  1. Gadsden will be without their head coach this evening - Coach Striplin had a heart attack this morning and is recovering from an emergency triple bypass.
  2. Gadsden has a pretty fair chance of getting their first win on Friday.
  3. Franklin probably had about as much desire to play PSJ as PSJ had to play Franklin. Neither team has anything to gain from playing the other.
  4. Several rural small public schools were threatening to withdraw from FHSAA if forced to continue playing against urban, often private, schools and offered the 1A Rural suggestion to FHSAA who then amended and approved it. The classification was never about the schools being unable to compete, but about the perception of fair competition. Rural areas rarely, if ever, have athletic transfers in the volume that urban schools do. Additionally, the new playoff format rewards small enrollment schools playing larger class schools, and there you go.
  5. Bay has also canceled their final game this Friday with Choctawhatchee.

  13. It's not the number of players on a roster, but the number of quality athletes on the roster that counts. Walton HS has 108 players on their roster (per Maxpreps), while Apopka lists 94. Using roster size logic, were the two teams to play it should be an even contest, but in reality, Apopka would win by as much as they wanted to and probably more.
  14. When you have schools with an enrollment of 167 (Graceville) facing, weekly, teams with enrollments of 1000 that's just dangerous to the point of being nonsensical.
  15. PSJ's coach knew they were going to have equivalent depth and athleticism to play with the teams he scheduled, Marianna, Rutherford, Arnold, and Bay are not very good, and Walton is downright bad this season. Madison County is doing quite well as a 4A playing in 1A. ;-) Rocky Bayou, Munroe, Aucilla, etc that are rural 2A that could play in 1A won't because they simply don't have the enrollment to compete in 1A. Munroe had 80 kids in HS as of the 2017 population report.

  17. The current rural 1A came about because of the real or imagined perception of advantage that urban 2A & 3A schools have. If FHSAA follows your suggestions there will be no, or just a very few, current 1A teams playing in the state series. They'll go independent and have their own conference champion, as was threatened several years ago - which happens to have brought about the current rural/urban classification system for small schools.
  18. So did MCC get roasted by a small country school in Mississippi?

  21. Rocky Bayou appears to have scheduled a game against a mythical movie-based school in Georgia, Shiloh Christian, on August 24. The movie was "Facing the Giants" (2006) based on Sherwood Christian's football team in the early 2000's, and produced, directed, and acted (in large part) by then-members of the faculty. There is no school named Shiloh Christian in Georgia. Not in GISA, not in GHSA, not in GICAA. There IS a Shiloh Hills Christian in Kennesaw, GA who participated in GICAA 8-man football last season (with nine players total on their team) who are not currently listed as participating in 8-man for the 2018 season. Link to IMDB "Facing the Giants": https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0805526/ LOL *update* According to MaxPreps RBC is playing Sherwood Christian on 24 Aug, not "Shiloh" lololol - and the Knights might well win. Sherwood is in the midst of a 27 game losing streak.
  22. Seems like among the smaller schools, that the folks in Defuniak think they're gonna be pretty strong.
