I'm not sure what that has to do with why Roland should or shouldn't take the job.  Plenty of community support in Kingsland,  and if I had to guess, a better paying job than Mainland. I've seen plenty of Mainland games over the years, including Maronto's final game after the prostitution sting and they never had the kind of turnout that I saw in Kingsland that night.

See your ID says Ft Pierce. Ever see Randy "Sweetback" Walker play ?  That Ft Pierce Central alum was the best running back I ever saw live... Quick and smooth as he glided through the defense (Sweet).

Camden beat a State Champ Miami Central if memory serves correct.

Correct !  I see "Trollbull" is still at it, talking trash. Drove up for that barn burner about 50 miles north of Jacksonville in the sticks. Rockets couldn't stop the run and they couldn't stop the pass. Camden 45-42. I also believe they came down to STA that season or the next.

That's the Ludacris part......no local teams and drive to the Daytona area to play all your games....who wants to do that on a Friday afternoon.

Hey, you got a problem with honky-tonk bars, Dollar Stores, and a 100 pump gas station featuring a "Wall of Beef Jerky ?" ( at $33 a lb. )  Geez, you just can't please folks these days.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge one of the most important figures in Lakeland football history who's never gotten any credit from anyone under 40, or who started paying attention to Lakeland football post 2003.

Bill Galloway. He was the OL coach who developed the "Beefaloes" tradition, which is what made Lakeland into the power-running team that goes a long way to explain their sustained success. Galloway left, I believe, after the 2003 season to move to Tennessee. He was with Castle for roughly 20 years. And, when he was there, I can tell you he was almost Coach 1B to Castle's 1A. Castle's offenses in the early years were known for being balanced- they produced a QB who held the NCAA completion percentage for a time (Wayne Peace at Florida).  Galloway's influence probably helps explain the shift to run-dominant offenses in the 1990s. Lakeland won three state titles with Galloway being a crucial part of the staff, and I think his mark carried over to the teams that proceeded his exit. There were some other long-time coaches who deserve credit as well. But, Galloway was a towering figure who functioned almost like a co-head coach with Castle. Lakeland ran for over 1100 yards in two (2) playoff games, mostly from under center, and without a hurry-up approach. The Lakeland tradition of power football, which inspires players today, owes a lot to Galloway.

Thanks for the insight. I knew Deland Coach Rick Darlington played for Bill Castle at Lakeland in the 1970's. If coach Galloway was also there at that time it just makes sense he learned blocking fundamentals and techniques from another master, coach Galloway. Now Coach Darlington master's the single wing offense on his own, but it's all built on the rock solid foundation of two other legendary coaches. It's no wonder how these three masters have been so successful.

Maybe. But, that was still prior to the super-team era. Bolles has 6-8 major prospects IIRC, which at the time made them almost invincible. Now, it just means they're a contender. The last 15-20 years, Dade teams have been nearly unstoppable by non-Dade teams.

Bolles also lost their starting QB, with a fractured ankle, in their first or second possession of the game inside Bartow's 10 yard line on a beautiful cold clear blue sky in Daytona Beach. (Homer Plug) Bolles offense was a shell of itself.

  7. I liked the straight ahead, north, south style of the Lakeland running backs. No dancing, no run to the sideline, just cut it up, and drive forward before being knock down. Great instincts, great teaching. A camera kept an eye on retired Lakeland Hall of Fame Head Coach Bill Castle. He loved a good ground game. Wouldn't be surprised if the current staff picked up a few rushing pointers from the old master.

  8. The Bucs kicked a field goal as time expired to win their second state championship in a 100+ year history. Early on after running back the opening kickoff for a touchdown and then blocking a Mainland field goal attempt with then a long scoop and score touchdown, St Augustine appeared ready to blow Mainland off the field 13-0 just like Hollywood Chaminade did to CCC in the day's opening game of the Florida football championships. Only difference was Mainland's defense wasn't having any of that and held the Yellow Jackets too under 50 yards total offense and no more points in the entire first half. Their season scoring average was over 43 points per game.  The Bucs then scored 18 straight points in the second half to finally take the lead 18-13. Mainland's offensive star of the game was QB DJ Murray who passed for more than 200 yards and run for 175 yards. He has lead the way throughout the playoffs and most of the regular season. I sure am proud to be a Buccaneer this morning. Hopefully it doesn't take another 20 years to get that 3rd championship. No way I make it.  :)

Speaking of 20 years ago..... Almost to the day Mainland won it's first championship 20 years ago in 2003. In the early game (of two) that year Chaminade-Madonna won it's first championship over Madison County. Yesterday Chaminade wins the early game, Mainland the middle game and Madison loses the nightcap.  How's that for a 20year repeat.

  9. Just to piggy back on Darter's advice, History is a fabulous subject matter to study and there are so many areas world wide you can focus your interests. But you are talking Florida teacher salary here unless your end goal is a very expensive, difficult, and time consuming  PHD. Salary isn't everything and having a job and career you love and enjoy can be special. Just be careful with the choices you make. Best to you young man. You've got the whole world in front of you. Peace.

For all you clowns who said metro suburb plan would create parity, looks like same group of suburb teams who were awesome before and made semi finals regularly are the only ones who benefitted from the plan. But, you crushed many metro schools with a  huge enrollment number which led to more blowouts in district play. Nice.

