  1. My heart felt condolences go out to all the victims, their families and friends. This is very, very sad and traumatizing.

Unfortunately, this type of event has become commonplace to the point where it is not that surprising anymore. A rational, sane approach to all of this would be societal self examination leading to concrete steps to significantly reduce the incidence of this type of event in the future. I am no anti second amendment individual. But I am forced to ask the question: what kind of civilian needs or should have a weapon that can fire off hundreds of rounds per minute? Seems to me that such a weapon should be restricted to the military. But what do I know.

As things stand, we must learn to live with this type of situation happening on a fairly regular basis, as I doubt anything will be done to reduce its likelihood.

#1-Spent all of his time coaching at one school and retired within the past few years

Don Drinkhahn of South Dade would be the first one. Never won a title; but was there forever. Team finally won in 2013 shortly after he retired.

I don't know the other coach.

    1. Bill Castle (Lakeland)

    2. Byron Walker (Archbishop McCarthy)

    3. Bill Gierke (Orangewood Christian)

Gierke has never won a state title. His mentor and coach, Larry Gergley, I believe, did at Bishop Moore before moving on to Winter Park where he coached Gierke.

I stand corrected. It is Gierke. He tied Southridge for the 1991 5A title at Evans High.

#3 is ....Tigers 2017 is getting very close ..it's not Ziglar...and I need a first name, too.  He is at a private school now.

    1. Bill Castle, correct

    2. Byron Walker, I assume that's correct.

    3. Larry Gergley

Up on our scoreboard we have the years when Vero appeared in the final four and I noticed that mostly in the 80s is when we made it and in the 90s we sporadically went not as consistent as the 80s.....But I also noticed that the last time we made a final four was in 1998 and I'm like wow it's 2018 meaning if we don't get past the regional finals this year then it will be over TWO decades that we haven't gone.....i think our program needs to focus SERIOUSLY on deep playoff runs instead of trying to count regular season wins, two decades two decades smh

There are programs as old as Vero's that have never made a final four. At least VB is a perennial playoff team.

You mean even a bigger challenge than going to Merritt Island and facing the threat of American Heritage, Cardinal Gibbons or Bishop Moore every year?

More competition in the playoffs at Merritt Island. But more readily available talent there, too. I guess it would be a wash in the grander scheme. If he went to MI, he would need some of the Cocoa talent to follow him there.

  7. Great analysis, Laz. I don't disagree with your conclusion on its face. However, could it be possible that if non power 5 teams had a real shot at making the FBS playoffs, they would become more attractive to top flight recruits? And, if this is so, wouldn't it help reduce the disparity to some degree between the Power 5 and non Power 5?

    Thoughts?

I think the players have a case. I don't blame them for pursuing it. College football is high stakes. Players, legally, get little but their scholarship. Some schools and coaches have a lot of financial rewards from how it's set up. So the incentive for the athletes is to play is the "dream" of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (NFL draft).

I have been in extensive talks with coach Johnson and he is the one who let me know about the possibility of playing Lakewood.

Okay. So it's still in the works but not finalized, yet? If Lakewood is pretty average, then I agree, this would be a good game for Oak Ridge.

From what I saw of Oak Ridge at the Apopka game last year, they have real good athletes. Not sure how many graduated, but if they bring back the core of that team, then Coach Clint Johnson will have a decent team this year. It would not hurt if a couple of the basketball and soccer guys decided to play football this upcoming season, too. Oak Ridge has strong teams in both those sports.

Hearing Oak Ridge may play Lakewood. Will update as the info comes

I will see if I can get a confirmation of this. Unless Lakewood is a pretty bad California team, Oak Ridge will probably be in trouble. They have athletes, but are young and the current HBC is just starting his second year. Prior coach took a lot of their talent to Jones.

I think 2 is right. Not sure about 1. Did either Chamberlin or Astronaut ever win a ship? Off the top of my head, and I stand corrected, I can't recall either winning a title.

That is a tough quiz. You have done at least one better than I did. I was laying a goose egg!

Only 15 of 48 teams in 4A had a winning record.  15 of the 33 teams with losing records had 2 wins or less.  So, nearly 1/3 of 4A teams only won 2 games or less.

I just looked at 2A, 3A, 5A and 6A and it looks like a fairly even split of teams with winning and losing records.

We know what happened to Booker T.  I just randomly checked Mulberry.  3 of their 6 losses were to class 1A/2A schools.

    Thoughts?

Some of the better 4A schools, Bolles and Jones come to mind, bailed for 5A, as they wanted to be in districts. That, and the fact that 4A has lacked depth for the past several years.

Not sure why this has been so. Could it, perhaps, be just one of those random cycles that affect the different classifications from time to time?
