Miami Central

Is it just me or since the state title game in 2010 against Central that Dr. Phillips hasn't been the same.

Dr. Phillips 2012 and 2013 may have been close to that 2010 team.  Dr. Phillips has actually been one of the more consistent programs in the state the last few years.  I can't remember the last time they were not at least a top 40 team in FL...

Perhaps PipeDreams will have an opinion/answer...

Slick, I saw that title game. It was close. I believe some of the coaching has changed. I'd look there first, but I got no knowledge. They are a big team and have many D-1 type athletes. More then Mainland for sure. Darter and Pipe Dreams would know the answer to your question.

The 11-1 team in 2013 was upset by Plant but was super talented. Basically every team would have competed in the title game for the given year minus 2011. Apopka beat DP in the final four in 2012 (38-19) but that was a team DP had beaten prior in the year.

The playoff losses have been close the past three years

2015: by 1 (round 3)

2014: by 3 (round 3)

2013: by 1 in OT (round 2) --- best team since 2010

Also Dan, DP does fight. They've overcome big deficits over the years. Your post was just nasty - you have seen 2 games. No fight? Mainland DP was 14-7 in the 4th quarter and a pick 6 and a long run by Mainland sealed it last year. Sorry our players couldn't catch Killins, who you boasted about for years. Heart can't make you run a 10 second 100.

Chip on the shoulder syndrome? The players and the coaches are clueless? How? What the hell are you talking about? Do you GO to practice? Do you KNOW Rodney Wells and what he means to the team and former players?

That's a lot of shade to throw from 50 miles away. You are trashing the whole program.

Ok, where do I start. First off, The Mainland players are "clueless" to the fact that they don't always have the most talented team. Mainland has the "chip on their shoulder." Or some might call it an inferiority complex. Every game is a manhood challenge for Mainland regardless of the opponent. Sorry for the confusion. That better ? Now get this part straight. At no time did Dr Phillips in the two '15, '16 games with Mainland look like the better team (IMO). Both were 20 point wins. Our most resent games with Ft Pierce Central(2), American Heritage-Plantation(2),and Miami Central(4) were eye opening. Bucs went 3-5 and could have been 0-8. Dr Phillips showed me little of what those others did on the field. Didn't see it. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe not.

Apopka would give Mainland a much tougher time then DP.  Who see's that offense with those athletes ? Only teams that play them yearly get enough practice time to work on defending it. Once in a bluemoon type teams have trouble. In two years I never saw the "fight" in DP. They knew they were going to get beat. Mainland could be 5-5 and they would always think they were the better team and fight like hell to prove it. It's a chip on the shoulder syndrome. Real or imagined they must prove themselves. They play like a Dade County team. They don't have the same athletes, but they're clueless to the fact.... Buc to my last breath

Totally agree with all of this

I thought they'd take a step back this year with the slip in talent level from the last few years but they have not missed a beat

FLFB, the key is Sr QB Denzel Houston. He's the best to ever wear a Mainland quarterback's uniform. Through seven games he has been unstoppable. Mainland will go as far as he carries them. Next year that's another story and another rebuild.

They should win the state title. What round will the offensive play calling cost them? Semis or Finals this year?

Dr. Phillips will win their first two playoff games. The Tampa/Sarasota district is just too weak. After that, it gets cloudy. They could lose in the: third round (Vero/Osceola/FPC); semifinal (Apopka/Seminole/Jax team); or in the final to Flanagan/South Ridge/Miramar/Coral Gables.

My take, or rather my son's take, on Dr. Phillips is that they have always lacked the kind of mental toughness that it takes to go all the way. Thus, when they meet teams of similar talent they choke. Of course, if you consistently produce or end up with top talent, sooner or later, you have your turn. The question is when? I totally get Dan's perspective on Phillips. While Mainland did not destroy them this year or last, the result was really never in doubt after a quarter. In that sense, though they may have equivalent talent, they are not Mainland.

FPC may not even make playoffs if they lose to Vero next week and last Centennial and i was NOT impressed they dropped one potential TD pass and fumbled TWICE in the RED ZONE to 1-5 Centennial the worst team in our weak ass district.

And Vero they not beating Osceola this year Vero Beach sucks when is one not at their home field and two when its a power team i maybe wrong but i've seen all of Vero's games and im not all that impressed especially schedule wise.

That 2003 Mainland team tho...talk about defense....

That was a great all around team. O,D, and Kicking. There were 5 D1's on the defense. The current DC for Mainland(Travis Roland) was 1st team All-State MLB on that 2003 team. He is a very smart guy. And was one of the best open field tackler's I have ever seen.

Seabreeze is a beach school. Maybe 200 yrds from the surf at most. 95% of their athletes were bused in from the other side of the intercoastal. Miss the bus and walk 10 miles home. Their long time HC (Beach) brought the Spread offense to Daytona 15 yrs ago. He saw the hand writing on the wall (kids want to be closer to home, athletes or not) and took the $$$ in Georgia. He's the OC for Tifts County.

Atlantic High (1995) took in some of Mainland's fertile athletic territory. Not so much football but basketball. Mainland was a state Champion in '95,'96,'98 in Basketball. Most of the team now is made up of football players. So no year round hoops. Mainland doesn't have a full team until after the Christmas break.

