Robinson is scary bad. Lost to a REALLY bad Southeast 42-0.

So basically Robinson is a JV team. The level of football for about 200 teams in Florida resembles junior varsity football.

High school sports has gotta be the only thing that you can be a bad as it possibly can be in that craft, and fail spectacularly for years, yet continue to perform in said craft. SMH

Was Plant throwing it in the second half? Also if the 3rd and 4th running back were running up the middle for scores they can’t help it. Can’t tell a kid who otherwise never plays to fall on the ground of dive before contact

Why? As in....

* Why was this scheduled?

* Why was it 78-7?

We watched Fort Pierce Central eviscerate Hollywood Hills 76-6 on Thursday night.

* Why was it scheduled? It's my understanding that both teams were in desperate need of a game, and this was a late addition.

* Why was it 77-6? FPC had three pick sixes, and a scoop and score. I suppose my question is how a 5A program could be that bad? I counted 38 players on the team, but some of those kids looked like they hadn't played much, if any organized football before.

I think he asking why did Plant dismantle Robinson like that and not call the dogs off.

My answer is it’s not Plant’s responsibility to call the dogs off and switch the entire game plan to appease some team who obviously shouldn’t be playing varsity football.

i wish there was 8 man for public schools. We have about 150-200 teams in this state that would be better suited for it

no, you’re missing the mark. As a leader of young men, part of your responsibility is to distill qualities that will help them in life. One of those is compassion. When you’re up by a ridiculous amount of points, you do not need to pile on. Now if this is a playoff game or some statement game against a highly ranked rival that’s another thing. This is not that. This is beating up on your downtrodden neighbor. And Robinson has played plant close just two years ago. 21 to 14. But that coach left for USC. And the program basically got decimated when all the good players went elsewhere. The new staff, if they are able to keep it together, will be fine. This will be a moment they can look back at if they stick together and build on it. But still, the other side should just run the ball up the middle when you’re up by 60 points. I understand that you want the back ups to get reps. But there’s a point when even that is unnecessary.

I get that. Compassion is key. Even if the coaches have issues you don’t take it on kids who have no part in the quarrel.

Sounds like there needs to be another mercy rule. The game gets called when a team is up by 55. What do you think about that?

The current Plant head coach is the protege of the former head coach who won 4 state titles during his tenure at Plant.  That coach had a philosophy that you put the petal to the metal the entire first half.  And then, after halftime, you bring the starters back out for the first series of the second half (I'm guessing so that they got used to playing after a halftime break).  After that, if the game was in hand, and especially if the clock was running, you pull your starters, substitute freely and get playing time to all the kids who are out there every week grinding it out.  It sounds to me that the current coach is of the same philosophy.

I wasn't at the game, but I took a look at the MaxPreps boxscore.  Plant and Robinson are longtime rivals, though it has been several years since Robinson has beaten Plant.  But, as 181pl points out, the game has been competitive in the recent years.  Clearly that was not the case this year.  Plant put up 36 points in the first quarter and 28 more in the second quarter.  They scored on running plays, passing plays and punt returns.  Robinson added a passing TD of their own just before halftime.  So, the halftime score was 64-7.

In the second half, with the clock running, Plant added one TD on a punt return and a second TD after a turnover with a short pass to make the final score 78-7.  So, it appears the 'concern' being raised is with Plant throwing the ball in the second half instead of just running the ball up the middle.   Hey, I get the argument and I understand the "compassion" element.  But I've often said the worst position a high school player can be in is to be non-starting receiver.  Because, by the time you finally get in the game, the game is out of reach, the clock is running and chances are your team will be running the ball up the middle and you'll never have the chance to do what you train for all summer and every day at practice (i.e., run a route and catch a ball thrown to you).  Same for the QB3.

In this particular case, based on a couple of SM posts that I've seen, the TD in the second half was thrown by a third-string QB to a back-up WR.   There's a very good chance that this might be the only TD pass this QB ever throws in high school and the only TD catch the receiver ever catches.  Probably not a bad thing that kids who bust their butts doing 7-on-7's all summer, and who wake up early to practice all spring and fall, get the slightest taste of glory.

Again, I wasn't at the game and I'm not here to defend anyone . . . just wanted to point out that there is 'another side to the story.'

Posts on fb said they were throwing the ball up 70. I was going to go but the lightning delay was too long and the NFHS feed was down.  Had to follow through scorestream and social media.

This mentality fails the lower level you go in football.  In the NFL, there is no mercy.  In college football, you start to see physical mismatches (upper division vs lower division) and mercy starts coming into play.  Once the score gets out of hand, you play backups in the second half.  You can throw, but with your backups.  No trick plays, just straight up get your backups some good work in.  If they score, they score.

Now drop down into HS level and you can really get some bad physical mismatches.  In this case, where it's a high-level program vs a down-trodden JV team that's playing varsity ball, please have mercy, if not for anything else then for player safety.  As someone else said, sometimes you get a bunch of scoop and scores when the game is already out of hand.  I get that and it happens.  However, I've seen Pinellas teams throw bombs to score at the buzzer when they were already up by 50.  I questioned the coach afterwards and he angrily responded "its just football bro."  I mean come on dude, you may come out of the hood where life is tough, but these are still young men we are teaching lessons.  Do you want to teach them to kick someone while they are down or to extend a hand and help them off the ground?  I'd rather teach the latter.  There's not enough love and compassion in this world.

South Lake did just that this week. We were up 61-0 at half. We scored 41 points in 6 minutes and 30 seconds. Included a pick 6 and 2 blocked / muffed punts resulting in TD's. We pulled all of our offensive starters except for a few linemen. We played backup QB and RB's, did not pass with the backups. Finished the game 61-0. We all have been on the other side of this at some point, if you have been in the business long enough.

It sounds like I’m making fun but I believe teams like Davenport should be playing JV teams, very small church privates, or go 8-man. They need a public school 8 man league

Davenport under Coach George was on a up kick, they beat me at Poinciana. It was a dirty game and I feel the officials aided it. But that is neither here nor there. The current head coach has built programs. I dont know how his player buy in is.  In my opinion they will not be the worst team we play this year in our district.

I got fired because I wanted to take Poinciana to the SSAA for a 2 year cycle, then hopefully move back to FHSAA if it made sense.

That would have been perfect. Sometimes the people in charge don’t understand a certain type of culture. Just because someone is in a position of power doesn’t mean they deserve to be there or have the best interest interests for what they are responsible for. This sounds like the case at Poinciana.

Do you think horizon is worse than a team that you were on pace to beat 122–0? Lol.
