And they the only team with two state final appearance

Fort Pierce Central finished the 1971 season 13-0 and won the 4A title in front of a home crowd at Lawnwood Stadium.  Central defeated Tampa Robinson 29-13 behind 3 TD passes from qb Cleaver Hayling to Mike Latimer.  That Central team was coached by Calvin Triplett.  The year before, his first at Central, he took them to the title game versus Miami Edison.  It was the second of 3 state titles he would win in his career.  He led McComb High of Mississippi to a state title in 1956 and his hometown Picayune Memorial of MS to a state title in 1986.  Triplett retired with 235 career coaching wins.  He died in 2001.  The field at Lawnwood Stadium was named in his honor.

I played at Bethune-Cookman in 1974. Randy tore his knee up the year before in a blow out victory at the old Memorial Stadium in Daytona Beach (now a Daytona State parking lot). Jackson State's Walter "Sweetness" Payton and B-CC's Randy "Sweetback" Walker had battled each other in the Orange Blossom Classic in 1972. In 1974 the two teams played in a much hyped contest in Tampa's old "sombrero shaped" stadium. TV promo's flooded Tampa area stations on the game build up. It was focused on the battle between Walter and Randy the two top running backs in all of black college football. It was only hype to sell tickets. Neither played a down. Randy never played the 1974 season. The knee injury and other factors doomed his senior year. And Walter injured, but suited up, never left the sideline. He mostly stood on the bench watching the action. His backup Ricky Young had a long successful career in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings.... (For the youngsters)  In the late 1960's and early '70's the word "sweet" was used as a compliment. Like saying something is smooth, cool, special. Both Walter and Randy were both smooth, cool, and special. Randy's "Sweetback" came from the movie "Sweet Sweetback's Bad Ass Song."  Walter "Sweetness", like Randy, it came from their running style.

Back in 1970, Fort Pierce had a population of about 30,000.  It was all orange groves.  It was a time when a somewhat rural school could win a "big school" championship.  Fort Pierce won 4A and Glades Central won 3A.  Few teams made the playoffs back then, so the playoff paths were typically very tough.  "Easy" playoff games and blowouts were rare.  Central beat Miami Norland 14-13 in the state semi that year.

The cyclical nature of football in Ft. Pierce is pretty amazing. Like clockwork, the talent shifts in that town. Right now, Westwood has the dudes.

It's funny, I could see some folks talking about doing away with the rivalry after 6 straight years of shutout blowouts, and then...

As I am learning, the same thing has happened in many of these rivalries around the state, the only difference being how long it takes for a "flip" to occur.  Sometimes it can take 20 years.  Every dog has his day.
