    Thanks for sharing that.
FYI-There were some neutral games played in Gainesville in the 60's.  The 1975 4A title game was played at a neutral site in central FL, just like the game you describe.

Thanks.....I was a junior in High school and that was my 1st state title team to see in person, had watched a playoff game at Tampa Stadium with Tampa Plant who was coached by Roland Acosta......but other than that my knowledge about the playoffs was limited at best at that point.......

From 72-76...(Other than 1973), a team from Leon County played for the state title, 1976 was Goodby. The Leon/Godby game that season was huge, Godby annihilated Leon that night winning for the very 1st time against Leon.  Leon had played for a state title the previous season. The win propelled Godby to the Playoffs but was costly however as Godby lost a key component of its wishbone attack I want to say his name was Victor Pompey. That Godby team may have been the 1st instance of a state tile game being played at a neutral site, as the state tile game against Carol City was played in Lakeland rather than at a on campus site that was the norm during that time.QB Sammy Knight and TB Chris Hobbs would later play for FAMU and took part in upset win over the University of Miami.

Miami was independent during the 70's and actively sought out national powers in its attempt to give the program some sense of legitimacy nationally.....lets not forget this was the program that lost to FAMU in 1979...(16-13), in Schnellenberger's 1st year at Miami......to give you and idea where the program was at that point. Same can be said of FSU who prior to Bobby Bowden belonged to the Metro Conference which it joined in 1976......playing teams out of state was just part of what Bowden saw was a necessity to obtain some sense of nationally recognition.....I want to say say in fact it was the win over Nebraska in Norman that was the key stone win for the FSU program to establish the program on the national level.....where former Sarasota Sailor Paul Piurowski forced a fumble to preserve the win over Nebraska in the early 80's.......both schools eventually joined bigger conferences in the 90's, that at that point limited opportunities to schedule games against premier college programs......was why in part when FSU joinned the ACC, Gators joked about it being the "ALL Coast Clear" conference because the meat of FSU regular season schedule was made up of teams that at that point weren't premier programs on the football field.
But in as far as recruiting, all three programs recruited beyond the borders of the state of Florida in the 60's, 70's, 80's etc........in fact Florida's 1st Heisman trophy winner isn't even from the state of Florida......think about that for a moment!

Dont know anything really about Cocoa, but the loss to Riverview tells me all I need to know about this Venice team's lack of elite physicality on the line of scrimmage this year. You have a backup QB that couldn't start at Manatee or Plant City, but yet he's managed to do just that this year for Venice at different points this year. My guess is, if Dollacosta is the least bit still injured or Peacock worries about re-injuring him  Friday night against Cocoa, Peacock saves him for next week against Manatee for the District Championship......because the Venice offense is limited big time with Overstreet at QB. Same with Taylor at RB, if he's still out Friday night.....Venice doesn't have a chance against Cocoa........I say neither plays because Peacock wants them healthy for next week against Manatee.....Cocoa 31 Venice 21

8A-R1 Orlando Evans lost 31-20 to Lake Mary
8A-R1 Deland beat West Port 44-7 (West Port is now 1-6, so this win not likely to help the Deland RPI much this coming week)
8A-R3 PB Central beat Forest Hill 41-21 (Good win as Forest Hill has a winning record)
8A-R-3 Monarch lost to Boca Raton 38-14
7A-R1 Buchholz lost to Fletcher 41-17
7A-R-3 Lakewood Ranch lost to Venice 49-6
5A-R4 Desoto County beat Labelle 28-10 (Labelle is now 2-5, so this win not likely to help Desoto County RPI much)

