    Western 20, Deerfield Beach 17 (Class 8A); Fleming Island 31, Robert E. Lee 26

I would say these two should have made it.  Deerfield Beach was the pick for a lot of people to win 8A.  Lee was probably most peoples pick to make it out of 7A Region 1 and to the state semifinals.  Good list

I agree that those two were very good candidates for upset of the week, particularly Deerfield Beach losing to Western. This was Western's first ever playoff win. Not as shocked by Lee, as they had stumbled a bit as the season progressed.

Both teams score more imo but 28 is the lowest points scored by Vero this year so I can see why

This will be Vero's toughest game since Oscar Smith/Viera. However, I think they win a close one.

In the Regional finals if they get DP at home, I think they avenge last year's loss. If they have to travel to Osceola, I think that would be a 50/50 game and am not prepared to make a call at this stage.

wow.  Playoff game under 100 people.

Darterblue I was actually disappointed in the crowd at the Apopka game.  40% their home side is taken up by the band and the dancers and the other 60 % was not full.  They do have a lot of people that watch in the endzone.  I would say there was probably 2500 there.  I was expecting close to 4k.

True they have a decent size band and an award winning dance troupe. I would say the other 60% was more or less full. Certainly when you add those in the end zone and around the fences, it would amount to full stands if they were there. But I agree, the facility could have held more fans.

Wekiva at Apopka had more fans and even that game did not have as many show up as in some past Wekiva/Apopka games. I think the cost of games in relation to people's economic circumstances may be affecting paid attendance all around. The state finals, for example, with the notable exception of last year, has been drawing fewer individuals over past 7 or 8 years.

About 25 people on Dillard side which about around the second quarter and beyond mark it reduced to about 10 and at the start of the 4th Qt it was about 5 or 4 fans left in the stands

Carol city had about 50 to 60 fans come out and about mid way threw the third beginning 4th it reduced to about 25 30 fans for them

You're kidding me, right?! Dillard has a home playoff game and only about 25 fans show up? I mean, even if Apopka were really down and/or were playing a scrub team, at least a few hundred would show up for a regular season home game.

Take a look cuz I'm pickin Vero to host Apopka to go to the state finals...called it when the brackets came out

Both Vero Beach and Apopka have formidable opponents to hurdle before you would host a semifinal game against Apopka. If such a game occurs, it would be an interesting one. VB's wide open offense plus Akeem Dixon versus the Apopka single wing.

At this juncture, I don't think the odds favor this match-up. But if it happens, I will make my first trip to the "Citrus Bowl."

    Good win Darter, next.....

Good win for the Bucs, too. Congrats!

I was going to make it to Municipal Stadium next week if Apopka had lost. But we are still in it and face Winter Park at their house next week.

Seem like if u get in by points and not winning your district u get a more favorable matchup

It all depends. Some teams do and some don't. One thing this new system guarantees is that you get a variety of matches in the early rounds that are much different than the old system which paired the same districts together each year.

  8. It sounds like Dillard was a good team that just could not score enough in the tough games. You held a number of good teams but could not find a way to beat them. Dillard won all the games it was expected to win except the Western one. But Western proved they were a much better team than thought as they win their first round playoff game.

We had them stopped and they made big plays to take lead with a minute left

Columbia drove into field goal range in last minute then had snap over holders head on a kick that would have sent it into overtime

Sorry about the loss Columbia. Bad way to end your season. I have to believe you are better than Lincoln. But it was just one of those nights. Cheer up!

  10. The final score was a bit misleading. At the half Apopka led 21-14 and at the end of the third 28-21. The wheels fell off for Seminole in the fourth quarter as, among other things, they lost their starting QB after helmet to helmet contact with a defender. In the 4th, Apopka had a pick six and also returned a fumble recovery for another touchdown.

Hard to believe that at one stage Seminole led 7-0 in the first after Apopka turned the ball over on downs on their first drive.

This was not a perfect game by Apopka as they threw an interception and allowed a lot of yards through the air during the first three quarters. However, it was probably their best full game of the year. Next week they face the unbeaten Winter Park Wildcats at Showalter field. WP beat Spruce Creek 42-14.

Cardinal Gibbons beat Jones 43-30 on Jones's home turf further demonstrating that they are one of the best teams in the State of Florida.

Elsewhere, Wekiva destroyed Lake Mary 51-0 and Boone dispatched Flagler Palm Coast by two scores.

If Apopka can beat Winter Park, a rematch with Wekiva in the Regional final may be in the cards.

This is a damn shame. Only 2 teams (Cocoa and Raines) are the only teams in 4A that are in the top 40 of the state.

What a weak ass class. More proof they need to consolidate.

3A only has a few teams worth a damn too. Chaminade, Oxbridge, Mel CC and CCC are the only ones with a pulse.

Pretty damn sad that only 6 teams in 2 classes total can be considered competent, quality teams.

    What do we want? Consolidation!!!!!

When do we want it? Now!!!!