Put all cheaters in same couple of divisions with promotion and demotion is only real solution to  the recruiting problem.

Here are the state match ups. Mandarin (Jacksonville) vs. Columbus (Miami) - Gee never saw Columbus in finals huh and mandarin won a couple of years ago.

Homestead vs. St. Thomas Aquinas - Rematch of last years state game

Class 2MBerkeley Prep (Tampa) vs. Miami Norland- Norland new but had many transfers to get  good.

1MClearwater Central Catholic vs.Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) Florida- Chaminade should be in 4m..

Class 1RMadison County (Madison) vs. HawthorneDec.  Madison should be in 3 M

4SLakeland vs. VeniceDec - surprise...never saw these two in state game before.  Lakeland State House Rep started this whole crap.

.  3SMainland (Daytona Beach) vs. St. Augustine-  these teams were state semi-finalsts regularly before break up and both won state before.

Class 2SBradford (Starke) vs. Cocoa - Cocoa is such a lock to win state here that even Fanduel would not post odds on it.

1STrinity Catholic (Ocala) vs. Cardinal Mooney (Sarasota) - Never saw Trinity before.

Playing for  "State"  championships are nice, but something rings hollow to me when the large urban area's of the stateMiami, Ft Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville are all legislated out of the way and they still call it a state championship. Calling it a Junior Championship would be more appropriate. But that's just my opinion, nothing more.

Dan, unfortunately I won't be able to make the final as it's at 3pm on Thursday and my appointment is at 4pm that day. So, I can't even watch the majority of it via stream.

I am not sure why they scheduled this game for that time as I think it would be one of the better attended ones if it were at night and especially if it were Friday or Saturday.

But then again, nothing the FHSAA usually does makes a whole lot of sense to me. We could also have certainly used a one week break as the schools set for Thursday have no more than a six day break, and in the case of the earliest, about a 5.5 day break.

True, I saw some walking wounded tonight. Hopefully there's time to recover for all six teams that play on Thursday December 7th ( a National Holiday ).

  12. Well, that one was a little nerve-wracking. The yellow flags were flying and not a "Jambun" in sight . Make no mistake, the better team won tonight, regardless of all that litter thrown about the playing field. Mainland's defense manhandled Vanguard. They looked DANGEROUS !  And when the Mainland offense was sputtering they still came up with just enough big running plays to let the Ocala team know this wasn't going to be the evening they dreamt about. The Buccaneer's must clean up their propensity for silly and foolish penalties that only let opponents dangerously hang around longer then they should. Let's not give St Augustine any helping hand next week. It's been exactly twenty years (2003) since our first and only state football championship. They can't beat a mistake free Mainland. We're way too strong. Buc Forever.

We were supposed to play yall in 2018, but don't know we still haven't played yall yet.

Vero, can't say I remember the issue why that game never happened, but we have been down near you a couple times in the regular season to play a good Sebastian River High, and a very good Fort Pierce Central. Mainland always likes to play strong out of area teams during the regular season to challenge itself and prepare for the playoffs. Some strong regular season opponents : Miami Central, American Heritage-Plantation, Cocoa, Jacksonville Bolles, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, St Edwards-Ohio, Gwinnett County-Ga., Olive Branch-Mississippi, Madison County, Rockledge, Dr Phillips, Orlando Edgewater, Sanford, Melbourne-Palm Bay, Bartram Trail, Kissimmee-Osceola, etc.

Really?  What would make you say that?

Don't know either, never met the gentlemen. But from newspaper articles, football message board gossip, adult conversations, and the like they seem similar in how they go about winning football games. My opinion was formulated from the above input. I know nothing, it's all  "OPINION."

  15. First off my credentials as a Mainland Buccaneer Homer. First game I ever saw, Gainesville Purple Hurricanes (QB Eddie McAshan, Ga. Tech) beat Daytona Mainland (RB Touchdown Tommie Durrance, U of FL.) 32-27 (?) in 1967. I started as a runningback/cornerback on a fully integrated Mainland team from 1970-72. Between  2000-2018 I missed only two games (Deltona, Bartram Trail) total home or away.  I bleed Blue and Gold...... The 2023 Buccaneers might be the most "physical team" they have ever had. I witnessed all our Miami Central losses from 2010 onward and this year's Buc team compares "physically" with those great Rocket teams. It also compares favorably with them in getting dumb and unnecessary penalties one after another. We let teams hang around much longer then they should. It hasn't bit us yet this year, but it could. Defense and special teams are first rate. No noticeable weakness anywhere (Good offensive coordinators may say otherwise). My only question mark is the offense. It has been inconsistent at best against the better teams. The O-Line is huge, maybe along with our biggest ever. Running backs are solid, receiving core is improving, and the QB may be the fastest player on the team. So where's the problem ?  I'm a loud mouth know it all and don't have an answer. Something tells me after the "MAINLAND" win Friday night it won't matter what I think.... Buc Forever

Edit : My last sentence was changed. It was a little confusing, sorry  :)

  16. Deland's QB TJ Moore is a very gifted, bruising athlete who can hurt you with his arm (over 1,000 yds) or legs. But the Bulldog's aren't a one trick pony. In particular, one Javon Ross who does everything for this team all over the field. I believe he has more then 20 TD's (?) running, receiving, kick returns, and an interception return or two. This young man is electric !  Sadly if he was D-1 larger he'd be on every rating service "can't miss" list....Go Bulldogs
