I can not emphasize how bad the football is here compared to years past. You just assume being a power state that the football is always good, but that’s not the case. Florida teams mostly are poorly coached, poorly conditioned, and nowhere near the standard that was set years ago.

Florida has outstanding individual talent, but overrated mediocre teams. When you compare the elite teams in Florida to the rest of the country, it’s embarrassing.

If you followed any of the games this weekend and last year you could see it.

it’s a sad time to see Florida so down in the dumps. And remember I’m basing this off the the past and how FL stacks up nationally. It’s not even close

100% of the problem is funding.  The states that have passed us, California, Texas and GA, all invest state/county dollars in football.  I think there are two HUGE problems in FL contributing to this.

  1. Lack of community.  FL is a transient state and literally 99% of the adult population here was born elsewhere.  Hardly anyone has ties to the community they live in and hence, no sense of community and bonding.
  2. Too many schools.  In Pinellas County, for example, you can draw a 5 mile radius circle and hit 10-15 schools.  Most schools in other areas will have no more than 2-3 in the same area.

To get funding, you need the people to want their tax money invested in schools and activities.  Literally nobody cares here and they just want as little taxes as possible, fuck those kids.

Underfunding in Florida has been prevalent for a while.

  1. Subjective.  Yes a lot of people move into and around Florida.  However 99% of the adult population being from somewhere else is extremely high.  I would love to see the statistics.
  2. Teetering the political line, refer back to 2 major events in Florida; The inception of both The Florida Class Size initiative and the School Voucher Program.  There's some of your funding.

Yeah I definitely invented that 99% statistic.  I too would like to see the actual data.  I am a native floridian from Punta Gorda so I counted myself as the 1 out of dozens of people in my neighborhood that I know who were actually born here.  I bet the actual percentage is somewhere above 80%.

As far as the political aspect of this, I will stay away from partisan politics and just focus on the relevant part, funding.  I think the class size initiative was a well-intended program to improve test scores but if it comes at too great a cost that it hurts everyone due to too many pieces of the pie divided up, then it is a failure.   I cannot speak so fondly for the school voucher program because that seems to be more of a religious initiative than something to benefit the general public.  If these private, religious schools need vouchers to survive, then perhaps they should not be open in the first place?  When I was in school 40 years ago, the private schools were few but very strong, self-sufficient funded schools like Cardinal Mooney, Bishop Verot, Jesuit, etc.  Now there are hundreds of private schools.  Besides, all of the private schools jacked up their tuition such that the voucher just keeps it the same cost to parents as before despite a significant offset coming from the government.

In as far as the whole transiet position on the population for florida, I challenge anyone to go back to the 50's and compile data that proves at any point the state population consisted of over 50% born naturally within the state? You're not going to find that, florida probably more than any other state has always been a melting pot particularly on the east and west coastal sides of the state. For myself it's always been the case that I was the exception rather than the rule, of being born and raised in the Tampa Bay area, going back some 60 plus years now.

Growing up when I played youth football, most counties had one county league youth football program, with a flag football program at all Boys Clubs. Take a look at the current state of youth football in Florida, particularly in the merto to mid metro areas of Florida. You wanna know why kids are so prone to moving around, look no further then how youth football programs are operated in these metro and mid-metro areas. Foundations for midsets are being established at these levels everyday with kids, as well as parents (the actual enablers). Lack of quality coaching, is another issue which relates directly to pay and the limits placed on programs to hire and keep good coaches. Saw a list recently that listed over a 100 coaches in Georgia earning over 6 figuers just to coach, find just one public school in Florida where that's the case currently?

All the reasons mentioned are valid points. My question is, if you had the power to,“ What would be your solution?”.  Remember, “if you had the power”.  Feel free to think outside the box.

I would use money that is allotted to public schools to pay coaches what they are worth to coach football. I seen something that said we pay on average of $8,000-$10,000 per student to attend public school as taxpayers. That could be upwards of $20 million for a school of 2,000.

you could get rid of useless subjects in school and save money on teachers salaries for those useless classes.

you could easily get rid of one teacher per school and pay that salary to a football coach. The amount of useless electives in public schools is staggering. It would take five minutes looking at a class list to be able to ax one elective.

OK just checked. It took about 120 seconds I looked up my local high schools class list.

There is Ceramics I and Ceramics II

WHY IS THERE TWO DIFFERENT CERAMICS CLASSES???????????

also, there is theater 1, theater 2, and theater 3. why does a school need three completely different classes for freaking theater?? How many job openings are there in the workforce that we need to prep kids in 3 stages of theater? LMAO!!!!!!

They can offer one ceramics class, and merge the 3 theater classes into 2.

and that was just taking 2 minutes only looking at the fine arts

Solutions here dont require thinking outside the box.

I just noticed another out of state score:  Auburn (AL) 24 - Booker 6

FL takes it on the chin again but it's an unranked FL school vs a highly ranked Alabama school

Florida is not ready for prime time. It’s astounding how many Florida teams will sign up for ass whoopings outside the state. And the worst part is the outcome is already decided before the game is played. So these punk coaches are putting their players in impossible situations and forcing them to bear the embarrassment of getting their head beat in for 4 quarters. For what? So you can say you visited some different buildings in a different state? It’s dumb as hell.

