shredstar got a reaction from Ray Icaza in Lakeland is the reason we have super teams in Florida
I wouldn't be shocked to see fierce opposition to an "open" division from most or all of the above mentioned schools.  They seem to want no part of competing against each other for just ONE title.  It's far more lucrative to them to stockpile their own titles in their own divisions.  But if they do have to compete against each other then the competition for talent will be at an all new level with big $$$ involved.
As for the Bolles thing, they were ok and nothing more.  Once they hired Corky from Lee in 1989, easily the most recognizable coach up here at the time, everyone knew what was about to happen.  For years he scooped up all the talent from around town.  That, combined with facilities that many FCS universities would envy, they did what they did.  After he retired they have pretty much returned to what they were pre-Corky.  Most of their recent runs have come due to the lack of competition up here more than anything else.  They no longer have the talent base to compete with the elite teams and would likely never qualify for any type of open division.

Kudos to the Columbus kids.  We were there and it took us about three minutes after the start of the game to see that they had been all over that Bartram v. Mandarin film.  That was the blueprint.
Mandarin has to replace their two backs and two corners and that is pretty much it.  Everyone else returns.  They will definitely be in the mix next year.  The two corners are most critical because, as everyone knows, Noah Grubbs will be around for a while too.

It can be done.  My son works at a restaurant here locally that uses DirecTV and they get all the regional sports networks.  Not sure if any of the other providers offers a package like that though.

Ok, time to clear up some Mandarin debate.
In 2018 they lost a total of four games to Godby, Raines, Lee (Riverside) and Fletcher.  Carson Beck was injured early in the Godby game and missed most of it.  He also missed the following game vs. Lee.  The Raines game he played and they lost on the last play of the game and they lost out here at Fletcher the end of the year because their seeding was locked in and a bunch of starters were sat for the game.

As far as 2018 vs. the current team, there is quite a bit more talent there now than there was in 2018, especially on defense.  Their current QB is good, but not at the level CB was at this point.  The major difference between the two is that the 2018 team was senior dominated while this current team will return next year pretty much intact and will likely be even better.  That 2018 team kind of crept up out of nowhere where while this current team has been a major talking point up here since the summer because everyone knew they were stacked.  Is Mandarin better than the seed they were given?  Yep.  They were penalized because their schedule had two games with "forced" opponents (one district and one through the Gateway rotation).  The combined record of those two was 0-20.  So, while everyone is aghast and coming up with excuses why Mandarin rolled through Seminole and Orange counties the last few weeks, up here it was just kind of expected they would do exactly what they did.  No one really batted an eye.

As far as regular season wins and losses go, who cares as long as you make the tournament.  It's a long season and we are talking about kids, so lots of stupidity happens along the way.  Applying the distributive property to this never works.  It's all about individual match ups.  At this level, just one player can take an otherwise 5-5 roster and turn it into 10 plus wins. Every team matches up with another differently.  That is the one thing that will never change no matter how hard people try to compare a>b and b>c so a>c.  It just never works out that way.

Always read, seldom post, but I can offer some insight here.  My son and I drove down to first game and I watched the second game on feed.  The score of the first game was very misleading.  Simply put, Mandarin lost the first game because they had 5 turnovers, with one of them being a punt snapped into the end zone for a free LM score.  Even with all the turnovers, Mandarin was going in to score in the 4th qtr to bring the game within 2 or 3 points when they dropped a wide open TD on 4th down.  LM then took the next drive in for a score to get the final margin.  By no means did LM go up and down the field on them all game like they have on everyone else.  They did hit some longer runs, but only managed about 250 yards total.  The second game was very similar, but this time with fewer turnovers, I believe it ended up being a zero margin.  The consensus up here all last week was that if as long as Mandarin didn't turn the ball over a bunch they should handle them comfortably, which they obviously did.  You can see the talent there with Noah Grubbs.  Some similarities to Carson Beck, who we had up here a few years ago.  The first game against Mandarin he was a 6 of 18 for 108 yds.  Haven't seen any stats for this past game but they will likely be very similar.  It is not a coincidence that by far his worst two games this year were both against Mandarin.  There was not a lot he could do because his receivers were just not able to get open.  The Mandarin secondary is one of the best in the entire state, regardless of classification.  They will all be playing meaningful football on Saturdays in the future.
Mandarin is kind of an outlier in this region being up here in Jax but connected to a region with a lot of Metro Orlando schools.  They won a terrible district and had three losses, all because of the same thing....turnovers.  They do have some trouble with power running teams (i.e. Bartram and Bolles), but have shown improvement in that area throughout the year.  I really don't see any power running team like those aforementioned two in their path going forward.  The only receiver that has given them any trouble all year was Naeem Burroughs of Bolles and he is going to light up everyone he faces.   They have all kinds of talent on offense, the kind of players that if you do not come up with a plan to stop them individually they will torch you.  They have a talented QB who is a three year starter and two excellent backs who benefit from teams scared to death they are going to get beat deep by Jamie Ffrench, in which he usually does anyway.  Really, their only issue on offense has been turnovers in certain games.  If they limit those going forward they could very easily win out.  Top to bottom, they have more sheer talent than anyone left in their path.  In fact, this current team has more talent than their 2018 state title team.  Looking ahead, much of their talent will return so they are likely going to be as talented or even more so next year.
As for LM not having their back, yeah, I could see where that could make some difference, but even if he were playing, Mandarin was just the better team overall.  Having the threat of a decent back allows compensation for having average receivers, which ultimately was what ended up being the real problem for LM this year.  The kid can make all the throws, he just needs some quality receivers to throw to.

Got to see the Broward Academy of Football up here earlier this year.  They didn't seem to have one guy that had to be stopped, but man, they have bodies at all positions and their depth is what makes them hard for most teams to deal with.  There seems to be some opportunity through the air against them....but you have to get their offense off the field first, which is a whole different issue.

Lee's field is a complete dumpster fire.  It was a dumpster fire in the 80's when we would have to play there.  Hasn't changed.  Maybe a coat of paint on things may help.  If you have never seen "rust" colored goal posts....well, Lee has them.  And it isn't paint either.  Their scoreboard lights blink like a Christmas tree and the score and time change randomly.  It is in desperate need of renovations to say the least.

Yeah, between that and the network subscription I get to see my share of games.

At least PV has a quality venue.  Just think, you could be headed to the backyard right now, which will be a total mess tonight.

I would love to go because it is going to be a good game.  Stuck at work and don't think I will get out in time.  I have been to a few at PVHS over the years.
