Very physical game.  If they played 10 times, I would go with Central winning 6.  Central's D line got penetration throughout the night, and I think that was the difference.  Incredible performance in the trenches by Central.  Richardson is good, but not good enough to thread the needle consistently under pressure..at least not last night.  That said, I don't think Carol City would be the team they are this year without him.  He is a good general out there and his experience shows.
I loved that each just pounded the ball and did not get fancy.  It allowed for a very close game and allowed us to see who wins a slugfest between the two.

I watched some of the first half and thought Apopka's D did a good job.  Saw some aggressive play.

Could you imagine if Citadel won this game...at Alabama?  Alabama was a 53-point favorite.  Anyone who took Citadel and the points is smilin about now.  Citadel already has 149 yards of rushing.

Although the score does not reflect it, Apopka contained Wekiva's offense for the entire first half last evening before wearing down in the mid third quarter. Wekiva's sole touchdown in the first half was off a nearly busted fake punt when the punter managed to pitch the ball just as he was being brought down.
The problem Apopka faced was that they could not move the ball either on the ground or through the air consistently against Wekiva's D. As a result, Apopka's defense got little time to rest and was often in bad field position. For the entire game, Apopka managed to break off one big play, and, aside from that, had one sustained drive that looked promising, as well as one razzle dazzle type play, and a pass that found Wright wide open for a touchdown. If a team can find a chink in the defense's armor, and can exploit it, they have a sold chance of winning as Wekiva probably won't put up basketball scores on very good defenses. The game against Mandarin the Friday after Thanksgiving should tell us a lot as Mandarin seems to be much improved in the playoffs over their regular season performances.

Nice post.  South Dade is a scary team.  If their "good" team shows up, they could challenge Columbus.  And Deerfield is a dangerous team, too.  Have not seen PB Central.
Those 2 chinks in Wekiva's armor could be huge in the upcoming games.  Columbus is not a flashy team.  They are very disciplined and execute.  They have had some slow starts this year, but the team I saw this weekend came out firing on both sides of the ball.  South Dade, Columbus and Deerfield can all score points very quickly.  Could work for or against them playing a team like Wekiva.  Those 3 also have very solid defenses, and Wekiva is not going to run over them as easily as they have done to some teams this year.

Armwood goes to Vanguard. Vanguard is the 1 seed in the north. Armwood will have to travel to Vanguard this week and would have to go to Navarre if that ended up being the semi. Crestview can not have a home game no matter what happens.

    Accountability Time!

I'm hard on myself when I pick wrong games, but I'm not above bragging when I do well! I'm happy to say I went 8 for 8 last week, hurray! Let's look at it:

Chaminade vs Palmer Trinity: I had Chaminade by 50+ and they won by 62. This was completely expected. Palmer Trinity would struggle against the vast majority of 3A teams, so playing the best team in 3A was always going to be too much to ask. Trinity did finish with a double digit win season though, so there's that.

Benjamin vs American Heritage:  I picked the Stallions by 14, but they won by 4. Many feel that AHD winning was an upset, but I never believed that. It would have been an upset had Benjamin won. Heritage has taken some lumps the past few years so the fact they're back in a regional final is good for the programs future.

Berkeley defeated Calvary Christian: I had Berkeley by 7, they won by 8. It sounds like Calvary started off hot but once the Bucs slowed the pace down and started their ball control offense the Warriors simply couldn't keep up. Calvary had a very good season and bring back quite a bit next year. Berkeley Prep is a mainstay in 3A though, they've had some good post season runs over the past 10 years.

Taylor County defeated St. Joseph Academy: I had Taylor County by 28 they won by 26. Taylor County won big in this one and that shouldn't surprise anybody. St. Joseph Academy, similar to Palmer Trinity would get defeated by the bulk of 3A teams. Taylor County has done a great job turning their season around. Much better than the record indicated.

