won’t fit half the central fans who wanna come. HAVING SAID THAT: Rockets OL & DL are the best I’ve seen. They wear u out by the 4th qtr. If u don’t have a good QB, you don’t stand a chance. Fletcher, AH RB, is a stud, but if you can’t stretch the field with your offense, u gonna get shut down. Patriots gonna fight now, but it’s the Rockets game to lose......

  14. Two good defenses. American Hertiage QB has been out since getting injured versus St. Thomas. Central offense has been clicking lately. I will take Central in a hard fought game.

  15. Tough 2nd round matchup. Could be the best two teams in all of Class 5A.

  16. So American Heritage will host Miami Central next week and from what I've been reading it's already problems. Central cheerleaders and marching band has been banned from entering the stadium and the ref's are getting paid to cheat. Any thoughts on the match up you guys