I see you are practicing your political activism, there!:D

  12. The two hardest to predict games involving Central Florida teams in the first round of the playoffs are:

    1. Cardinal Gibbons at Jones

    2. Apopka at Sanford Seminole

I think it's a pity Gibbons and Jones meet up in the first round. I say this because I believe that they are two of the four best teams in 5A and that both are top 15 (probably top 10) in the state. I have not seen Gibbons on film, so whatever I say is prefaced based on results and the comments of others that have seen them. Gibbons took American Heritage to the the limit. They also blew out South Ridge, last year's 8A title holder. On the other hand, they were given all they could handle by Dillard for a half before pulling away. Dillard may be a slightly underrated team, though, so I am not sure how much to read into this result.

Jones on the other hand, is stocked with athletes at the skill positions but is a little undersized on its lines. They have one quality win, a blowout victory against Bishop Moore and one quality loss to St. John's College Prep, which has cemented itself as a very good team on the national level. Jones acquitted itself reasonably well against St. John's scoring 30 points in the game. However, they were unable to contain that team's offence.  In a KOC in August, Jones had Norland on the ropes reeling off three straight scores. However, they removed their starters too early, letting Norland back into the game. The remainder of Jones's schedule has been mediocre due to a weak district and its keeping commitments to play fellow inner city schools, Oak Ridge and Evans. Thus, although they are district champs, they actually had a lesser points average than runner up Bishop Moore. This weak schedule could affect them against Gibbons.

Prediction: I think Jones pulls out a squeaker at home and wins by 2. But I would not be surprised if it went the other way. I think this is going to be a great game and if Apopka were not playing tonight, I would attend it.

Apopka at Seminole - This game is very hard to predict. Seminole's offense is guided by a freshman quarterback who plays at least two years ahead of his age. Timmy McLaine was very impressive both times I saw him this year. If he grows another three inches, fills out his frame and continues to improve, he will play on Saturdays at a high level. If Apopka is to beat Seminole, they will have to get to Timmy early and often and disrupt his rhythm. If they cannot do this McLaine may end up lighting up the field as he has a talented, if young receiver core to throw to.

It has been 9 years since these two teams played (2008). So, even though they are relatively close by, I expect Apopka's single wing offense will give some trouble. My feeling is that Apopka will be good for between 21 and 28 points. So, to win, they will have to keep Seminole below three scores. I am truly not sure if the Darters will be able to do so.

Prediction: I am unable to predict a winner in this game. It is that close in my mind. Although Seminole is the number 4 seed in the region, I feel they are at least the second best district champion in it.

Other games that should be very competitive:

    1. Dr. Phillips vs Ridge Community

    2. Wekiva vs Lake Mary

While Phillips is the favorite, I would not be at all surprised if Ridge Community pulled the upset. They gave Osceola all they could handle. Through ten weeks, I would have picked Wekiva to win against Lake Mary. However, their week 11 performance against Lake Nona, if it's a real reflection of where Wekiva is at against teams that spray the ball around, puts LM in with a solid chance, as to me they are a slightly better but similar team to Lake Nona.

The only one that really stands out in 5A is AHP. Cocoa Has put a running clock on more than one team in 5A, and before you go to the Rockledge game, after the FHSAA reviewed the film on the game that Rockledge Ref is banned from officiating for the rest of the season. I have more on him but I'll keep it off the board since some people are sensitive to the subject.

If Cocoa were to move up, it would be okay with me if they made it all the way up to 8A.

In my opinion 6A is the toughest class.

Cocoa wins an easy state title. We will never know how Cocoa would have done in 5A through 8A. I do agree that 6A is the toughest class. I am pretty sure both Jones, who is better than they were last year when the gave Cocoa a good game in the playoffs, and Cardinal Gibbons would give Cocoa great games in 5A.

DarterBlue2, I do recall and credit you for predicting Rockledge would be on the rise in the coming years.  I remember you predicting this at States in 2015.  They are surely back on the map!

Thanks. Rockledge always has a lot of athletes in its zone. As long as it keeps them home, and there is a stable, good coaching staff there, they will be a force to recon with. It looks like that time has come.

5A is rough, though, so I don't know how far they go. But I do believe they will fight to the end and have as good a chance as any except, probably, AHP.

Rockledge is a surprise for sure. When they were 1-3 things weren't looking good, but looking at the complete body of work now that all of the results are in, it's impressive.

Looking at those 3 losses, Maxpreps has Viera at #9 in Florida,  Oceola at #15 and CCC at #27 in Florida.  All 3 teams are ranked in the top 250 in America and all 3 will probably be playing in the playoffs for multiple weeks.

The question now becomes- how far can Rockledge go? It's a team I'd like to look at when the season is over and the champions are crowned.

Rockledge is going to have a difficult opponent in Round 2. The good news is they get them at home. Jones and Cardinal Gibbons are two of the best four teams in 5A going into the playoffs. I do believe that Rockledge will give either all they can handle next week.

Lord knows he would have taken Pahokee to another level if he came back.

He very well might have. But it is what it is. Just be glad he has a chance to showcase his skills at the next level. Wish him wisdom and success.
