  1. @nolebull813 @SportsFan Hi guys, let's remember this is a high school football forum and this specific thread is regarding 2024 schedules, let's please keep it to that and be respectful to others, even to those who we may dislike or disagree with. I thought we're all grown adults here, but you two are acting childish by calling others names and saying they have a low IQ, I'm not saying you have to like PC Gridiron but at least show some respect, PC Gridiron is very knowledgeable about Polk County football and does a lot to help and promote high school athletics in his county. Yes, Kathleen has been awful the last several years and I agree with you they would have lost to most JV teams in the state, but PC Gridiron is still technically correct by referring to them as a large school, Kathleen is Class 5A compared to Victory Christian who's Class 1A. By the way, I'm not going to name names, but I know several people who have either been banned or quit this board and promised to never return, but are still on here under different usernames. Anyways, thank you for hearing me out, I hope you have a good night. By the way, @SportsFan, PC Gridiron wanted me to pass this message along to you: "Hey SportsFan Lake Wales just scored on Columbia again."

I doubt they are, Vero just usually pony up’s the $$$ and hosts them, I wouldn’t be surprised if the 4 Brevard County schools are home/away though…

  4. PC Gridiron. Lol. He’s a jabroni. “Large School Kathleen” as if that means something. They went 1-9 and would have lost to most JV teams in the state.

  5. No doubt they are working to "GET" kids to transfer in as we lost a couple of very good players to them in the last couple of months. The change came when they brought the 1 year HC down from Leesburg where he put them on the map and into the playoffs somehow managing to "GET" players from some of the surrounding schools. No doubt it is happening.

  6. The difference that I see is that colleges and universities can recruit (in fact, they have to in order to be competitive). More importantly, the local car dealership can be loyal to a particular college or university and under new NIL rules, it can pay a student-athlete. As it stands now, that same car dealership can be loyal to a particular high school football team, but as soon as they start providing payments to players, they run afoul of the FHSAA rules prohibiting "impermissible benefits." This whole section would have to be changed: "37.2 IMPERMISSIBLE BENEFIT 37.2.1 General Regulation. No school employee, athletic department staff member, representative of the school’s athletic interests or third parties, such as an independent person, business, or organization, may be involved, directly or indirectly, in giving an impermissible benefit to any student or any member of his/her family for the purpose of participating in interscholastic athletics, or to any student-athlete who already attends a school. 37.2.2 Specific Prohibitions. Specifically prohibited arrangements, assistance or benefits include, but are not limited to, the following: 37.2.2.1 School-based financial assistance of any kind that exceeds the amount for which a student has been approved by an independent financial needs assessment company that is recognized by the FHSAA or otherwise is in excess of any supplemental assistance provided by a school to each and every student who qualifies for financial assistance. 37.2.2.2 Cash or like items, such as credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, gift certificates, coupons, or vouchers. . . .." What's wrong with keeping high school sports purely amateur? Unlike colleges and universities, no one (including/especially the high schools) is really 'profiting' from the name, image or likeness of a high school athletes, are they? My kids played with some pretty high-profile guys, but I don't recall Dick's selling jerseys with their names printed on the back. Are high school football players from Florida going to start fleeing to other states to pick up a few grand? Perhaps a kid from the panhandle or Jacksonville might get pulled north to Georgia or Alabama for a few bucks, but I can't see any south Florida kids making the move north unless the money was huge (like a once-in-a-generation kid). Let NIL screw up the college game, but keep the high school game as pure as possible.

  7. It's possible that they find their stride by week 5, but at the moment we just don't have the on-paper talent to compete with teams like Miami NW, IMG National, Cocoa, or Bishop Verot. If Venice can find a way to go 7-3 with that schedule I would be happy

  12. I as well as the majority of parents are happy our state legislature isn't pushed around by unions like other states otherwise our school aged kids wouldn't have even been back in the classroom for almost an entire year. So you have a right to bash our lawmakers while I have the right to cheer them on.

  13. Just to be clear, no one was suggesting to base teachers pay on a poll of students. To think that would be "Simple-minded" as you previously suggested. It was simply an observation on the fact that they have that ability to discern, yet the administrator responsible and being compensated for their performance can't or won't. Seems like an oxymoron to me as does the fact most school districts somehow manage to figure out among the thousands of teachers and dozens of separate schools who the "Teacher of the Year" is. The criteria used in this selection process could be used to rate teachers on a three-tier system of above average, average and below average with corresponding compensation. One can come up with all kinds of reasons why it won't work, but it really boils down to the union and teachers themselves. With regards to the coaches pay, I recently read another article in the Orlando Sentinel written by sportswriter Chris Hays that this proposal isn't being considered in this years legislative agenda but not until next year. He does accurately point out that one of the biggest obstacles to overcome is the teachers themselves not wanting to have said coaches compensated properly for the extra work. He states that they would revolt. Sad when you think about it as for years I sit in the stands to many athletic events for OHS and rarely see teachers there to support one of their students or even their school at these activities. Seems like at too many schools whatever we are doing today certainly isn't working.

  15. Most jobs dont require you to take homework home and grade papers and make lessons and then take classes to recertify and then take classes to try to earn a real wage either by getting a masters. Plus alot of teachers coach and get paid very little for alot of work. A assistant fb coach usually gets around 3k for the following work. Spring ball 20 practices and 5 days for conditioning. 4 days a week lifting in summer, 7 on 7 practices and tournament from Jan -April and then in summer again. Practice from august to mid November unless you make a run and go till December. If teaching is such a great pay gig and easy job then why are 1 in 5 teachers leaving the profession or state to teach somewhere else.

  17. That claim requires evidence. It may or may not happen in some places. You can be certain that a school like St. Frances in Baltimore pays good money. Why else would kids pack up and leave somewhere like Central Florida to live and play in the 'hood of Baltimore for a "school" that doesn't have a home stadium?