FL_HS_football got a reaction from peezy28 in Georgia get Florida again Marietta romping Edgewater
Marietta's had some good teams, some that have advanced beyond the 2nd round of the playoffs in the last 10 years. I believe Marietta actually has a number of D-1 players this year on its squad. But around Atlanta the real strength of Georgia HS football resides in Gwinnett County. Yeah you have some schools down south.....Lowdes, and Colquitt County come immediately to mind and when Jeff Herron was at Camden County his teams were regularly right there in the thick of things..........
Its too bad but I think this year STA and Lakeland are probably Florida's only 2 elite football teams......its just the reality of the way things are......again this year. Last year there were probably 2-3 more teams you could have added to that list. The Colquitt homer can run his mouth all he wants, but the reality for him is that last 2 years Colquitt rolled into the state title games as heavy favorites and got beat both times.......last year by Milton HS........Maybe because he's had nothing to brag about inside of GA, he finds some sense of satisfaction in gloating over the success GA teams have had beating Florida teams.......interesting however it usually about beating Florida schools that are just good...............not elite

I have always had respect for Lakeland.  Last season I made a thread that demonstrated how the Naughts did not inherit a lot of highly rated transfers to win their state title.  Nor have they this year, really.  It was the sheer number of transfers they got this year that got my attention.
I have to question what south FL powers Lakeland has beaten of late outside St Thomas.  Some of the south FL teams Lakeland has invited to come play are far from powers.
I also question how your data proves in no uncertain terms that Miami-Dade teams recruit better than Lakeland.  The number of highly-rated players on those MD teams may simply be a function of the relative numbers of talented players available in Miami-Dade.   There are a lot more 3- and 4-star players floating around Miami-Dade than there are in Polk County simply because MD dwarfs PC in terms of population.
Let's be real.  If a couple more 4-star players showed up on Lakeland's doorstep this year, would they have been turned away?  As it is, a couple of PC teams were highly impacted (Kathleen and Lake Gibson).  Kathleen lost at least 7 players to Lakeland as best I can tell.  I would challenge that the relative impact of those transfers was as great or greater than the impact on any MD team.
So, maybe Lakeland's lack of high star power has as much to do with "opportunity" as it does with recruiting efficacy.  My issue nowadays is not recruiting or transfers, per se.  I give everyone the benefit of the doubt concerning recruiting unless I have proof otherwise.  And a coach cannot necessarily control if players want to come play for him.  But a coach can control who plays.  How a coach today can look himself in the mirror and think it is sportsmanlike to win a state title by playing upwards of 20 transfers(some of them in front of kids who have paid their dues).  ....they have their lost their moral compass.

Last year Mississippi had the highest representation per capita of any state on the ESPN 300 list, with 14 players.  For some perspective, south FL (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties) had 18 players on the list and the population in south FL is 6 million people... double the population of the entire state of Mississippi.
From a per capita standpoint, Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida are all quite close in terms of talent.

I remember watching them play soccer and basketball against Oneco Community Christian when that was the extent of there male sports program.......my my my how the mighty have fallen. The last I saw the falcons play, was a playoff loss to Manatee. Came all the way from GA to  meet up with Wavebb, but he ended up having some unexpected medical issues then so that had to wait a few more years.....but got to meet Steve Berry later that night at Beef's when was still doing the traveling Friday night state wide scoreboard show on the radio....

I believe Venice like it Championship team of two years ago, has the physical maturity it possessed then on its offensive line this year. Its IMG 1st game out the gate, and like you indicated in your post IMG is young. Peacock likes the nickle and dime passing attack and Venice has 2 WR's that will enable Venice to attack IMG all night long  there......with a very physical QB, that understand the read option as well as he does. I'm not as sold on Taylor for Venice at the RB spot, but with that QB Venice has he'll make up for any short comings of Taylor at RB with his own feet....I pick this one for my upset special this week. Only because its IMG's 1st game of the season.......

