Lely 90 - Barron Collier 56

I just noticed this score from last week.  I normally hate it when a team runs it up unnecessarily but when you give up 56, scoring 90 seems appropriate.  Lely had a RB run for 423 yds on just 17 carries!  Insane game.  Did anybody happen to witness this one?

I saw it triple taked, laughed, saw the two schools that played, laughed a little harder, and kept scrolling. 
 

insane nonetheless. I would’ve been half tempted to let BC score 1-2 more tds so I can get the 100 points, I mean at this point , defense been out the window so WHY NOT!?, WHYYYYYY NOT

As I recall, the spread was 33, so Lely really needed that last TD to cover.

It’s not Lely’s responsibility to take knees in the 3rd quarter or punt on 1st down. 
 

It’s Barron Collier’s job to stop them from scoring 90. If they are upset about it then maybe they are in the wrong business. Maybe they belong in the SSAA. 
 

If you run the ball every down in the 2nd half then by definition you are not running the score up even if you are scoring at will. Especially if you have your 2nd and 3rd stringers in. 
 

But the losing team should also be running every down or else all bets are off.

I don't think Lely scoring 90 qualifies as running up the score since BC scored 56 and was actively in the game until late.  But to your point, I don't know if I agree.  High school and youth ball are unique cases where one team can be so completely mismatched physically that the better team does have a responsibility to show mercy to this other team.  You can score at will in the first half and then show them mercy in many ways in the second half.  You can put in your 3rd/4th team and run it up the middle every play.  If you score you score, but you did your responsibility.  You can agree to shorten the game to 5-8 min quarters in the second half.  I have seen first hand how kids feel after game where they were run up on in youth ball.  These are kids and we still need to teach them how to be good to other human beings.

 

Now it is a bit different if it is a hated district foe or a heated revenge game.  Maybe you do rub their noses in it a bit because you hate them as much as they hate you.  However, the coach still needs keep a brawl from breaking out and if it is getting really testy out there, diffuse the situation.  Read the room coaches.

Now margin of victory matters in the rankings so everyone should be running it up.  We would run it up but we can't score more than 14 points in a game

Maybe a couple of unpopular opinions. But, my thoughts differ from pretty much everything on here. Florida already has the tightest running clock rule that I have seen. Many other places it is 42 (or at least it used to be).  If the mercy rule is not enacted because they are staying within 35, it is still a game. Also, a lot of posts on here call for taking it easy by running up the middle. I agree, call off the dogs. Play 3rd string, 4th string, freshman, whatever it takes to level the field for the rest of the game. But, those 3rd and 8th stringers (yes exaggeration) deserve to play if they get their chance. Throw the ball, run the ball. Play like it is the only chance you will ever have to play under the lights, it might be. Teams such as Apopka and DeLand (probably 50 others in the state I am unaware of) do their business running the ball up the middle. The clock is running either way. Throwing could be far more merciful than running in some situations. Soapbox relinquished.

I would only be afraid of passing because I know the losing team would take it as running it up and I wouldn’t want to risk my kids getting dirty shots taken on them for what they perceive as embarrassing them. Dive at their knees. Hit them from behind etc. not worth it

But i would NEVER tell 3rd-8th stringers to give anything less than 100 percent if they finally are able to get in.

Worst position for a kid to play on a team that has a coach that respects the game is WR.   Inevitably, by the time you finally get into the game, the coach is, understandably, running the ball on every play and you never have a chance to make a catch in a game.     #firstworldproblems

Just a little context.  Running clock rules in adjacent states:

Alabama: no mercy rule; teams have an option for a running clock if a game is out-of-hand and if both coaches agree

Tennessee and Georgia: mercy rule at half-time if 30-point or more differential

S. Carolina and N. Carolina: mercy rule at half-time if 42-point or more differential

So Florida is not the most punitive or most generous application of the mercy rule.  What is a problem is that game results from different states played under different rules are entered into a national database (MaxPreps), which can skew the ratings of teams in the database.