Dan in Daytona, I've always considered Mainland as a hard nosed, physical team especially on the defensive side of the ball.   What happened when your boys went out to play St. Eds?  That game caught be by surprise big time.  I couldn't watch passed halftime and at that point the game looked even (albeit shitty calls from the zebras).   Turnovers I'm guessing?

BTW Mainland's Jachai Polite has gotten some decent playing time for the gators.   He and Jabari Zuniga (other freshman from Ga) have impressed the times they've been in.     They both will probably see the field more now that UF's Bryan Cox Jr is out possibly for the year.

954 Gator, I hate to blame officials for any loss, but they didn't do Mainland any favors. Mainland didn't ever stop them on offense, so it looked to be a 45-44 type game. Bucs recovered the opening on side kick, but an inadvertent whistle cancelled the recovery. Bucs down 17-0, come back score 17 straight (17-17). Kickoff deep, recover fumble, run it down to the 5 yard line. Officials rule Mainland player, who made initial contact with kick returner, ran out of bounds to avoid block then came back in to hit receiver. Film showed otherwise. He was blocked out of bounds. I've never seen that call before. Also it didn't help that the promoter ripped the school off of $10K, and air flights were cancelled and at the last minute Mainland took a two day "Bus Ride" to Cleveland. St Edward's was a great team, but they fumbled 3 kickoffs, Mainland recovered all 3, but got credit for only one. Polite is a good kid. If he ever gets a nasty streak like ex-Mainland Buc and current Jets DT Leonard Williams, look out.

Well again you are wrong. DP has lost close playoff games and in my opinion it has nothing to do with the mentality of the team. When have we given up in a playoff game?

Ever think we may have just lost a couple straight blackjack hands? Sometimes streaks are the opposite of consecutive titles. The law of large numbers will even out.

That was your man Darter talking about mentality. Mid, you seen to have a comprehension issue. Remember,  Avenues - North and South, Streets- East and West ( City Planning 101 ).

How's Seabreeze??? I know both Seabreeze and Mainland are both from Daytona Beach, yet all we hear about is Mainland. Mainland must attract a lot of this talent.

Mainland has a lot of talent within its borders. Seabreeze does not. It is more like a Lake Brantley in Seminole County talent wise. However, the difference is that Brantley has a nice program from youth football up that caters to its system. So, the kids enter Brantley for their next chapter. When Marc Beach was at Seabreeze, he implemented the spread and attracted some good athletes to compliment what they had within their Zone. However, Beach got frustrated due to salary and an inability to beat Mainland, as well as other issues. So he departed to Georgia. Since he left, they have struggled.

Mainland, on the other hand, has a coaching staff chock full of alumni, who are committed to the school. So, they don't have any trouble keeping their talent at Mainland. In fact, they are one of the most unlucky teams in the state. Had Mainland been in 8a or 5a over the period that they kept losing to Central, their is little doubt in my mind that they would have won at least one State title.

    • Okay, how about that STA vs. Ida Baker matchup in your first round?  Does your analogy extend to South Florida slappies?  My opinion is simply that no one (except CoachGraham, apparently) would be interested in the 1 vs. 512, 2 vs. 511, and 200 other mismatches such a format would produce, regardless of geography.  But I could be wrong.  And now I'm thinking I should have skipped college.
    • Complaining about North Florida slappies losing to South Florida powers is like someone graduating high school complaining that companies are only hiring college graduates and not them. And then a company saying ok to make it fair, we will open division and only hire high school graduates.
    • First I want to express my apologies for my absence the last few months. Without going into much detail I have had some personal life struggles I have been dealing with on top of figuring out the direction to take FloridaHSFootball.com in. Things have finally settled out some over the last few weeks although I am not completely out of the woods just yet. Some of the decisions about what direction to take FloridaHSFootball.com have been forming over this time while I went through things. Part of me wondered if it was time to go, but really it is not at all. Thankfully, a loyal supporter near me in Gainesville decided to put their mouth where their money is and did a little investing and today FloridaHSFootball.com launched its first-ever Mobile App. With that said it comes with the sunset of the MVP Membership Subscriptions and thus FloridaHSFootball.com will be 100% free for the first time in a while. This comes as needing to get the clearances with Apple and Google and the current subscription platform we have is not syncing with Apple's system nor with the App itself. Its best we go in this direction to grow fans again and being able to put them facing forward with an app on their phone going forward. Here are the download links for the apps: iOS (Apple): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/floridahsfootball-com/id6477621728 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floridahsfootball.app&hl=en_US&gl=US   For now the forums will not be available directly in the app. At some point I maybe looking at changing the whole forum software that could eventually integrate into the app. It will be a while before this happens so things will go on as they are here.   I also apologize for any of the spam and troll accounts that have managed to find their way around the security protocols in setting up new accounts. It seems every day these things find ways to pass through control systems. I am going to be looking at getting this solved and will keep an eye on things here as we go along.   Please feel free to reach out to me if you all need anything, want to chat or have any suggestions.   -- Josh
