Is #17 Spruce Creek the same team that was "not in the state top 100" three weeks ago?  That's quite a jump.

The lack of context is breathtaking.

Also they earned their spot with results on the field that happened in the last 3 weeks. Beating Avon Ohio who is top 10 in OH and Mainland who is top 25 in FL solidified their spot in the rankings. They earned it.

And that ranking you cite is a preseason ranking that a computer gave them. It was the only ranking on file at the time that goes that far in depth in a state ranking.

My only regret is not asking you to give me the heads up and let me know that they would be 4-0 by now so I could have had them in earlier B)

Creek also had the refs who gave them so many fcking calls to keep their drives going. Sure, Mainland missed an extra point and that made them have to go for a TD instead of getting a tie with a field goal but like 17 penalties compared to like 4 is fcking wild.

The context is you were using Spruce Creek as an example of a lowly Florida team that was clearly overmatched against an out-of-state team which they had no business playing.  Oops.  Several others in that thread actually stated they had a solid/nice/well-coached team as well.  But credit for giving them the ranking they deserve at this point in the season.  As for preseason rankings, you don't know what you don't know.

I watched the game. Spruce Creek was very poorly coached. They had two separate coaches get flagged for 15 yard penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct. They probably had about 20 penalties in that game. In fact, Avon played so bad that spruce Creek did everything in their power to let Avon win and they still screwed it. Spruce Creek had some nice skilled guys, but other than that, they lacked coaching, discipline, and mental toughness.

But a win is a win. And beating mainland proved it wasn’t a fluke.

Also coming into the season, Avon, Ohio finished as the number one team in the state and top 25 nationally. Spruce Creek lost 4 games with 2 being blowouts so bad that the opponent probably could’ve gotten a more competitive game against their own junior varsity team.

So yes, on paper it did appear to be a complete mismatch.

    • Yeah in the 70’s-90’s the debate will most likely be between the top 2 largest class state champs
    • 1976 - Godby HS went 14-0, defeated ledgendary Gene Cox, Leon Lions for the 1st time in school history in its last game of the regular season. Beat a Carol City Team, (that would come back the next year to win the 1977 state title), 21-15 in Lakeland, FL for the 1976 4A title. Two members of that Godby team (Sammy Knight, Chris Hobbs) would then lead FAMU to a upset win over the University of Miami. 1978 - Meritt Island - Beat Carl Madison coached (going to see the name Carl Madison alot through out the 80's),Pine Forrest for the 4A state Title 20-16 and would go on to be repeat state champs winning the 1979 state 4A state title as well, seeing Pine Forrest once again in the Finals 1979 - Merritt Island - Beat Pine Forrest 19-14 1980 - Argument could be made that 3A state Champ Gainesville HS was the states best, as they defeated Titusville on Titusville's home field 21-15, but in the end Carl Madison's (who we'll talk about again in the 80's), Tate HS has to be considered the state best destorying Miami Columbus HS 35-7! 1981 - Again 3A would again have to be where the state's best team played. Palatka after struggling in its 1st round game went on to dominate evenutally winning the state title 42-2 over Suncoast. Unlike Vero Beach (which won the 4A state itle that year), Palatka was loaded with star power, with 2 of its players eventually playing in the NFL (John L Williams, and Jarvis Williams) 1982 - Going 3A once again as Titusville would shutout 3 of its 4 playoff opponents, winning the state title over Osceola 33-0 1983 - 4A Manatee High School goes 14-0 for its 1st state title and the beginning of a dynasty through out the 80's and into the early 90's   more later.......
