Holy Moly reacted to Dr. D in Calling all Mathematicians
With the release of the first FHSAA Power Rankings coming soon, I am hoping there is someone out there who has been trying to gain some insight into the super-duper, top-secret, never-to-be-revealed MaxPreps/CalPreps/FHSAA Power Rankings formula. I have done some high school mathematics and linear regression, and my conclusion is that these Rankings are weighted approximately 60% to a team's overall record, and approximately 40% to strength of schedule. Meaning a team seeking a higher seed would be better off with a higher winning percentage and an average schedule, as opposed to a lower winning percentage and a more difficult schedule. Information that might be useful to coaches when setting up a schedule, but which seems to be guarded with the security of nuclear codes. Anyway, if there are any mathematical geniuses out there, it would be interesting to hear your observations. Thanks.

Holy Moly reacted to DarterBlue2 in House Bill 225 and the changes coming to the FHSAA
It certainly seems that if Josh has correctly interpreted this change, that IMG National per his example would be eligible for the state series.
But this begs several questions: 1. Would they have to compete within a district in order to do so? 2. What classification would they play in? 3. As you asked above, would they be allowed to recruit nationally for talent? 4. If the answer to 3 is yes, what teams would be willing to be in the same classification with them?
It seems that the balance of power would be so unequal, that even the Central's and St. Thomas's of the world would blush, as I assume that in any given decade, IMG would be State Champs in that division at least 9 times winning at least 8 of those 9 times in blowout fashion if they continue to adhere to their current recruiting philosophy.
This, in my opinion, would be a total disaster for while every so often a "regular school" may be able to pull off a win against IMG, it would be literally impossible for even the consistently good schools (whether they actively recruit or not), to be competitive with IMG year in and year out. This would further accelerate the state series towards the farce it seems destined to become and would likely lead to the exit of many schools from the organization.

Holy Moly got a reaction from DarterBlue2 in Any new teams in 2023?
Central is finally playing football. Small rural town near Milton. Starting off as JV in 2023 and then moving to Varsity from what I seen from the news here in the panhandle.

Having seen the transformation of Choctaw from 0-8 in 2020 (the year prior to Coach Beasley's arrival) to where they are now, it's like FIU becoming the Georgia Bulldogs in two years. As has been said of Poinciana, with the right head coach (and staff) and the right culture, almost anything is possible.

Holy Moly reacted to Perspective in FHSAA Playoff Pairings
Again, I think the goal was to give everybody a chance to play football games this fall without having to worry about teams playing a specific number of games against specific opponents, determining district champions and reconciling RPI's for the teams that were adversely affected in different ways by Covid. And, of course, to maintain membership. Will there be inequities? Absolutely. Will there be playoff football? It appears so. In 2020, that's a fair trade off as far as I'm concerned.
