    John Peery,

Former editor of the local weekly Apopka Chief, passed away today. John wrote all of the sports articles in the Chief, and was always on the sidelines of Apopka football games. And though he retired a year ago, he continued to write his articles and cover Apopka football from the sidelines. We last exchanged pleasantries at the Pancake Supper and Pep Rally before the Edgewater game three weeks ago. I ragged on him a bit for picking Edgewater to win by 7 points and suggested that the Darters could pull the game off. Little did either of us know the shellacking we were about to take.

Last Friday John was on the sidelines when our kicker nailed a 43 yard field goal to win as time expired in dramatic fashion. John, who was am ample man, literally leapt for joy.

Though I don't count myself as a personal friend, for the past 25 years, his weekly articles have been a  staple in my life.

I am sure all Apopka fans will agree with me that John was the epitome of what it meant to be a Blue Darter. John graduated in the class of 1973, and his daughter graduated from Apopka several years after my two boys did over a decade ago.

I don't know if John ever posted on this message board, but he used to post on the old Florida Varsity Football Central board back in the day.

In addition to Apopka football, John was an ardent fan of Tennessee football.

    He will be greatly missed.

What was his screen name on the Fla Varsity Football Central message board?

Okay man, we will agree to disagree on this one.  You spout on about my lack of facts (fair enough) but you don't throw any facts out yourself to defend them.  Simply having a great football team doesn't make the school legit either.  I find them highly suspect based upon circumstances of extremely small enrollment and sudden investment in football but on the other hand they aren't any different than IMG which most folks seem okay with.

As far as F rated schools, that is a completely different topic based upon public school funding and local neighborhood socioeconomics.  In fact, public money (via vouchers) going to these private schools is money that could be flowing into these F rated schools.  At least I agree with you here in that this needs to be addressed.  It's a tough solution and I don't really know how to fix it because it is much deeper than simply throwing money at the problem.

    Your post makes no sense.

The level of legitimacy you place on them is simply an opinion that can’t be corroborated with facts. If the way they attract kids to the school is something you find unorthodox then it just means you don’t agree with it or understand it,  but that doesn’t make it illegitimate.

You know what is illegitimate? An F rated failing public school with a high drop out rate and barely any kids going to college.

These are great points. I am not sure why grown adults are so threatened by these arrangements, especially since these teams cannot compete for FHSAA playoffs and no FHSAA team is required to play them.

Nobody is rating or critiquing the officiating or officials. And as far as those "comedians" they are actually officials themselves and some fans. As far as the "jokes", it's the officiating from the Cocoa-STA game with the officiating organization apologizing for the obvious mistakes made in that game. And the comparison to the CCA-Titusville game where CCA clearly scored with everyone at the game, the broadcast crew and players seeing that their player crossed the goal line on first effort and then the defender pushed the runner backwards and knocking the ball out. That turned to Titusville marching 95 yards down the field and scoring the winning points last second for the win. Even the brevard broadcasting crew stated that CCA player was in the endzone for the final nail in the coffin.

There is no excuse for what happened in the Cocoa-STA game. The Cocoa Tigers won that game in my not-matters and nobody-cares view. I am not familiar with what happened in the Titusville-CCA game. Could you provide some more information, or is there a link or video to view what happened? Thank you.

Thanks and figured that. But the one that got him ejected was a claim that he cursed but there's video evidence showing that wasn't the case

I would like to find out what specifically happened on the sideline to cause the ejection. It would be good information to know for any future situations or incidents.

You may be, or may not be more qualified than anyone on this board, but either way you really need to get over yourself. Coaches make mistakes (ask Cristobal) and referees, being HUMAN, do as well. If you are unwilling to concede that, you are absolutely delusional.

And no one needs your stamp of crotchety approval.

High School Football Officials make mistakes every game and there has never been a perfectly officiated game in football since the Rutgers-Princeton game in November 1869. There is no maybe, I AM the most qualified poster on this message board on the subject of High School Football Officials and Officiating.

Question, did you watch the Canes Gt game last night? & if so how do you feel about the fumble(not a fumble) that was reviewed & still stood? egregious and nationally televised Referee mistake. Do you feel highschool refs are above this ?

I didn't watch the game, but I saw the highlight. Are you asking if I think that High School Football Officials are perfect and never make mistakes? No I don't. Do I think that the vast majority of posters to this message board are qualified to rate and critique High School Football Officials? No I don't.

The nerve of people coming on a board like this and expecting to give their opinion.

"Opinions" are fine and what makes the message board great. When posters to this message board comment on a subject the very few of them no anything about, such as officials and officiating,  I choose to challenge and expose them. I like to read and learn from many other posters who are more knowledgeable than I am on many other subjects. I am the most knowledgeable poster on this message board when it comes to the subject of officials and officiating by far.

@Jambun82 there was no need to post this three times. I am not dimwitted. I also happened to be at that game. I will keep my opinion of the officiating to myself.

That was a mistake on my part that was posted three times. I do not believe that you are dimwitted either. However, you should keep your "opinion" of the officiating to yourself because you, similar to the vast majority of posters to this message board, are not qualified to rate or critique officials or officiating.

I agree. Also another reason why there are jokes going around about the refs making things even for Brevard with Broward with the Titusville win over Calvery Christian

Who is making these 'jokes", and what qualifications do these "comedians" have to rate and critique officiating and officials?

Refs are like cops. It's a fraternity, mess with one, mess with em all. Looking back at STA refs... I'm wondering if there are some lingering effects? Should that be the case then the Refs are also messing with kids future's. That is not cool...

Is there any chance of getting taxpayer funded insurance and pensions for officials similar to what police officers receive?

That is exactly right. They have consistently been the best Public School in Marion county for several years. But they have lacked the overall ability to get to a semifinal let alone a title game.

Vanguard lost a very close, extremely well-officiated, game in the state quarterfinals to Jones in 2021. That game went down to the end, and could have gone either way.
