Cypress Creek beat Bloomingdale 50-41 in the first round of the playoffs that year.

Per the FHSAA 2004 brackets, Cypress Creek lost to Mandarin in the first round of the playoffs in 2004 by a score of 24-0.

Again, I could be wrong, but I really can't remember Cypress Creek ever winning a playoff game. I checked 2003 and 2005 brackets to see if you were off by a year, but CCHS did not make the playoffs those two years.

Cypress Creek/Orlando was not on the list because they did win a playoff game back in 2004.

They did make the playoffs that year. I don't recall them winning, though. I could be wrong, but don't think they have ever won a playoff game. BTW, their two best players that year, brothers, did not attend Cypress Creek but were allowed to play as their school did not offer football.

There are a number of newer programs in the Orlando area of late.  It is going to be interesting to see if the talent there is deep enough to support these programs at winning levels.

Wekiva and Apopka can both survive and thrive as winning programs. There is enough talent there. Windermere High will probably not hurt West Orange too badly. Both have a shot at being winning programs.

Some of the other newer schools have spread the talent a little too thin.

    East Central FL

    Cocoa Beach-6                          1964

    Colonial-2                                   1958

    Poinciana-1                                 1991

I am a little surprised that Cypress Creek High opened in 1988 (it could have been 1989), does not appear on this list. I am pretty sure that in the past 19 seasons they have made the playoffs just once (with either a 5/5 or 6/4 record). And I doubt that in the first 10 years of its existence its record was any better. Things  got worse when Freedom opened in 2004 and took most of the existing talent with it.

Of the three you cite from East Central Florida, Cocoa Beach and Poinciana are terrible and probably will not get any better in the foreseeable future. Colonial has also been terrible. But I happen to think that if a good, patient coaching staff spent four or five seasons there, a winning program could be built.

In a game that surely ranks as one of the greatest upsets in Florida state finals history, this team won the state championship by defeating an undefeated, defending state champion that had been ranked #1 in the country that season.  Who is that team and who did they upset?

That one's easy: Bartow over Bolles 14-13. That game was played in the mid 1990s. Probably 1996 or 1995, if I remember correctly. Bolles came into the game 14-0, but got upset.

Used to be possible to score 100 before running clock but that is a lot of points

That would be a touchdown every minute and 20 seconds or so. Clearly there could have been no running clock in that game. but even without, you have to ask the question: did the defense make even one single, effective tackle or pass breakup?

  6. Playing college sports is the equivalent of working at least a half time job while being in school. For certain sports in certain high powered programs, it's the equivalent of a full time job. Many college coaches in marquee sports make seven figures a year and the power 5 programs get a hefty chunk of revenue for their troubles. In short it is big business.

Add to the above the fact a college degree no longer gets one the type of job it did 15 to 20 years ago. And for their troubles, most college athletes never get to play professional.

With all the aforementioned in mind, I believe that athletes should be paid a reasonable stipend for their "work." By doing this, some of the under the table corruption may be weeded out. Hell, if you got a research assistantship, in addition to tuition, it comes with a stipend.

  7. There are few 7 year olds, if any, that one can say with near certainty will be a future college star. Too much physical development left, no assurance that the interest or work ethic will be there, kid develops other interests, family circumstances, etc., etc.

None of this makes any sense.

Best DP team of all time was either 2010, 2017, 2016, 2013 or 1997. The 1997 team went 10-0, blew everyone out, but blew a big lead in round 1 against Oviedo in the biggest upset in program history.

The bold underscored were the two best DP teams in my opinion. Both 2017 and 2016 had weaknesses. Give them credit, though. One did what no other did and the other should have done likewise if not for a 4th quarter stumble.

Through his total tenure, Rolle compiled a 172-53 record as a head coach while being a two-time winner of the Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year award and receiving national attention for his leadership of Northwestern’s 2007 mythical national championship team – which is still regarded as one of the best high school football teams in recent history.

    Good job DarterBlue!

