The ratio for schools is almost universally the same, the few that are all boys or all girls have their populations doubled, so I don't see the need to clarify. I disagree with it being a participation trophy. I think schools want to play against schools with similar abilities. I once read a book that asked coach how do you ideally schedule. The answer was 1 "easy" game, one game versus a team on your level and one game that would challenge you and your team. I think most coaches want games against teams they can compete against, to build that winning culture or any culture at all. ____ I still believe a promotion/relegation that takes into account two years of data for football (one year for other sports) that puts the best 16 teams up and sends the best 16 teams down would create a more fair system. Since the state legislature now allows students to transfer for athletic reasons (still can't be recruited though), this means that the population numbers are a guide, but not a rule. Do good teams go through ruts? Sure, let them move down until they can get themselves out of the rut. I look at teams like Paxon(5A), Stanton(5A), and I guess Wolfson (3A) now in Jacksonville or Suncoast (5A) in Palm Beach County. Schools that have football programs, but these programs struggle tremendously due to being 100% academic magnet schools. Is their talent really on the level of other 5A schools? Probably not, so maybe we need to move them down. At the same point schools like C-M, Trinity Christian, Bolles, probably have the talent to be competitive at a 5A level. One of the goals of the FHSAA has to be to ensure the growth of the sports they help manage. They can help do that by ensuring that schools feel like they have a fair shot of competing against other schools in their classification. While small rural schools face unique challenges, thus the creation of 1A-Rural, it is important to note that the rural schools generally have been much happier as they feel they are competing against teams of the same caliber. Notice the complaints about Madison County being in 1A, is it because they aren't rural, above 600, or that they are good? I would say it is the 2nd one, people feel they aren't a small 600 person school despite what the student population reports say.

Holmes County looking for new coach

You know I am on board with this, I do think it would be every two years (solely so that it isn't a one year fluke situation), but I don't think you need to do re-alignment based on population if the relegation/promotion system worked. You would still do realignment due to the new teams move up and down to even out the districts, regions, etc, and I would suggest 10-16 teams as that is about one per district to move up. Any more than that and you risk elevating teams that are good, but not excellent.

I know Americans hate the idea of English Soccer Pyramid, but it honestly makes the most sense when we are talking about teams of different caliber competing against each other. Sure a higher division teams loses against a lower level team occasionally, but for the most part the premiere teams continue to rise. The same is true in football. One of the things I liked about the FHSAA's proposal for other sports was to put teams into classifications based on skilled level. In sports like basketball, soccer, and softball, they could do promote and relegate every year since most games are home and home already. It would take many years for a 2A team to end up in 8A.

Yes, a million times yes. When we talk about "regions being weak", what we are really talking about is that there is a little also ran programs and certain teams will face little competition on the way to state finals. But imagine if 80 teams were of a similar caliber. no, they won't all be state championship worthy, but let them fight it out. Allow the teams that struggle to field a team to start in 1A and work their way up. I know that population size is a key factor in success, but it isn't the only factor. Allow good teams to rise up, allow bad teams to fall. Eventually the really good teams will be in 8A, the really bad teams will be in 2A. I think conferences are useful if they are done the right way. I think many small schools have done conferences with some success as their team rebuilds or becomes resurgent. Some teams know they are never going to be able to compete with a Miami Northwestern or a Trinity Christian or an Armwood, and there might be 8-10 schools in a similar situation. I think in today's world though it takes a different kind of coaching and focus to make those conference championships worth something to the kids. Where I grew up, you had League Titles, County Championships, and State Championships. While League titles (similar to district titles) were nice, the fans cared just as deeply about the County Championship as they did state titles. County Championships were based on the fact that you had to have a 500 record by a certain point in the season, a committee would seed the teams, and you would play the games. I think attendance at the county championship was usually better than the state championships. A county championship was against a team that you knew and was played locally in the community college gym, while the state championship was played hours away against a team you most likely never heard of. In other words, coaches had to make a decision on where they were going to put their energy.

I used to like when all of the southern half of the largest classification was nothing but Miami Dade and some Broward schools. That made for some fun football. Palm Beach County schools were in region 2 to show you how far south the southern half of the classification was.

I believe you have to choose to be in 1A (less than 600, rural designation), they must have not chosen to be in 1A.

ESPN turned signing day into a made for TV special. We have seen a pro do it (LeBron's Decision). Why should be surprised that teenagers emulate what they see on sports TV. It is not surprising then teenagers and twitter allow themselves to their 15 minutes of stardom before they become anonymous person in the crowd again. I blame a culture that says the only person that matters is yourself. A culture where building something is seen as a sucker's choice when there are is already a well paved path for them. We no longer just have helicopter parents who hover around at practices. We have parents who mow down every obstacle in the way of their child so that their child never has to struggle for success. Even those who seem to make sacrificial choices sometimes seem to only to do it so they get ahead in life. I am amazed by the number of Teacher for America and PeaceCorps individuals who seem obsessed with the idea of what Teach for America and Peace Corps or working on a political campaign will do for their job prospects rather than the good they are doing.

I do want to say by using the previous years attendance and not knowing which teams are going independent or which teams are stepping up from independent, my 2/3 and 1/3 classification got 87.5% of the teams in the right classification, not bad honestly. Many of the changes happened at the fringes due to less teams playing in classification football.

What is going on at Wolfson? They used to be a 2000 person school, they were highly competitive in boys basketball because of the stability at the coaching position. I know that Atlantic Coast was supposed to relieve overcrowding, but I thought the overcrowding was a little at Wolfson, and mostly at Mandarin, Englewood, and Sandalwood. Any reason for the cutting of Wolfson's population by 2/3 over the past 16 years. Englewood's population has remained stable and Atlantic Coast's population has increased since they opened but not by that much. I think the FHSAA did a good job, I will only disagree with one thing on their FAQ "A: After traveling the state this past year, the consensus the FHSAA heard from its athletic directors and coaches was that they wanted an equal number of teams by classification, an even number of teams in each district and region and no three-team districts. Moving schools would go against that sentiment and would create uneven classifications, regions or districts. The staff has thoroughly reviewed the assignments and do not see any schools that are geographically isolated that would require movement to another classification (FHSAA Policy 12). To maintain the wishes of our constituents, the FHSAA will not be accepting appeals." I do not think they lived up to the part where are equal number of teams per classification considering 1A-4A have 40ish teams and 5A-8A have 80 teams. Again, the FHSAA would have done better to remove one class and then do equal size classes. Instead of the current 1/3 and 2/3 rule they follow.

When I look at this map, I see Madison fitting better into 3 than 2 in my opinion. Additionally, if you pull Madison out of Region 3 and put them in Region 2, Region 3 only has 8 teams instead of 9, Region 2 goes to 10 team. Eliminate 1 regular season game (solely to shrink how many potential games students play overall) Conference Championships on Thanksgiving Weekend Power 5 Champions, Best Group of 5 Champion, 2 Wildcards 2 weeks later, games played on home fields (or in Bowl cities in big cities that aren't Tier 1 games). Orlando, Detroit, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, San Diego come to mind or if you really want to help, put 2 quarterfinal games in 1 city. Massive influx of tourists from 4 teams. 2 weeks later, games played in Big Bowl Games (Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Rose, Jerry World, Peach) 1 week later, game played in one site.
