Vanguard 49 - Countryside 7

42 - 0 at the half. 470 total yards for Vanguard. 344 on the ground. Sophomore Trevonte Rucker was at QB.

Of course I always take Spring Games with a grain of salt. However, hopefully this may be the real Vanguard when the season starts.

Unfortunately, I was not able to make the game due to another commitment on Thursday. :(

Went to Oviedo High and got the benefit of two games for the price of one. In the first game, which featured Varsity starters for all four quarters, Lyman High defeated Hagerty High by a final score of 35-28. The game was entertaining and, with the exception of the third quarter which was scoreless, was dominated by the offenses of both teams. Lyman's QB is a nice athlete to watch. He probably won't play QB in college. However, he was elusive and fast, and was a thorn in the side of the Hagerty defense. He took one keeper 75 yards making at least four defenders miss along the way for a score early in the 4th quarter.

In the second game, which was the one I made the trip to see mostly because I wanted to see how much progress Seminole's freshman QB had made, Seminole came out on top 14-0. Varsity played the 1st, 2nd and 4th quarters while the 3rd quarter was played by the JV teams. This enabled the game to be continuous without the usual half time break. The Varsity portion of this game was dominated by the defenses of both teams. McClain, Seminole's QB was hurried most of the night and was not able to make the pinpoint passes I was used to seeing from him. However, he did account for both touchdowns in the air. He has also filled out his body quite a bit which is good as he was real skinny last season.

My expectations going into the game, were for Seminole to be a live threat for the 8A title this season. This is based on the fact that last year the team was very young, being sophomore and freshman heavy. This year they will still be relatively young, but with experience. If they are going to fulfill my expectations, they will need to improve the play of their offensive line which had problems with Oveido's front four and linebacker corps all night. Regardless, my expectations of Seminole have not changed. They have a good coaching staff whom I expect to address any shortcomings early on.

Haven't seen much on this forum, in my area of north central Florida, and of the relevant spring games. So thought I'd preview two that I'm interested in and to let other folks know what's happening other than in south Florida. Marion County, just south of the University of Florida, is a great HS football area and we have had teams that have been in championship games or that otherwise have been very good in their own right. Although I enjoy previewing these teams, Spring Games IMO are nothing more than glorified scrimmages that allow coaches to assess all formations, plays, and players. As such, I don't put any trust in who wins or loses a Spring game. Over the course of a season it doesn't matter a whit.

May 17th

7A Countryside @ 6A Vanguard

Countryside is usually one of the better 7A teams.

6-4 last season

For 2018 they will be Senior Laden.

They lost their starting QB to graduation

Will have all RB's back

Lost 3 productive WR's to graduation

Defense lost their most productive LB and FS to graduation

Vanguard is always one of the better teams in 6A

11-1 last season

For 2018 lost many Seniors to graduation

They lost their starting QB to graduation

Lost 3 productive RB's to graduation

Lost only 1 productive WR to graduation

Defense lost 3 most productive players to graduation

May 18th

2A North Florida Christian @ 3A Trinity Catholic

NFC is always one of the better teams in 2A

8-3 last season

Will be a Senior laden team

QB returns for 2018

All but 1 RB returns

All but 1 WR returns

Defense lost 3 productive players to graduation

Trinity Catholic over it's history, with the exception of the last 3 years, has always been one of the best teams in 3A

6-3 last season

Lost many Seniors to graduation

QB returns

All but 2 RB's return

Most WR's return

Defense lost a bundle to graduation

New HC Andrew Thomas takes over the reins for 2018. Took Trenton to the the championship 6 times winning 2. He will undoubtedly revise some things that former HC Sturdivant instituted at Trinity.

I have no predictions as I am not really interested in who wins or loses. When I attend these games, from the stands I will be assessing overall play, execution, formations, cohesion, and physical fitness that will carry forth over the summer and into the season.

Went out to the NFC/Trinity game last night a few minutes before kickoff. Waited about 20 minutes in a torrential downpour with lightning. The type of downpour where there is no way you are getting out of your car. Didn't see any NFC buses and am assuming that the game was cancelled. Didn't see anything today in the Ocala Star Banner so I'm quite sure it was cancelled. Will wait to hear if it will be rescheduled.