Personally, I thought the 2006 Miami Northwestern team was better than the 2007 team. They were made up of largely the same players. However, the 2007 team did not have a good running back like the 2006 team. It also seemed to live off its talent more than the 2006 team did. Just my opinion, though.

  10. At the heart of the problem, I think, is the fact that we have become a society that wants instant results. Thus, building and maintaining a program with the readily available talent is too difficult and takes too long. The same applies to so many other areas of society, from college sports to work to athletics in general.

Ignored in all of this are the long term effects. Some just choose to not see these effects although it does not require clairvoyance to do so. Others feel that by the time they manifest themselves, they will be long gone, so why worry.

All of this is symptomatic of a society in decline. If we fail to look deep within and make necessary changes, the future of the USA may be worse than its past or current state. Perhaps I am being too gloomy. I certainly hope this is the case.

belle glades is one of the poorest area's in Florida. There have been many articles and documentaries of the rough upbringing in the Muck.  Are they all lying?

The area around Lake Okeechobee reminded me of the most rural areas in Jamaica when I worked on a job there for a week in 1993. It was eye opening to me, as it was by far the most poor rural area I had seen in my time in in the USA up till then and since.

That does not necessarily mean the people who live there are worse off than many kids living in some large cities in the USA. It comes down to a number of factors, some intangible, when making a determination about living conditions.

I know they own patents and many businesses people have no idea about. Everyone knows Halliburton but Schlumberger is actually over 2x the size of them, heck Darter I’m surprised you even know the term “Oil Service Company” most people have no idea about it but they know our other term the big bad F word... Frac lol

A long time ago, when I lived in NYC, and you were probably a baby based on when you played for Vero, I had a job offer to work at Corporate. I ended up not taking it then, because I did not want to move down South at that time, and was told I would have to after a year.

Kind of funny how that works.

I hope FL pulls a sweep, I live in SW CO now and the local team Montrose were state runner ups in there class a few years ago and most decent FL teams would of beat them easily throughout the season. It seems a lot of these CO teams beat each other up and walk with swagger but I’ve seen a lot of really bad coaching and lots of luck with no real test. Not much community support for the teams either, some schools yes but mostly not. Let them come and play and get an experience, not familiar with the FL teams but if they got decent coaching then we have a chance to sweep.

Trelle, you sure get around! You must have lived in half the fifty states by now.

Regarding the Florida teams, they are not among our best. From where I am at, a sweep by Florida would be very unlikely.

Without getting into any personal details, I can tell tell you that I am close to individuals, friends and family members that have attended, currently attend and would/(would have) potentially be attending Stoneman Douglas High School.  I am somewhat content with facts coming out and evolving with this case, but there are still a few key factors that I hope will be revealed in the coming days. I can say that some of this may have to do to with age and privacy.  There is another key matter in this case that I hope will soon be revealed that theoretically may blow some of your minds, and for some it will really make you think about governing powers....

Man, you are just stoking my curiosity. But for real, though, regardless of what comes out, I can't see any way to rationalize what this young man did. He has permanently affected the lives of the surviving in a very negative way. And he has taken the lives of many innocent people.

Man as a former coach in Broward this hurts a lot .. you couldn’t stop this situation but I have a lot of questions about this situation... This is crazy!!!! That 19 year ol man is a lame man!

Call him sick, call him evil, it makes no difference. To come to a school with the intent to commit mass murder is very, very disturbing. I understand individuals have beefs with individuals. But I am sure half of the people he shot he didn't even know.

This is really hard for me...I knew Coach Feiss and sometimes would talk to him at Publix.  I also believe I may have coached one of the victims who I believe is listed as missing....

I have never seen so many local and national news trucks in Coral Springs/Parkland area

I can tell everyone that this situation is a lot deeper then what you are seeing on the news.  There is a lot of investigating going on right now that will be confirmed in the coming days.  I will just let it come out in the news.

Hang in there, Broward. Coach Feiss sounds like a great guy. If he is gone, I am sure his memory will live on in the students and athletes he served. I don't know why the shooter did what he did. Perhaps we never will.

Unfortunately, acts of evil are a part of the human condition.
