Last I heard, Gibbons and STA were following and doing whatever the publics do in Broward.  So, STA would be out. They follow the Archdiocese of Miami as well and they weren't planning on opting in yet.  Heritage I believe will do there own thing.  I could be wrong though as I am getting that as 2nd hand info.

Then they should say states that can't start are allowed to have games after the state series end and do their own Jan. or whenever is best season.  Then teams can stay part of the FHSAA, but do a regional championship for one season.  As it is now. counties are looking to leave the FHSAA all together for the season and they may not get some back. Also, you can call it a state championship in Dec., but is it really legit if only 40-50% of teams are in it and none of the south that just swept last season. It just seems to me that forcing teams to make a deadline or not have a season is a bad call during a pandemic.

Also, The Flu only kills about 35,000 people a year in the US. 2 years ago we had the highest total in 40 years and hit the 70,000 people keep using.  That is double the norm.
Broward superintendent came out right away after mandate and said starting 5 days a week isn't likely in Broward.
As for football, Broward just pushed back summer workouts again to the 20th.  That is likely to be moved as well.  If the FHSAA really pushes forward with the start of the season on time or even back 2 weeks don't be surprised if South Florida (outside of maybe large private schools) pulls out of FHSAA and does their own thing this year. It has been discussed.

On top of that, I would add that not all HS football players are healthy or without underlying conditions.  Some players do have asthma, diabetes, obesity, undiagnosed heart issues that slip by etc. You are playing roulette with the odds.  While most kids won't die or will be asymptomatic I would hate to be the guy who gave the go ahead and 1 kid dies or the coach of that team.

Yea, I was more talking about them being an example of falling apart last couple years because of transfers leaving. Not how they were built.

I would say your coaches and AD dropped the ball if you showed up not knowing that.  Coaches talk and decide this stuff weeks before the actual games and they should now to ask because it is standard especially if it was a spring game.

At the end of the day, it is HS basketball. Most people aren't traveling hours to watch that regardless of where you put it.  Not regular people that live by and went to the school who have jobs or kids of their own or teachers.  You have about 15 kids on each team. So if each kid gets a parent or two and siblings then add on some extra family members, the extreme fan (most schools don't have this), some teachers (Not even the majority would travel) and admin. That is what you are drawing.  That is only going to be a couple hundred no matter where you put it. So, who cares if the arena looks funny. At least it is neutral and both teams are traveling similar distances. It isn't like it is getting watched nationally and people are staring at the crown.  You are looking at the court if streaming a game or whatever.

I was speaking more to the fact that not all, but many people from Florida tend to act like the top talent in many states isn't equal or close to Florida when they are. Have top Florida talent is great, but not necessary. They just don't have the number of athletes that we do or depth.  Proportionately, you are 100% correct. I am saying more just down right overall numbers though.

There is a difference between Florida possibly being the deepest state when it comes to athletic depth and having the best coaching and top end players position by position. Other states have players with stars, but don't have all the athletes that Florida High Schools have without stars who might not turn into a great college player, but is still a hell of an athlete.

It was only seniors at the BCAA all star game. He is wrong. If they weren’t seniors and played it is not only against the rules, but messes with the kids eligibility.

For every school, it is not as simple as putting money in or giving up.  Some schools whether because of academic standards, demographics, location will never turn it around by standards of some people on here. It is about the kids having fun and competing for them.  I have been at schools that were public whole time and been to playoffs. I have also been at a school who was blown out by 50 every week no matter who the coach was.  They went independent. Guess what? The kids playing and student body were happy going 5-5 to 8-2 every year. Numbers of players on roster went from 20 players to 40s and a large JV squad. They did not care who the name of the other team was or that they couldn't win a state title. They were competing against equal schools. Losing by 50 won'r ruin a kid. Losing by 50 every game every year is embarrassing for them. The switched back to FHSAA and above 4A, so have districts and now are back to losing by 50 and had to cancel the Jv season. Varsity back in the 20s.   Both sides did compromise for 1A-4A and it is better.  The smaller schools who have a harder time turning it around came back to the FHSAA. The FHSAA agreed to get rid of districts, so they could schedule their own opponents. That was the compromise. Not perfect, but better.  As far as the point system, nothing will be perfect. It is impossible. This is getting it right for the most part though. A good team might get left out here or there.  Happens at every level in every sport.

Some of you are looking at from outside or fan of overall product of FHSAA as a whole. Try looking form individual schools point of view. Some don't have the money to compete or travel.  Also, some know they aren't state championship material or sending kids other D3 here or there to college.  However, they still have kids that love football and just want to be apart of a team and compete against similar schools.  Looking at it from the outside would take that away from them.  These kids have 4 years left until they are adults and will never play a sport again in most cases. Getting blown out every week and money is why many went independent. It is also why the FHSAA set it up this way now, so these schools can come back to Fhsaa and still have their "conferences."

Classes are a problem for some teams, which is why independent works.  For example, one school that is struggling, but not named is a 5A school after going back to districts. Their problem is that they are a 100% magnet HS.  8th graders must have a 2.5 GPA and 3/3 on standardized test to even apply. Then they have a straight lottery draw with 250 kids being taken out of 800 applying.  No concessions. Even if an athlete has the grades still have to go to lottery.  Once in the school, they need to maintain a 2.5 GPA taking all AP or Honors classes. If they fall below they get kicked out of school. This really hits 9th and 10th graders or aren't used to these standards and up to 1/3 of JV team is removed each year. Also, they are a zero zone school, so nobody gets an automatic bid. Students live as far as 45 minutes away and need to catch the bus at 4:00 am and then stay through for practices or games. You can't build. Some schools need exceptions made or will always struggle.

Let's just say unless a private school wants you it isn't as easy as just transferring for every kid.  Odds are a 5-6 team like South Broward doesn't have 20 kids a STA or Gibbons wants.  I'm sure they could get more money from a Westminster or Pine Crest, but what is the point of going to one of them.  If a private school wants you you will know.  I have had parents of big private schools we don't even play at our games with financial aid packets and applications already printed out to give to certain players after the game.  Have also had head coaches of private schools we don't play have the guts to come right up to certain players after our games and give them their emails and talk back and forth.  Right  before the talks get too specific into money they say come in to school for a visit, so no record of it. 90% of the time if a kid transfers to a big private school they have been talked to.  Always exceptions to the rule though.

I guarantee those kids that transferred to private schools knowing they weren't going to be starters had someone in their ear telling them they would be eventually or come from families willing to pay that tuition. Private schools are expensive and they don't let them all in for free.  They give them some financial aid, but that has to be paid back. I have heard horror stories about kids getting screwed when it was time to get records released for colleges because of that financial aid. It isn't just as easy as transferring to a private school unless that school really wants you.

Most teams pull their starters by the 4th of KOC. Many do it at halftime.  Several will play JV kids the 4th.  Really depends on size of program, but most with 40+ kids do that.

The Dolphins 7s is not a qualifier for anything. It's just something the Dolphins do for community outreach type deal and give back to high schools. It is free for all teams. The players the Friday before get life skill lesson at a symposium at Hard Rock Stadium. They also each get 2 different Dolphins jerseys/dry fits  for free. They get good work against teams in all 3 counties down here and it keeps the teams together instead of floating to all star 7s teams and getting recruited and such. Not everybody has money to pay for travel and pay 200-500 a team to play in tournament just for someone else to line their pockets. The Dolphins 7s is a good event. Has 35-50 teams their every year.
