Could drastic changes be coming to FHSAA Playoffs in 2017

As some have suggested, shrinking of a classification does many away with many of the "negatives" of the current system. It seems weird that we would invent a Rube Goldberg machine solution when there are simpler answers. Even my own promotion/relegation answer is complicated. Just to give an example, Lincoln has been ranked #1 (in the very first proposal) to the point where they might not even make the playoffs. This a team that won it's first round playoff game against a team (Robert E. Lee) that has been consistently in the playoffs in each proposed scenario. So my question becomes, did Lincoln not prove they were a quality team by winning the playoff regardless of their 4-6 record.

Lincoln did prove it so I won't argue with it. I have something I want to post here and I may just post here it to show everyone. Something else I worked on a while back and since things are very active right now with this topic I am going to pop on here. Once I do, I would love to see your opinion of it.

Something is going to happen wither it is this or some modification to the system we have now. The playoffs need a jolt somewhere, but this playing cross district and having rematches Round 2 just doesn't do anything. I will also say though if given time to allow the FHSAA to test this new system we might see some incredible things. The data used so far is based use part of schedules with teams in districts so it is not reflecting totally of the teams possibly being in a conference in their county/area with the schedule not being mandated with district games either. 

 

There is a lot here, but this is going to be fun to see what the end result comes to be.

This is an option that is being floated about allowing district champs to get in (would be seeded still based on points but they would be seed 1-4 first) and then the other four spots are earned based on points. Very possible this happens, but I will say this coming from my own opinion is that if they did this, then expect the FHSAA to tighten up the districts and make it to where its going to be tough to appeal up or down. Play where you are assigned and see how you do. 

That's how it should be. You should not be able to move up or down. You play where you are assigned. I think there would be very few teams that would choose to opt out if given the hard stance. If you don't like where the figures put you, then play an independent schedule.

First call me Josh.... just the Mr. Wilson thing gets me a little crazy LOL (not your fault)

 

The thing is we are not sure totally if it prevents 1st, 2nd and 3rd round rematches because the biggest thing here is we are using data that semi forces those rematches based upon teams playing each other in a district setting. Good chance that say Columbia for example is scheduling all 10 games. Almost every single 7A team they played in district likely wouldn't be played by Columbia thus the rematch is not possible. If the FHSAA was to test this out for say even two years or four years to get a gauge on things, what is it to hurt to do this and if its not working out we can revert? I rather seem try something out totally and know the answer than not do it at all and have a lot of what ifs.

Would still keep eight classes, but the approach is different:

 

All numbers used are from 2015 enrollment numbers. Independent schools were removed before dividing up to make this worthwhile. 1A was bumped up to even the number of schools out. Note Wildwood is not considered for 1A as they have to sit out three three years and this year is year two since they broke from district play due to not fielding a team in 2015. Also note since this was done Bronson went independent, so 1A would be 39 schools at this point based upon this, but 1A has done well with 38-40 schools on average.

 

8A - 50 Largest Schools - 2,590-4,609

7A - 76 schools (would be 77, but Tate was moved to 6A due to geographic isolation, not sending them to Jacksonville for district) - 2,145-2,589

6A - 77 schools - 1,801-2,144

5A - 76 schools - 1,530-1,800

4A - 76 schools - 950-1,529

3A - 40 schools - 470-949

2A - 40 schools - 1-469

1A - 40 schools - 1-665 and rural

 

The reason I suggest 8 is you find a lot of balance. I had no trouble creating districts between 5-8 teams in most classes until I got to the lower classes. Only in one instance did I have a three team district, but also had several 4 team districts. 7A, 6A, 5A and 4A I used a 12 district format instead of the current 16 district format. This seems to work nicely. The rest use the 8 district format, but I suggested just doing two regions instead of four in those classes to make a new playoff format work properly.

Only reason we had a rematch with Lincoln last year was by use scheduling them as a non confremce game but it was not because of being forced, any system has a chance for a rematch if the team willingly scheduled a team from their class

I just think you are asking to much of 1A to add Taylor county, Madison, Union county, Baldwin and Fort White to 1A. 660 kids vs a school like Hawthorne with 140 to 150 is just asking to much.

However, you say that, but Hawthorne was in the hunt for a playoff spot until the very end so that is where I am trying to figure out where this would hold water at. I get what you are saying, but I think it all goes back to the Coaching and the players you have not your enrollment. If Jefferson County (second smallest of the 1A schools) was able to reach the playoffs against some bigger teams and Hawthorne was close, it shows the system is doing what it should be if the right things are in place.

I like the thought of keeping districts in play along with the point system. If you win your district your in the playoffs point blank. The rest of the playoffs teams are decided using the point system. I think this would allow everyone invoveld to see exactly how the point system would play out. Your gonna see rematches no matter what format you use.

 

But looking at your proposed districts, class 6a region two you could see a playoff bracket that consisted of Armwood, Mainland, edgewater, Vierra, lake Gibson, and winter haven..... Talk about excitement.
