Perspective reacted to PinellasFB in Reason maxpreps ranking a joke
The whole problem is removing margin of victory from the maxpreps formula.  How else will you measure how powerful teams are without comparing their performance against teams vs how other teams beat them?  MoV is the *only* way to gauge a team's performance vs a team vs how other teams performed vs that same team.  For example, if team A on average beats team B by 50 points more than other teams who played team B, then clearly team A is 50 points better on average than other teams.  However, without MoV, then team A is ranked the same as team C who beat team B by 1 point.
As I've mentioned before, without MoV you are left with Elo Chess statistical ranking which only gains significance over a large amount of samples which is much greater than the 10 game season team's play.

I don't know if he was running up the score but I do know that you can keep the score from getting that large.  If the score gets above 50 I'm going to do what I can to not score, short of taking a knee (I will take a knee not to break 80 though).  If it's 60 to 0 and your 4th string RB running behind the JV OL scores from a dive play, then there's nothing you can do.  If you throw a bomb and score, well that's just not cool.  I get that you have to get the backups work in the passing game, but if you already know you have a crazy mismatch in talent (it commonly occurs in HS) then you come into the game with a plan to get them the proper work while it's not out of control.  I will certainly take a knee just to keep the score from exceeding 80 or 90 though, damn. I would even punt on first down at that point.  Show some damn mercy to those clearly overmatched kids.
Edit:  I read the article and a lot of those points piled on at the end of the game were defensive scores.  I hadn't considered that so I can see how some games can get away from you even if you're trying to keep the score down.

Nobody is transferring to Gulf. Lol.
Before the 2021 they hired The coach Sean Eperjesi from the middle school there in New Port Richey after leading them to an undefeated season and first conf champ in over 40 years.

He has built a strong bond in the community so I’m assuming he has a lot more involvement and participation than years past. Football probably means something now to the kids. There is a lot of pride in NPR and that starts with the coach!

He was a 3 year starter at Robinson in Tampa and then was a 4 year starter at a D2 college. So he knows football.

I realize that the communities in SW Florida have much bigger problems on their hands than high school football - water, electricity, housing, food, etc.   That said, it'll be interesting to see what affect Ian has on the remainder of this season.  On the one hand, I know how important it will be the 'return to normal' and get the kids back onto the field for practice and games (for their mental well-being, to provide structure in their lives, etc.).  On the other hand, I also realize that government officials have to prioritize resources.
I heard something on the radio yesterday about Lee County's power grid was going to have to be completely rebuilt.   If true, who knows how long this might take.   What affect will this have on the schools in Fort Myers and Naples?
All that said, I also know that some good stories will come out of this -- schools helping schools, kids helping other kids, etc.   I look forward to hearing those stories.

We are scheduled to play Northport in a couple of weeks. We have already reached out to them and offered anything we can to help them return to normal. Even If this involves moving the game to our place or cancelling it all together. What ever scenario works best for them. Way more important things than football at this moment.

Their ad responded: things are really bad there now. they are hoping that FHSAA will allow the extension of the season and to try to get their games in later after they get things somewhat back to normal

I'm truly sorry for the loss of life  Prayers to Lee and Charlotte counties which too the brunt of the devastation.  My sister still lives in Lakeland and aside from no electricity, she is okay.  Prayers to the families that are displaced or dealing with health or injury issues.  Even though our commonality is HS football and no matter where you reside, I feel that the livelihood of humanity trumps everything.  Again, I pray that everyone connected to this board and their families are okay.  My mom is in Charleston, SC which is projected to get hit tonight so my worries are still not over.  At the end of the day, regardless of your religious beliefs or political affiliations, we all want the same thing regardless of how we get there.  Everyone stay safe!  Stay locked and loaded too...

For whatever reason, this rule is widely misinterpreted or unfamiliar to many.  It doesn't matter if the student started, doesn't matter if they were on varsity, doesn't matter if they participated at all.  Once you enter 9th grade you have 8 consecutive semesters of athletic eligibility.  Anyone who entered 9th grade in 2018, as these players did, is no longer eligible to participate in high school sports.

Just curious (and I'm too busy to take the time to look it up):  were any of those kids starting at private schools in the 8th grade?  If so, that wouldn't count against their eligibility.
Second thought:  because seasons got shortened for many teams a couple of years ago because of Covid, FHSAA may have made an exception - similar to what the NCAA did for college kids, so that the kids ended up with an extra year of eligibility.
No dog in the fight from me; just throwing out a couple of possible explanations.

But here's the rub . . . you lose most of your games (or finish under .500) and kids today say "dang, I don't want to be part of a losing team," so several of them decide to transfer and then, as a result, they're not very good next year and their record reflects it.

You might have too high of expectations of high school ball.  It's not like college where they can practice and watch film all day and execute with high precision.  High school ball is supposed to be basic football.  Now some teams, especially the high profile teams, will have high level coaching and it will show on the field. The complexity of the packages they run is pretty sophisticated for HS level.  Of course this comes at a price and the kids are more focused upon football than school and they will pay a long term consequence for this unless they are good enough to play in college.  I do worry these programs don't have the kids educations as their priority.
Clearly we aren't going to see eye to eye on this and I am not going to lie that I too find a HS game on ESPN with loaded teams is fun to watch but unlike you I also enjoy seeing a couple of no-name teams going out there on Friday night and playing their hearts out.  For me, the raw emotion, the band and the atmosphere is high school ball. The talent level on the field is irrelevant.

Perspective reacted to Dr. D in FHSAA Power Rankings
The FHSAA is using the "modified" MaxPreps rankings, which uses MaxPreps' proprietary formula while eliminating the margin of victory component.  According to MaxPreps, "the system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database.  Generally, the more a team wins, the higher the ranking.  However, the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule".  At present, the FHSAA website just says "check back later" for rankings.  The first FPI rankings came out last year after week 5 games, so I personally would expect the first FHSAA Power Rankings to be out in the next week or two.

I suppose this is personal taste.  I personally prefer to see a 4-star QB throwing to whomever luck had as his teammate that year, not some hand-picked 4-star stolen from the neighboring school.  That's the purity of high school sports.  Even college is tainted with the transfer free for all and NIL.  Yes you can see a few NFL teams playing at the college level but that's not competition.
I think it's stupid to load a single team with cherry picked players from other teams.  What's the point of that in high school ball?  Of course you will bash the heads in of non-cherry picked teams.  I like it where your school will rise or fall depending upon the kids moving through your program in any given 4-year period.  Once in a while you are loaded and go on a run.  Other years you are between strong classes and you fall back for a few years.  This is how it's supposed to be.  Some teams will always be good because they are in a talent rich zone while others will struggle for the opposite reason.  However, even the low talent areas can have some good kids running through it for a couple years where they have special seasons that will be remembered for years.  This is just not possible anymore and who enjoys seeing the same teams in the playoffs year after year now?

Guess it’s hard for the fans who are lovers of win at all & any cost, take players from tri counties, make the top 25 nationally, to recognize the players on these “poor” teams playing against “poor” competition, that are young men under these helmets & uniforms. I miss the days simple community HSFB. I’ll always acknowledge them & pat em on the back!!!!!