Florida High defeated Pensacola Catholic: I had FSU High by 3, they won by 4.  This was my personal 3A game of the week and it lived up to the hype. Catholic traded blows for the Seminoles but wore down late due to fatigue.  With what Catholic has coming back next year the focus should be on accumulating points to get home games. Catholic will be a threat in years to come.

King's Academy defeated Holy Trinity:  I had King's by 18, they won by 9. Good win for King's Academy. I figured Nate Hooks would get his Tigers to hang with King's and they did, but King's simply had more depth which allowed them to hold on.

First Academy defeated Father Lopez:   I had First Academy by 8 they won by 20. What started as a competitive game turned into a 3 TD win for 1st Academy. Once that Wing-T wore down the Green Wave defense it was going to have to turn into a shootout. Father Lopez had a good season though. The playoff win over MCC represents a step forward for the team.

CCC defeated TC:  I picked CCC to win 42-21, the final ended up being 30-3.  I communicated with some Tampa Catholic individuals who admitted this morning they purposely kicked a field goal with the game out of control to avoid being shutout. CCC racked up around 400 yards offense and held TC to under 90.

The Knights dominated on defense and earned a 19-0 shutout win over the Highlanders on Friday night in the Class 6A, Region II playoffs.
Vanguard pressured Lake Wales on 17-of-29 dropbacks in the passing game, with 13 of those coming on 16 passing attempts in the first half.
Bryce Langston (four quarterback hurries, four knockdowns) and Andre Jones (two sacks, forced fumble, tackles for loss), Malik Pertee, Jordan Monroe and Tyler Kirkland-Lecorn (sack, tackle for loss) weren’t blocked all night by the Highlander offensive line.
Lake Wales ended with 65 yards rushing on 23 carries and finished with 160 yards of total offense.
Trevonte Rucker continued his stellar postseason play with 113 yards rushing on 13 carries, as well as a solid passing night (7-of-11, 132 yards, two touchdowns).
Both of Rucker’s scoring passes went to Leonard Manuel (four catches, 86 yards, two touchdowns).
In the win over the Highlanders, Vanguard finished with 375 yards, keyed by 243 yards rushing on 44 carries.
And to think Rucker is only a Sophomore. He's going to be around for another two seasons.
Manuel is the player I was talking about previously. He's a complete WR and it doean't hurt that he's 6' 5" and 220.
Old school lion had reservations about Vanguard's defense, in an earlier post. I agreed that in two or three regular season games the defense looked anything but stellar. However, in the two playoff games so far this defense is certainly lights out.
Next Friday the Knights host tough and skilled Armwood at Booster Stadium. I'm thinking, though, that this may be the time that Armwood meets its match.

Pointed this out in another thread.  Teams in larger, "weak" districts are at a distinct disadvantage because they are forced to play a certain number of "weak" teams, which then necessitates them scheduling a potentially challenging non-district schedule.  Add on top of that certain county scheduling restrictions, and there is an inherent handicap.  In that sense, it is not truly a level playing field for some when it comes to making the playoffs.

It's sad how some of the talented FL kids go OOS and thrive.  Last night I was flipping channels between games and happened to catch Shaun Shivers(from Chaminade last year) break off a 30-yard run against Georgia.  The coaching staff at Auburn has publicly praised his work ethic and toughness, and he is contributing there as a true freshman.  So is Anthony Schwarz of AH Plantation.  Shivers was recognized as a leader at his high school and that is what FSU and Miami are lacking, IMO.  No doubt they are getting kids with lots of talent, but some of their kids lack poise, especially as underclassmen.  In other words, it's the "type" of kid they are recruiting that I sometimes question.  Look at the track records of some of these kids at FSU and Miami in terms of off-the-field problems.

The Manatee/Riverview game will be streamed tonight, lot of emailing and phone calls yesterday, but was able to work it out with Manatee's Athletic Director this morning to have the game streamed tonight. Thank you, to Dr Lapoint for being so approachable and willing to make it happen and the FHSAA for waiving the late fee!