But it makes for a good sales pitch during the off-season recruiting, er, attraction, period.   B)

I asked a very connected member of the Manatee football booster organization "why" after the Saint John's game was announced. The 1st response i got tried relating it to the "Tunnels for Towers" affiliation. When I mentioned just how good a very young St John's team was last year and the probability of it being a contender for a national championship this year, in addition to Manatee losing all of its studs on defense in addition to all of its skilled players.....I just couldn't see how any reasonable thinking person would think scheduling that game was reasonable? Was very fortunate the rain gods saw fit to sprinkle a bit of thunder and lighting at half, to stop the game before a full fledged massacre was allowed to happen the second half.

I have my thoughts on why the game was allowed to be, but ill keep them to myself.

Come play for us so you too can see some bowling alley in the middle of nowhere Georgia before you lose by 50 and remember it for the rest of your life? :P

C'mon, Nolebull, you know darn well that's not how the sales call would be scripted.  :D

OK, somewhat serious question related to this topic:   Lakeland is headed out to California to play De La Salle Friday night. I think most pundits would agree that this is a relatively down year for the Dreadnaughts and De La Salle may not be a Top 10 team, but they're in the Top 40 (nationwide).   With that in mind, how many players on the Lakeland roster will be traveling out of state for the first time or taking their first trip on an airplane?  Is that experience worth a beat-down?

No it’s not worth a beatdown. If you haven’t flown in a plane before you are gonna be a nervous wreck. It’s not fun to fly in a plane and it’s definitely not fun flying for 6 plus hours.

What else are they gonna do? Go see the Golden Gate Bridge? Some crap on the road? Some homeless man in an argument with himself?

They are gonna remember forever having their skirts lifted and embarrassed up and down the field. It will be the first thing that comes to their mind for the rest of the life when talking or thinking about this experience

Since funding is such a major problem for all of the public schools in FL (fuck that voucher program), perhaps everyone is taking these beatings for funds?  That seems like a reasonable choice in that case.

What’s the voucher program? Is that where parents who can’t afford private school can take the taxpayer funds allotted for their kid and put it towards tuition?

Speaking of not ready for prime time, Spruce Creek ranked 91st in Florida according to the computers is playing Avon OH who went 16-0 last year, finished top 25 in the country, and obliterated 11 time state champion St Ignatius last week worst than they did last year.

This will be a wasted blowout. Worst part is this Avon OH team searched out the worst team that would agree to play and Spruce Creek jumped up to be the sacrificial lamb.

Spruce Creek is a nice team.  Saw them in spring and they are not to far from being a very good team.  That being said it is obviously not a good matchup for Florida.  I can understand why Spruce Creek took the opportunity to play the game.

I don’t think you’re lying, but I don’t believe one word you typed other than you saw them in the spring. And it’s not a good matchup for FL Lol.

I don’t think they have ever been a “very good” team in the history of their program. And I believe they took the game because the head coach is one of many in FL who take ass whoopings like there going out of business.

I completely support challenging your team, but when you schedule games that are already decisively decided before kickoff, I think it’s a waste

Posted

There were about 20-25 games against out of state teams that were already decided before the game started. What’s crazy is no other state in the country does this. Signs up for embarrassing ass whippings against out of state teams. It’s crazy

Based on the visual of the number of fannies in the seats for the Manatee vs St John's game.....ticket revenue had nothing to do with scheduling that game. Can't imagine St John's came all the way from CA, to play for just a half on its own dime? I believe those tossing money around in the west Bradenton area, had visions of grandeur about Manatee's talent base as well as its head coach Jaquez Green to think this team had a fighting chance, as well as the potential marketing PR for luring talent future talent to the school....never considering what a possible ass whipping compounded with other season loses might do to the whole team phyc long term.

    • Never said that or implied it. Just stating from the broadcast. The angle and view that was being shown there was no clear cut infraction on the following 2 punt attempts. And what made it more confusing was that the commentators basically implied the exact same logic
    • "Did you say my name?" (Sorry, I think I've seen that new John Daly/Hard Rock commercial one too many times.)
    • You can make an argument that the Metro /Suburban years were very comparable.  I may be a prisoner of the moment by saying they were the best.  One of my favorite board names is @imjustafan2 because I get into the X’s and the O’s but really I enjoy the whole experience of a high school game.   I really enjoyed the Cardinal Mooney game for reasons I included in my post.  I anticipated Bolles would make a strong comeback but it never materialized. Cardinal Newman upsets Chaminade.  That game wasn’t decided until it ended.     STA took it easy on Lakeland.  Awful game.   West Boca Raton destroys West Broward.  Pretty highly anticipated but was a dud. Raines with the upset of the year.     AHP/Jones game was competitive until late.  Jones made an entertaining comeback only to be squelched in the 4th quarter. Lake Mary/Vero Beach.  Say no more. So from my perspective it was at least one of the best.  I remember many years where you had maybe one competitive game.  If you were lucky you had 2.     From my viewpoint there were 2 historic upsets, the final game ended in a viral play that’s been shared all over the world, a game that was competitive until the 4th quarter, Cardinal Mooney (Sarasota team) and 2 games that were no contests.  So for me but not for others it was a great finals.
    • Appreciate the breakdown by game, I would also like to read your thoughts on the venue. It was about as far south in the state that could hold the event, how was the turnout, how well did they manage the games, perking, ease of entry, concessions? What did you do between games? I have been to several final games in Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale and thought the year I went to games in Ft. Lauderdale were run better.
    • MarkECannon, do you think the reason why Cardinal Mooney was able to pass the ball and find open receivers very effectively against the Bolles defense was because the line of scrimmage was dominant, and they were able to protect the passer and give him time to scan the field? Do you think that Lakeland needs to get more of a balanced offense to compete at the State Championship level? Thank you.
