Dr. Phillips 21, Winter park 10 Both Dr. Phillips and Winter Park were debuting new quarterbacks and DP’s Jake Belcher, a move-in from West Virginia, got the upper hand. Coach Rodney Wells was pleased with his newcomer and also happy with the way the Panthers ran the football and the work by his defensive line. “It went well. Jake looked good. He made some throws and ran the ball very well,” Wells said of Belcher, a rising junior. “He’s still learning the offense and the speed of Florida, but he looked good. Made all good decisions had had no turnovers.” Running back Zion Matthews scored two touchdowns and Lilraylin Harrison scored once. Wells also pointed out slot receiver Zhytrez Ervin as making some nice catches.

Wells also said defensive linemen rising junior Demarco Henderson III, rising seniors Stephen Nicholas Jr., and Jayden Buckhanon “totally dominated the game up front.” Still missing from the Dr. Phillips lineup was standout linebacker Maurice Jones Jr., who has missed the entire spring due to an injury, as has safety Jeremiah Fort.

Buchholz 15

Berkeley Prep 14

Berkeley Prep was up 14-7 before the backups were inserted early in the 4th quarter.  Game was very even.  Would love to see these teams matchup in a meaningful game.  BP created 3 turnovers which was the difference in the ballgame.  Buchholz DL and LB’s are very strong.

Went to Ft Myers jamboree with the Green Wave hosting Lake Wales and Port Charlotte.  PC is clearly a powerhouse.  They handled Lake Wales fairly easily and Ft Myers was no match.  PC QB Logan Flaherty played at a top level with his arm and his feet.  Hard to find a PC weakness.  The DL is somewhat small.

Lake Wales should be fine this year with the usual bevy of athletes.  QB transfer Chad Williams will need to get sharper for the offense to click.  Lake Wales should Lake Wales this year.

Ft Myers QB Dominic Ardezzone has the best arm the Green Wave has seen in a while.  He needs to get sharper like Williams needs at Lake Wales.  The Green Wave should be able to put up some points if they provide adequate blocking.  WR Fred Jackson looks a star in the making.

Great insight. I remember that thriller we had back in 2019 when we hosted ft Myers in the second round. Dillard came in 11-0 on the year & ended up winning a thriller 35-31 lol.

do the green wave still run that weird ass wing T ?

No.  Former Charlotte Tarpon and Florida Gator QB Justin Midgett is the offensive coordinator now.  He is introducing some  new schemes.

That Wing-T is tough to defend against! Especially if you don’t see it much.

Most of the time a team that lacks athleticism will run it to counter the speed on defense. That’s why it’s popular with the rural teams.

However, I did see Williston run it live as well as some triple option and single wing, and it was beautiful. And they had some dogs!

Close game. If you went how was the atmosphere?

Just saw the highlights on TC Palm. We are up at my in-laws in Tennessee. Our daughter picked up her 2nd Masters from the University of Kentucky on the 9th, then we had some school programs that our grandkids were in. We're heading home in the morning, and I think we'll hit up the Coconut Creek jamboree next week with Coconut Creek, Hialeah, Miramar, Norland and McArthur.

Jesuit beats Lakeland, 30-17.

Jesuit also missed an EASY TD in the 3rd quarter when a wide open WR burned the db but dropped an easy TD. Lakeland also missed some opportunities to score, but one gets the impression they just aren't that sharp and/or skilled.

At the moment, Lakeland will not be a threat to do anything of significance this season. They need 4-5 transfers who are > 275 lbs, a competent offensive coordinator, and the return of Malik Morris. As is now, the OL is incredibly anemic looking, the offensive coordination and execution continues to be poor, and the defense is clearly a couple notches down from last year. I have to assume a new OC is not yet present or involved with anything, and that may change over summer. On the first possession of the game, they hit a TD, but it was called back because several OLs were several yards downfield blocking *nobody* on a forward pass. They faced 3rd and 13 and guess what? They took their QB, with several upper level offers to his name, off the field to run wildcat. Reminiscent of the state title game debacle.

At the moment, Lakeland is looking at a running clock loss to MNW, a decisive loss to DLS, a running clock loss to First Academy, and they have no chance vs. Tampa Bay Tech in the playoffs. If they get those 4-5 "big ugly" transfers, a new and competent OC, and Malik Morris back, we'll have to wait and see what happens.

Sad. Coach Castle has to be shaken his head to see a program he ran for 47 years be thrown in the gutter. Lakeland was so lucky they go to play Venice who had a Swiss cheese defense or they wouldn’t have anything to show for anything. The writing was on the wall when returning starters are transferring OUT!

They will be lucky to go 8-4 with all 4 losses being blowouts

They didn't really have any true returning starters transfer out. The QB that went to LW would not have beaten out Kavouklis. And the WR who went to LW, as far as I can tell, struggled to maintain a roster spot.  But, having the two Victory lineman, who would'be been certain starters, go to LG was a bad sign for sure.

It's not over for them yet, certainly not in May lol. But, the handwriting is on the wall. I hope they bring in a new OL coach and coordinator, who also brings in several big guys. I'd hate to see them get embarrassed next season. They have some really nice pieces, but some glaring holes. Sigh...
