Do 1A teams typically have enough kids to field JV teams or are most varsity only?

Pahokee’s always had a JV team, but the roster is usually 7th/8th/9th graders. They’re usually 1/2 loss team. This years team went 6-2, only losses to Palm Beach Central.

How do you have a 7th and 8th graders on a JV squad?  I guess the school has middle school and HS combined?  They dont have youth ball in there area either?

Most “true” 1A teams have a JV team and it’s just like 561 fan stated. It is made up with mostly 7-9th graders from the middle and high school. Most “true” 1A schools are middle and high because they have always been that way. Most 1A schools have somewhere between 25-40 kids on a roster and usually 10-15 seniors would be great. Other 1A schools that may have another 200 kids or so that attend a charter school are able to have a varsity and jv made up from their 9-12. Those schools also somehow manage to have 20-25 seniors every year. But I guess mathematically it makes sense. If I have a school with 400 kids and have 14 seniors then a school with 700 kids will have 25 seniors, only usually that school is 4A.

Most 1A schools are Middle/High schools (6-12). Our youth teams go up to about 6th grade (12 years old) and kids are allowed to play JV (football) in 7th grade. Frostproof, Ft. Meade, Wildwood, Hawthorne are all 6-12 (Middle/Senior) high schools. Pahokee is the only 1A public, south of Polk County.

Theres 1 major exception to the 6-12 school in North Florida. They used to be in the same classification as Glades Central (4A) but some way, they’ve lost about 600+ kids.

I cant imagine a 7th grader going against a much more physically developed 10th grader.  That just doesnt seem safe at all.  My 14 year old son is 220 lbs and started on varsity this year for an 8A school but he would've gotten annihilated as a 7th grader playing JV football.  I worried for his safety this year as a freshman on varsity even.  He was probably developed enough as a 185 lb 8th grader last year to safely play on JV but no way as a 7th grader.  Yikes.

I totally understand the point you are making, but I believe the reality is that in the 1A world, all of those 'more physically developed 10th graders' are all playing on their respective varsity teams.
