Did Jessee decide to pick a team from a new state this year?   Did he follow the Madison County RB to Lowndes?  Maybe he's on the national board with the poster formerly know as Columbiafan2017?  He still owes me money and I would hate for him to run off without paying.

while the 11 kids on the field matter most, so does the school population,
when there are 11 more kids on the sideline that are of similar ability and 11 more that are close to that ability and 11 more and 11 more, now you have 50+ varsity kids that are of similar ability.
if the school population of A isnt nearly as high B, then you have much less to choose from.
4000 kids, half boys (2000), half are athletes (1000) and 10% play football, 100.  2 teams (JV, V),
    50 kids in each.
    2000 kids, half boys (1000), half are athletes (500) and 10% play football, 50. 2 teams (JV,V),
    25 kids in each.
    school population DOES matter.
Well recruit your halls better is going to be someones answer.....
Football is hard, the commitment is even harder, its hot, its 10,11 month commitment, its all summer, its playing a 2nd sport to get better, etc.
Every kid isnt a football player, go to any high school gym and watch a basketball game.  or boys volleyball game.  almost all of those kids could help school B out, 1000%.  but, If I can run up and down the court in AC, not lift nearly as much weight(messes up my jumper-says every high school BBall kid) and just take 22ft shots for a couple hours, why would he go out and do bag drills and cone drills and catch passes and put on equipment and hurt and sweat, etc.
putting small schools with bigger schools is a complete disadvantage to many of them.
take this district, ocoee, west orange and jones absolutely demolish everyone here.....
    District 22
    Ocoee
    West Orange (Winter Garden)
    Horizon (Winter Garden)
    Jones (Orlando)
    Foundation Academy (Winter Garden)
    Orangewood Christian (Maitland)
    Trinity Preparatory (Winter Park)

orangewood christian and trinity prep have zero business in this district.  foundation would put up a fight in some years, but they to have no business here.  horizon is still in infant stages of its opening.
west orange has 3000 kids, ocoee too.  jones is close to 2k, with a plethora of talent in their area.
im not saying fair or not fair, thats ignorance.  but whats the point of ocoee playing trinity prep?  running clock in 1st qtr?

I dont see the point of having the 7th place teams in a district playing extra weeks of football just for participation reasons.....thats exactly why the classes were introduced......
to play against similar size opponents, so 1 school doesnt have 100 on the sideline and the other has 25....

I would rather see something like this in the individual sports first (golf, weightlifting, track, tennis, wrestling) and then to other team sports and then football.

As for FHSAA $$$ concerns, the FHSAA budget was 6.6 million. I am surprised that the 3 NFL teams, the 2 NBA teams, 2 MLB teams, and 2 MLS teams don't get together and say, we got this for you as you provide our future fans and athletes. Or that state legislators don't fund it since they want to run it anyway.

Interesting hypothetical question for you guys:  Let's say the FHSAA went to an "open division" for any school that wanted to compete for the ultimate state title, with a cap (or no cap, not sure which makes more sense) on the number of schools eligible to compete for the open division title.  We can all sit here and think of schools that might choose to opt in - the traditional powerhouses.   And let's say that if you opt in, you have to stay in for a defined length of time (say, four years).  And let's say those schools could play anyone that they wanted to during the regular season, but at the end of the regular season, only the top 16 make the playoffs (based on the power ranking formula in effect at the time).  Each year, some really good football teams wouldn't even make the playoffs and some other even better teams would be sitting at home after the first or second week of the playoffs.   For these teams that don't make the playoffs or don't advance past the first round or two, do they run the risk of sliding into mediocrity (or even worse) because the underclassmen on their team decide to transfer out?  Would this affect their choice to play or not play in the open division?
With that in mind, which of these schools would choose to play in the open division and which ones would prefer to just stay in their Metro or Suburban classification, knowing that there's a pretty good chance they'll at least make it to the finals and probably win their 'minor league' state title:  STA, Cocoa, Osceola, Miami Central, BTW, Northwestern, Madonna Chaminade, Columbus, Jesuit, Armwood, Apopka, Lakeland and Venice.
This question is not asking you which of those teams you'd like to see in the open division.  Instead, the question requires you look into the minds and souls of each school's administration/athletic department/coaching staff and determine whether they would risk playing in the open division for a shot at the top prize or stay home in the comfort of their own classification for the chance to win a state championship in their "lower division."

Merge 1-4M into 3 metro classes

That would be fine with me but the metro counties need to be split from the rural counties

I respectfully disagree @nolebull813. The biggest thing is here is open enrollment which was NOT an issue 15-20 years ago. That is a massive issue in larger areas teams can get really good and keep adding talent and then when you get that matchup between two similar sized schools in a state championship with one from South Florida and one from where ever in North or Central Florida, there is a mismatch.
Please tell me how a team like Suwannee who has 1,112 students and Miami Central who has 1,396 students are on the same leveled playing? They are not. No way they are not. You cannot even compare a rural-type school in Suwannee to a Miami Central in the middle of Miami. There is no comparison. It is night and day between the two.