  23. I've watched high school football all across the southeast up to Northern VA, and in terms of community/fan support, Florida is dead last. I'm guessing that the large transient population that doesn't have community ties is part of the reason. The high school back in my old podunk Virginia hometown with a population of around 4.5K will draw 3K or more for home games, and most of those fans have been supporting the school for decades. Most of my Florida game attendance has been in Volusia, Orange, Brevard, Broward, Palm Beach counties and here with the Treasure Coast schools from Sebastian River to South Fork. With few exceptions over the years, the crowds have been mostly students and parents/relatives of players, cheerleaders and band members.

  24. As Joshua Wilson's article reported, a first draft of an FHSAA NIL policy has been published. The next step is a FHSAA Board of Directors' workshop on April 21 regarding the NIL policy. How long it will take this process to come up with an actual NIL policy is anyone's guess. The FHSAA would seemingly want to develop its own policy before the Florida state legislature gets involved. Since the legislature does not meet again until March 2025 (barring a special session called by the governor), the FHSAA has almost a year to work with. One other possibility is an NIL lawsuit being brought by a student-athlete (and his lawyer/agent) against the FHSAA (similar to past lawsuits against the NCAA). Again, an incentive for the FHSAA to develop a policy in a timely manner (with all the good and bad aspects it will likely bring). https://floridahsfootball.com/2024/02/26/fhsaa-board-of-directors-drafted-nil-language-discussed-while-rural-classification-sees-more-changes/

  25. Would be interesting if Bucholz, Homestead and Booker T are home/away two year contracts. That would be some long and tough road games for the 2025 season. I like that they are scheduling tougher the last few years. Would be crazy if they returned the favor next year and traveled down to Dade twice.

  32. I haven’t heard anything. This does seem way more than they can handle. Since the schedule has been out for a while, I feel like you would’ve heard something if they were stacking talent faster than anyone else. The Coach is from Arkansas, and when he came to Florida to play a game years back, he found the worst team he can find. So it’s ironic now he wants to play one of the toughest schedules in the state. Lol

  34. Often unspoken in this debate is the matter of fan support. The states paying much better than Florida also have much better/more substantial fan support. This makes paying coaches much higher salaries or stipends possible. The fan support in Florida is underwhelming to say the least. The state doesn't have a single program- anywhere- whose fan support would be considered impressive or even comparable to the top programs in Georgia, etc. Lakeland has long been considered one of the best in this area, but the program has undeniably been weakened by the emergence of private schools Victory and Lakeland Christian. It's not just that some good players pass on playing for Lakeland to instead play at a Christian school, but also families and thus fan support that previously went to Lakeland have ended up at one of the privates. The big dawgs in Miami sometimes get huge crowds out to Traz Powell, but financial contributions to programs are inconsistent at best. The Panhandle is more similar to Georgia and Alabama in culture, but they haven't produced a true state power in decades. The relatively new Sumner program might be one of the best bets to become a true power in this area. But, I'm not sure of the scale of success that is possible for them.

  35. Everyone, well a lot of programs want the instant notoriety that comes with of playing OOS. There was a time when those games happened between neighboring states that were close in proximity OR perennial powerhouses that had something to prove against other powerhouses. Now it's a free-for-all and it severely diminishes the worth of those games. I can respect Coach Castle for knowing when to risk it and when to sit his ass down, lol.

  36. We can look to the college game for ideas on how to work around rules. A little creativity, along with clever use of euphemisms, goes a long way. Businesses like car dealerships have long been free to enter into sponsorship deals with local football programs. The businesses can choose who to sponsor or not. Then, with such an agreement in place, commercials and promotions can be held featuring players from the sponsored program, which can be called an "NIL" deal. Of course there is ample room for debates around the "spirit" vs. "the letter" of the law. You're not wrong; there are just ways around the issues you raise. (None of which are for the betterment of the game.)

  37. CAI was such a farce program. The school only has 70 or so students so you know at least some of those 40+ football players probably weren't even required to attend class or were "attending" virtually. No tears from me seeing them fold up shop. I guess football didn't grow the stature of their strange scientology school like it was originally intended.

  40. You missed the point of my union post. Teacher unions in strong union states have power. Florida unions have zero. They cant strike and the school board can implement a contract without the unions approval. Florida unions are not preventing any raise in Florida. The state has attacked a straw man here.

  41. As a general rule, I am not a big supporter of unions in the public sector in particular. They certainly had a place in the private sector during the industrialization of our nation, but today not so much. I have no first-hand experience with unions representing our local law enforcement or firefighters but my interaction with the teachers union over several years in that profession is the basis of my opinion.

  46. Teachers' unions should be vehemently opposed until if/when they demonstrate that their purpose is to benefit and push forward education. Has any teachers' union pushed back against the sort of bullshit pushed by, for example, the Chicago teacher's union? CTA said that the push to reopen schools was an example of white supremacy. If you can't call that out for the complete and utter bullshit that it is, you deserve to be opposed. (For the record, I left my union this school year).

  48. The same argument for teachers/coaches can be made for nurses, law enforcement, and other first responders, etc. None of them are paid what they are "worth". From an economic standpoint, no one would willingly pay someone more to do a job when someone will do the same job for less (i.e. supply and demand). As long as enough people are willing to work for current wages in these fields, in many cases out of the goodness of their heart or at significant personal financial sacrifice, the government and corporations see no need to raise wages. Unfortunately, the nonmonetary, societal benefit that individuals in these fields provide is often not recognized (coming from the spouse of a 35+ year educator). When we wake up one day and have a drastic shortage of workers in these fields, our society will be in big trouble, let alone high school football.
