    Rules question

Jambun, I've got another rules question for you, but since this one involves college football (I don't know if the rule is the same in high school or not; please advise) and since it involves a policy question, I'll open it up to the floor. If you happened to watch the UF/FSU game this Saturday, you may remember the play when Dameon Peirce, the Gator RB, had his helmet removed for him by a would-be FSU tackler at the FSU 5-yard line. No face-mask penalty was called (which, in my opinion, was the right "no" call). However, the Gator RB continued to run, ultimately diving into the end zone into and between two FSU defenders. The penalty was assessed against the Gator RB. If I recall correctly, he got a 15-yard personal foul penalty for continuing to play after his helmet came off. OK, I get it. It's a safety issue. They want the player to stop cold if his helmet comes off, however and wherever it may happen. In the heat of the battle, they nevertheless want the player to defy his instincts and just turn it off and stop playing. Now, here's where it gets confusing: a personal foul was called on one of the FSU defensive players (#10, I think), who was involved in the play, but I think the penalty was for his extracurricular activities after the play was over and even after the dead ball tackles were made, and not for the reason which is the subject of my question. So, here's my question: if a player continues to play after his helmet comes off (and, presumably, the whistle blows the play dead), it's a 15 personal foul against that player. But what about the players on the other team who react to the offensive player's continued play and hit him? Isn't that (or shouldn't that) be a penalty as well? Would that be a live ball foul or a dead ball foul? Is there a distinction? What if three defenders converge on a helmet-less offensive player that is still moving, should each one of them receive a dead ball personal foul penalty? If not, why not? Thanks in advance.

    Rules question

They had to come up some way to still allow a player to move past a defender who was simply lying on the ground.

    Rules question

Then if logic matters, they should have been offsetting but they weren't. They marched off the full 15 against the Gators and only half the distance against the Noles. Makes no sense.

  11. The fact that Sebring and Merritt Island can make a state semi final is a travesty and a mockery of HSFB. This is definitive proof that the classes are way too watered down and the FHSAA has to intervene. Something has got to be done. At some point someone has to call out the greed. I get consolidating classes will lessen the amount of playoff games as a whole and that where a chunk of the money gets laundered to the FHSAA big wigs. But come on. Do they really need the 2022 Maseratis and Mercedes? Can’t that meet in the middle. Get the old 2021, and cut the classes for more competitive playoffs. Sometimes you have to sacrifice

  13. Booker T. has fallen off too. Maybe it's because Ice isn't there, but they used to be a juggernaut. This just goes all the way back to the fact that they need to get rid of this attendance BS, and organize classes by power structure of these programs. That would create better districts, better regular season games, and better playoff / state title games.

  14. I really don't care about that Dade/Broward smack talk etc. I just wonder why certain schools not doing well in Dade/Bro/PalmBeach anymore like Pahokee until recently. I know Pahokee is in Palm Beach, but still. I like seeing Pahokee/Glades Central doing well. See like Blanche Ely. What happened to them, what happened to Cypress Bay. Maybe the transfer etc has put those teams on a pedal too much, but i remember those great Cypress Bay/Miramar games. Why is Norland struggling. They had Duke Johnson for a little bit. I could go on and on, but i just wonder why certain programs has fallen off.

  15. Yes and no. Aside from STA, class 7A currently does not have loaded teams. Yes, it has many good teams, but Dillard as it currently is can compete and has a shot at beating all that stands in your way. If the goal is to win a state championship, it can be done. Now if the goal is to be in the National top 25 (a mythical ranking), then you need to match the Centrals and Northwesterns in recruiting. The way things currently are in the state, as long as your school is not at capacity, it is easy to do this if you are in a large metro area, since school choice exists for all intents and purposes.

  16. You're right any school can lose and sooner or later does. Dade is no different. You said you didn't care about the 60's and 70's but those times add to Dade's overall title count? You can't have it both ways. The weird facts according to you are still that, FACTS! For example, you stated that Southridge dominated the 90s and I call bull on that. Southridge went 1-2-1 and I don't give a damn where you went to school, no one is going to look at that record and say, "Southridge dominated the 90's". I respect the fact that Southridge made it to the finals 4 times in the same decade. That is legit especially back then. However, you could've easily mentioned CC or NW as they both managed better finals records in the 90's than Southridge. From 90-99, Dade went 5-2-1, the tie and losses all came from Southridge. Segregation was prevalent everywhere in the south. Miami wasn't the only city that had to deal with that. Segregated black schools have been closed and/or converted all over Florida/America without a doubt. Polk County has the same story; Rochelle in Lakeland - fed directly into Kathleen high, Union Academy integrated into Bartow, Roosevelt in Lake Wales served Lake Wales, Frostproof and smaller communities, and Oakland in Haines City just name a few that started Polk County's early football history. Same story, albeit on a smaller scale than what happened in Miami. That's a different history lesson altogether and the detriment that followed is not one soon to be forgotten. Everyone knows that Dade has more rings. Again, not debating that. Hell, since 8 classes were created, it's been easier than ever to get to the finals. With the sheer amount of schools that Dade has, Dade arguably has the easiest path to the finals. I mean 21 titles in 10 years is unheard of and due to realignment, Dade has the good fortune to not have all their powerhouse schools in the same class. It is what it is. Florida football is what it's all about.

  18. Cocoa is a very tough, scrappy football team with a lot of heart. I met their Coach, Ryan Schneider in 2019. Really awesome guy who is dedicated to the game and his craft. He has those kids playing at a high level. I don’t think many teams are dying to meet the Tigers in the playoffs!

  19. Big urban schools are always going to poach from smaller schools with less resources. It’s unfortunate but I understand why it happens and there’s not much that can be done to stop it at a local level. As far as scheduling, it would behoove any team that expects to make a deep playoff run to schedule some tough quality opponents. Don’t have to break your back playing the IMG’s and STA’s of the world but playing some tough area opponents (i.e, Cardinal Gibbons, American Heritage, Central,) would certainly help as you get an understanding of the physicality and power of other teams. Beating up on local garbage isn’t going to prepare you for an opponent like STA or AHP in the playoffs. Have to challenge yourself in order to bring your play to the next level.

  21. I find the Dade/Broward argument rather hilarious. UP here in Central Florida, I have always considered Orlando to be: Seminole, Orange and Osceola counties with the extended area also including Brevard, Volusia and Lake counties. The truth of the matter is that it is not unusual for kids to transfer from one of all the counties above to another even though the rate of transfers seems to be greater in South Florida. With that said, I am happy for whatever team from Greater Orlando that is successful in the playoffs and see no need to get into arguments as to who is more successful or who depends on recruiting whose talent. In large, urban metro areas the argument seems kind of pointless to me.

  22. I predicted 5A-9 was a terrible district yet got *four* teams into the playoff and they collectively went 1-3 in round one, with the sole win a 24-21 over a 3-7 Tampa Chamberlain team by 7-3 Nature Coast Tech. There were much stronger teams (e.g. 5-4 Port Charlotte) that didnt make it into the 5A playoffs because the RPI formula favors districts in weak geographic regions. The RPI kept out a lot of good teams that played hard schedules but had close losses to power teams while rewarding those who played weaker schedules but piled up wins I've thought about this and I think a better solution is to have more districts, keep the RPI, but limit districts to no more than 2 teams. You could also make an exception to this rule by taking a third team from a district in the rare instance they are 0.1+ higher RPI than a second place team in another district, thus having a provision to account for the extremely strong districts that might occur.