First off let's be clear I am not a fan of Lakeland, but Skyway promoting them as world beaters isn't the same as how this thread portrays them.....LAKELAND Calls out Dade.  Also, all the transfers they have gotten hasn't convince me that we can't compete with them.  However to address your question of when they can compete with SFL schools, they beat STA in the championship game in 2018, 33-20.  As for dissing of other "North and Central FL" schools.... the following 2 years STA beat Edgewater those were competitive games.   DP  beat Atlantic in state championship in 2017, Mandarin beat Columbus in 2018, Columbus beat Apopka by 1 (21-20) in 2019,  Seminole was state champ in 2020 and Venice in 2021.  The year (2019) Columbus was state champ we lost to them 21-17 with an opportunity to win at the end and in 2020 we beat Palmetto in Miami to advance to the championship game against Seminole.   I do agree that SFL is more loaded and has more quality teams, which is dictated by population, so I am not dissing them as they do have great teams.  Lastly, I don't recall Dillard venturing out north against those few quality teams you seem to mock.

Northwestern is reciprocating the trip from last year, so no harm or hard feelings are present on either side of those coaching staffs. I am not sure which parts of the schedule are home and home series, but you are correct that district games will flip every year unless Venice is relocated into a larger district next year. (And rightfully as they should, 3 team districts help nobody.)
Road games are a lot of fun, and the kids don’t get to have the experience of playing in someone else’s stadium. It’s going to sting because the seniors aren’t getting the fun of bus rides to away games or the experience needed of traveling. If they make it to the 4A suburban state championship, I think it’s going to feel uncomfortable because they will have to travel 3 hours to Fort Lauderdale to play in front of a hostile crowd. It could definitely poorly affect the way they play.
My final thoughts are these: having 9 home games reflects poorly on your program because it makes you seem unwilling to travel and in need of Home Field Advantage. That shouldn’t be the case, but unfortunately it seems that way this year. Maybe Venice could afford to travel out of state in 2023 or at least have 4 or 5 away games with all of the money they will make from home ticket sales this season.  But I don’t like having all of those home games that reflect poorly on your program. They’re unnecessary.

All kidding aside, a couple of thoughts popped into my mind about the Venice schedule:
    1.  Based on the way the playoffs are currently done, Venice could literally play all of its games, regular and playoffs, at home, with the exception of one regular season game and then the state championship game.  And if they are deemed the "home" team in the championship game, they will have worn their road white jerseys a grand total of one time the entire season.
    2.  Unless folks just get tired of going to a Venice home game every week of the season (except one), the Venice athletic coffers should look pretty darn good come December.
    3.  From a player's standpoint, playing all your games at home may not necessarily be a good thing.   There's something to say about road trips, bus rides, and showing up at somebody's else's stadium and quieting an amped-up crowd with a couple of early scores on your way to a big win on their field (followed by the bus ride back to school).  Venice kids won't get that experience.
    4.  Venice is in a three-team district.  Unless and until that changes, they'll have exactly one district game at home and one district game on the road every year.  The location of all other games played is up to the Venice coach.
    5.  How many of the remaining eight games that Venice is playing this year are part of a 'home and home' series? I will absolutely guaranty you that Venice isn't playing nine road games next year.   Will Venice have to breach the 'home and home' deals?  Or is Venice raking in enough at its home games that it can afford to share some of its gate proceeds with visiting teams as a means of luring them in?
    6.  Road games provide challenges for all all associated with a team (players, coaches, managers, film/camera guys, trainers, band, parents, etc.).  It's hard to work out the kinks when you only have to travel once.   Overcoming obstacles builds character and gives a team confidence that it can win any game any where.   I could actually see the lack of road games coming back to haunt Venice if they make it to the championship game.
OK, that's all I've got.  I'll just have to remember that we've have this conversation in a "Dillard thread" next season when schedules come out again.

I’m not familiar with that area as far as high schools go, but I’d assume the big changes would be the sheer number of schools in Florida. How many high schools were there in the 90’s compared to the number playing in the FHSAA today (not to mention independent schools). Most schools are much closer.

Obviously 2 and three team districts aren’t ideal, but limiting classes doesn’t help. The best solution right now is to abolish districts altogether and make everything based on a regional record. Top 8 teams make the playoffs. No “1-9 district champs”, and teams can schedule who they want. Make a requirement of like 6 region games and then let teams play new opponents each year.

I was definitely being sarcastic.   A dominant softball pitcher may be the biggest difference maker (and talent equalizer) in all of high school sports.   Kind of like having an athletic 7-footer on your basketball team.   A really good pitcher can keep any team in any game against virtually any opponent.  Hey, if you can't get runners on the bases, you can't score runs and if you can't score runs, you can't win games.  There just aren't that many Jennie Finches and Cat Ostermans out there.