Actually Manatee's Kicker has gotten alot of attention nationally. I believe last year he average about 80% getting the ball into the endzone on kickoffs and has a range for FG's in the 50 yard range. Punting they have a returning player as well, I cant see where they'd want to punt to Smith and let him break a long one.....so you may see Manatee sacrifice field position to keep that from happening by punting to the sidelines.......but your right Bowman, Graham, and Smith for Lakeland can all kill you with its special teams play for sure!
As far as the Lakeland backup QB, Castle inserted him last year as a freshman for the opening series against Manatee and he only marched Lakeland right down the field for a score.......so I'm not too worried about Lakeland at the QB position....even with the transfer out.......Besides Graham didn't look too shabby from the wildcat  this past Friday either!

The game will be streamed, and yes weather could possibly once again cause the game to be delayed or cancelled. Manatee has a new OC,  University of Florida grad Jaquez Green so that will be interesting to see what if any positive changes come from that? The Manatee Offense will be young once again, with only 1 senior among the starting group. The QB is a left handed Soph, that has some talent.....probably the most talented QB they've had since Cord Sandberg, but starting out against a team like Lakeland will be a tall order for him. There are 3 Juniors that have started on Varsity since their freshman year on the offense.......2 of them on the OL. Sophmore running back that broke off several long runs on Lakeland as a freshman last year, he's about 5'9" 225, obviously not a blazer but has very nimble feet.  3 other backs that should see time as well at the RB position...... There's some talent and size on the OL,  and above average talent at all of the skilled positions, but the Soph QB will be the Key as to how successful Manatee will be. I like the kid and see a real competitive edge in him to go with some natural talent....but again he's just a Soph.

On defense I believe they return 8 starters. They have a NG that I'm really excited about, that appears to be a real disrupter along the line of scrimmage he's 6'1" about 280 lbs, the have Ryan Ives 6'5" 265 lbs  coming back at DE, who's gotten some D-1 offers. Justin Porter 6'1" 220 lbs at LB who will be a 3rd year starter, Sequil Martinez 6'1" 210 lbs at LB who started as a Soph last year, as well as rising Junior at LB Sam Vave  6' 2" 221 lbs. Several others that started last year as well. From a size standpoint Manatee should be able to line up with anyone. Its Lakeland's over-all speed that I worry about. Manatee moved a starting WR to DB, have a member from the 4x100 relay team that barely lost to Lakeland at Regionals last years also in the defensive backfield, along with 3 other returning starters.
If they play I could see a game like Lakeland saw this past week with Osceola.....but I could also see them keeping it competitive like they did last year into the 4th QT......game was 28-14 before Bowman broke a run to seal the deal.

Legendary high school football coach Nathaniel "Traz" Powell was one of the great African American sports pioneers in Miami's history. Born and raised in Miami's Overtown section, Powell was a standout athlete at Booker T. Washington High School in the early 1940s. He went on to attend Florida A&M and was a 2-time Black College All American end. On December 6, 1947, Powell along with his Florida A&M teammates made history when they became the first black athletes to play in the Orange Bowl Stadium as part of the 1947 Orange Blossom Classic against Hampton Institute of Virginia. Powell scored the game's only touchdown making him the first African American to score at the Orange Bowl.
Following a brilliant college career, he returned home to Miami in 1948 and became the head coach at George Washington Carver High School in Coconut Grove. From 1948 to 1965, Powell led the Carver Hornets to 5 undefeated state championships. In 1966, Carver was downsized into a middle school as part the integration of the Miami-Dade County public school system. He then moved on to Mays High School in Goulds, where he won another state title in 1966. In 1968, Powell once again made history in the Orange Bowl when he led tiny Mays High to a 14-7 upset over traditional power Miami High. It was the first time the Stingarees had played an all-black high school.
By 1969, Mays was also downsized into a middle school and Powell's coaching career was over. In 21 years as a high school football coach, he compiled a 167-37-3 record and never had a losing season He later went on to coach track at Miami-Dade Community College North Campus and taught physical education. In 1980 Powell died from a heart attack. But he left a huge legacy. The football stadium at Miami-Dade College is named after him and is the home field to several of Miami's best high school football teams.
