This was my junior year at Southeast. Those Ft. Myers games were frustrating in '91-'92.

The '91 Noles were the first team Fort Myers beat in the state playoffs.  Won up there 24-15 and at home the following year 30-7.  Despite popular belief, FM had some nasty teams in the '90's.  

Lakewood Ranch and Braden River had more to do with the decline of Southeast, than transfers......as Southeast saw a dramatic loss in enrollment because those school open. Hate to break this on you but Coach Maechtle's last few years at Southeast, he had lost complete institutional control of the program.......I could tell you some stories about things that were going on behind the scene you wouldn't believe.........

Too many schools Darter.  Simple as that.  

I don't know him that well but have never heard a bad word said about him.  It's hard to say who is going to build a winning program in this area.  No loyalty at all.  Fort Myers will always be decent because of coaching.  Not " elite " as most posters use the term.  I think we were at the Armwood/Dwyer game in '10 when South Fort Myers lost to Norland in the semi-final at Traz.  South was a highly recruited team with Sammy Watkins and Dallas Crawford who could have played elsewhere.   I have no shame in bringing up the state championship trophies at Fort Myers.   3 straight girls basketball championships, and probably a good shot this year. Our '10 boys state basketball championship was special.  Back to back Floyd E Lay top sports program in 6A. Not ashamed to be a grad of that school, not to mention I was the valedictorian my senior year.  Rock solid 1.5 gpa summer school session B.  Look forward to seeing you in Daytona.  

Hard to say, Cjm04.  So many transfers and way too many schools.  Wish our  School Board would just enlarge existing schools instead of wasting money and opening new ones. Fort Myers, Oasis, ECS,  could be a two playoff win team.  Dunbar could join the group along with North and Lehigh despite their brutal schedule.  Will get u some better info in a few weeks.

The only signature win ECS has had in my memory is when they beat Glades Day years ago.  They would have no chance of beating the larger schools in SWF.. in the past.  Maybe this year will be different.  Far from the best program in Lee County.
 
 

Earnest is now the coach at Evangelical Christian in Fort Myers.  And the transfers are rolling in.  Should be a decent 2A team. 

No state championship but in my opinion doesn't take away from the fact  this father-son duo were great coaches - Sam Sirianni Sr & Sam Sirianni Jr.  - combined 60 years at Fort Myers High and every year a winning team.

1999- 6A North semi's- Lincoln 24 - Palm Bay 21. Championship: Lincoln 21 - Miami Southridge 14.
2000- 6A North semi's- Palm Bay 21 - Lincoln 20 (OT). Championship: Palm Bay 10 - Dillard 6.
2001- 4A North semi's- Lincoln 24 - Palm Bay 21. Championship: Lincoln 28 - STA 20.
2002- 4A North semi's- Palm Bay 44 - Lincoln 21. Championship: Palm Bay 19 - Tampa Jefferson 10.

Had an opportunity to talk to him several times in the early 80's when he would come into the old Southgate PO in Sarasota to mail game film. Was way more talkative than Joe Kinnan.........Joe was very hard to pull into a conversation beyond the customary pleasantries. There was a 20+ year period where Charlie Cleland/Tom Whitehurst -Sarasota HS, Paul Maechtle - Southeast, John Sprague - Riverview, and Joe Kinnan turned the Sarasota/Manatee county area into a real powerhouse of HS football.

Estero '98 won four on the road before losing in the final.

Don Latimer.  Fort Pierce Central.  ?

It is Don Latimer, Fort Pierce Central Class of 1973.  He played on FPC's 1971 4A state championship team.  He set a Canes record with 15 sacks in his senior year(1977).  He played in the 1978 Blue-Gray game and the Senior Bowl, and was named a first team All-American by The Sporting News.  Latimer was a first round draft pick of the Denver Broncos and played 6 seasons in the NFL.  He was elected to the Hurricanes Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

It would be great to be able to watch some games with some of the great people who post on this message board. There are a lot of very informed posters who make this forum very enjoyable to read and interact with. I am very grateful for that.

I can meet you all outside the stands depending on how busy I am as I bounce between the press box and the field.

It is EJ Baker, who graduated from Lakeland High in 1974.  He played at the U during a time when Lou Saban was coach, Ottis Anderson was an rb, and All-American defensive linemen Don Latimer and Don Smith were around.
