Teacher unions are just like any large organization. They have positives and negatives. The negatives is obvious, they protect horrible workers and resist any kind of real change. However, strong union teacher union states get paid much more than Florida and usually have less students per teacher. Any talk of Florida teacher unions doing anything is a joke. They have zero power. Roughly 60% of teachers are even in the unions in Florida  and the number is dropping because they really cant protect workers when everyone is on a yearly contract. The only teachers who have a continuing contract are teachers who have been teaching in same district since 2008 and were already on continuing contract when 2010 law passed. The only thing teacher unions do now is negotiate contract and the school boards can refuse to really pass a contract and implement their own contract after the impasse and mediation fails.  Throw in the new state laws decertifying teachers unions when they fall below 50% membership and the removal of taking dues out of checks and the days of any teacher unions are numbered. Of course the new state union laws don't apply to police and firemen because they are political friends of the hacks in Tally and no wonder teachers cant run away from state fast enough once they have experience.

Most jobs dont require you to take homework home and grade papers and make lessons and then take classes to recertify and then take classes to try to earn a real wage either by getting a masters.  Plus alot of teachers coach and get paid very little for alot of work. A assistant fb coach usually gets around 3k for the following work. Spring ball 20 practices and 5 days for  conditioning. 4 days a week lifting in summer, 7 on 7 practices and tournament from Jan -April and then in summer again. Practice from august to mid November unless you make a run and go till December. If teaching is  such a great pay gig and easy job then why are 1 in 5 teachers leaving the profession or state to teach somewhere else.

I would not call any tournament under promotion/demotion model except the top a state champion. Call the rest anything you want. The goal is to provide the vast majority of student athlete's a good experience that help build character for the future and learn teamwork.  Its obvious with all the blowouts and the huge distance between the haves and have nots that the current system or even the metro system achieves what is best for the most students.  Teams want to have a fighting chance to at least compete in half their games and being a division with similar teams will help. The SAC calling a 3-7 team a state champion is pathetic. But I get why teams are moving to it or forming own associations.

This bill has zero chance of passing. No way Florida will ever pay  teachers and coaches well. State does not give a crap about education so good teachers and coaches leave the state in droves. Dont get me started on the crazy laws about movies, books and what is taught in schools.  The last big raise was all for new teachers and gave the veteran teachers squat.

I think you might as well let IMG in since they recruit like the other state powers do. Let some cheaters get a taste of their own medicine with a few 60-0 blowouts.

6-8  teams that recruit seems a tad bit low. Come on. That might make up the teams that recruit in Dade and Broward county alone. The real number of football factories that recruit is is closer to 24-32. Take out top 24-32 and let them beat each other up since they disregard the FHSAA rules anyway

I am sure some kids choose to play for the powers. However, it seems that today, many coaches and players recruit the players from other schools and never get punished for it. You have coaches liking players on social media and not a darn thing happens to them. CHEATERS. Lakeland can play with anybody when they get transfers but when they were limited after probation,  they were just another average team. Need an open division with about 36 teams and that would force the powers to beat each other up. Pick on someone their own size.

One of the reasons the old district champ and district runner up model worked in Florida is due to the fact you could reschedule a district game instead of another and just erase the non district game when bad weather hit.  You had to beat your competition head to head and not count on some secret half butt formula from Maxpreps and Fhsaa.  Cons were loaded district with 3 awesome teams and then the dreaded 2 or 3 team district. Wild cards in old days helped the one issue.

The issue with the metro/suburb idea is it only really helped some elite suburb teams who already made it far in the playoffs get a state title.  It squeezed metro teams in divisions with huge enrollment differences as well, which was not fair. Finally, the whole change from population to population density stunk to the high heavens because it was not in original idea. I liked districts for playoffs much better than max preps secret sauce fhsaa formula.

For all the crybabies posting on here. Explain why so much hate. Maybe you loved being able to thrown the best teams out of your division and let the metro teams beat the crap out of each other in that horrible system where the metro counties did not even go by population but some bs density rule. Its basically the same system we had for decades. Enrollment based classification. hello.  Go to promotion and demotion and hardly anybody would drop out. Let the cream of the crop ruse to top 3 divisions and rest fight it out for regional non-state titles below. The reason teams are dropping like flies is that they cant compete with the transfer recruiting cheating teams. Why would bad Orlando 7A teams want to compete with an all star team Edgewater? You will never get real change going by population alone and we all know it. So crybabies. What system do you want h8r?

Playing multiple games is torture for high school football teams. When hurricanes cause a team to play on a Thursday/Friday game and then turn around and play another on Monday or Tuesday and then  Friday  make proper game planning impossible and recovery non-existent.

Bingo Dr. D. You are soooo right. FHSAA will not care unless mass exodus. We can come up with a million reform ideas but enrollment based is easiest for the FHSAA and not going anywhere.
