Madison County - In a close game.

CCC - Could go either way. CN is a good team

Gadsden - It will be a long trip for Booker T. I'll take Gadsden because of homefield advantage.

MNW - Only the FHSAA can stop the Bulls

Jones - Tough game to pick. I'll go with homefield advantage. There's a reason Jones is undefeated.

STA - Could go either way based on how STA has been playing. I'll take strength of schedule

West Boca - WB is the best team in PBC. Southridge's quest for a title ends in Boca Raton

Osceola - In a nail biter. Buchholz is a very good team, but I think physicality and line play gets the Kowboys the win.

Venice - Venice's first real test in the playoffs. I believe Columbus hangs tough but comes up just short.

Lake Mary - Lake Mary gets revenge. It won't be close.

The only easy picks this week are the Lake Mary Dr. Phillips game and the Miami Northwestern game vs Eau Galle. All of the others were pretty tough to very tough to pick. Now DP may just win and I'll have egg in my face. But I doubt it. Lake Mary is on a mission and should do to them what Apopka did to Edgewater back in the 2001 regional finals after the Eagles had given the Darters its only regular season loss.

I like your picks but Raines is sitting undefeated. Should Northwestern be concerned and I think Booker T. Washington might pull it out.

Raines is undefeated. But I don't think they have played the quality competition that MNW has. So, I think the Bulls will win state and probably comfortably.

Yes, BTW could pull out the win. But winning in small, rural counties where the whole community turns out to the game is difficult; and BTW does not usually travel well. Plus, it's likely a 9 to 10 hour road trip by bus, so they will need to be there a day early and I am not sure if there will even be a good practice facility nearby for the kids to get properly warmed up and loose. Gadsden County has won most of their games in blowout fashion and in their KOC, they played Venice very tough. So, its obvious they have a very good team for a small school. The game will be tight and if it were held in Dade or a neutral site, I would like BTW's chances. I just feel that on the road, in the conditions they are going to face, if the two teams are as equally matched as I think, they will be at a big disadvantage.

    • Same thing my cousin A-Town on here said about Spanish River....
    • I'll play devil's advocate just a little.   As soon as you inject the "human element," you create a risk of bias.  It happens at all levels.   In college football, coaches and sportswriters from the south tend to vote for teams from the south while coaches and sportswriters from the midwest tend to vote for the teams from the midwest.   To a certain extent, it's natural.  I can see the same thing happening at the high school level if you involve coaches, writers, web hosts, etc.  I understand the argument in favor of inserting a little humanity into the process, but that will undoubtedly create a possibility of bias for and against teams based on nothing more than where the teams are located.
    • I totally agree with you 100 percent. Human element is needed. I have yet to see a computer watch a football game.
    • Would like to think that pride, integrity, character, honor would prevent the scenario you describe, but this is high school football in Florida.  The Week 11 non-district games would be a perfect time to “rest” some key players (“load management” as they call it in the NBA), heal up “injuries”, or give the back-ups some playing time. The bigger issue is that it is extremely unlikely that MaxPreps will identify the “best” 8 teams in the state.  MaxPreps is excellent at ranking teams at the end of the post-season, but not as reliable at the end of the regular season.  And why do MaxPreps rankings differ from the FHSAA Power Rankings, the LAZ index, Joshua Wilson’s FPRI, etc (no disrespect to the latter two)?  Which one is the most accurate?  Without a human element included in the selection process, MaxPreps will identify 8 teams that look the best to their particular variables, weighting, and formula, but this biased process will not guarantee the intent of the Open Division is met – identifying the best of the best.
    • what happens if, your 8-0, district title is secured, your lingering around the 6,7,8 spot in state max preps rankings.  however, you know, your not going to run the gambit of west boca, chaminade, venice, st thomas, columbus, miami central, etc, etc, etc.  and,,,,, coach dumps last 2 weeks of season, 8-2 and fall out of max preps top 8.  and run the table in your playoff division.... is it better to be 8th ranked in max preps and lose at some point in that bracket or  10th ranked and roll thru your division to a state title?  is the class 3405-A,  state champ better than 2nd round loss in open division  someone does this, i can promise it.
