Venice wins the game, 28-21, in a nail biter that came down to the last seconds. Here are some key takeaways from the game:

1. This is the 6th straight time Venice has beaten Braden River and the third straight year they have knocked them out of the playoffs.

2. Brian Battie, Braden River’s runningback, was limited to 57 yards on 25 carries. He had over 2,000 yards overall on the season.

3. Venice scored 21 first quarter points and held Braden River to only 7 points in the first half

Any thoughts on this? We play Bloomingdale next week.

Venice seems very tempo-dependent. As with most all of these teams, early in games before defenses fully adapt, is when they will be most dangerous. Later, they may wane. If someone can disrupt them early, get a couple stops and scores themselves, I think Venice could be in trouble. Easier said than done. But, either Venice gets off to a GREAT start and gets up 14-21 pts on STA OR they get running-clocked.

Maybe. Venice loves to control the tempo but I think we can match STA

Bigger question is who is Bloomindale and what do they do well. Don't know much about them other than OT #77 is a big man. My guess is they will like to run to that side. The OG is pretty big as well.

Bloomingdale is from Valrico and they have a good runningback that likes to work the sideline. They aren’t a very pass heavy team.

Personally I don’t think Bloomingdale is a threat to us, STA is the only team we have to worry about and I still think we’ll beat them handily

Ok Ill bite.

Handle STA.

Tell me the points in which you will handle STA at their house. Give me something that you base this from other than being just a fan.

While I hope they can I doubt beat them handily is something that will happen.

Don't get me wrong I pull for Venice but realize what task it takes to pull it off.

They can’t dominate the line of scrimmage like they have in the past. Their o-line just doesn’t have the muscle that it used to.

Their secondary is not as tough as you might think- against Miami Central, STA got torched against not only hot running backs but also good receivers. A competent passing game along with a fantastic ability to run the ball might catch them off guard. Being creative with pass plays and doing catch-and-runs is the way to beat STA’s defense. Venice also dominates the LOS this year like they have in the past.

Shutting down their offense is going to be another matter. In order to shut down their offense, you need to pressure the quarterback consistently because they have an efficient passing game. Having a quarterback spy along with keeping 7 men in the box, 2 cornerbacks, and 2 guys deep in the secondary will ensure that they can’t pass- without problems of course. And it will also severely disable their running game.

All in all I think Venice can do this to STA this year. I’ve seen them play almost perfectly before, and I think they can do it again, beat STA on the road, and win states again.

I can applaud the confidence you type with. I can also hope that would be the case but still have this game on Friday to deal with first.

I'm not so sure I agree with some of your statement's. I am guessing you are comparing the RB and WR from Central to Gregory and Wolff ? While Brandon is a good runner he is not the home run hitter that STA usually sees. If they hand the ball off 20 times to him they will figure it out. No disrespect just facts that STA will have a ton of team speed. If STA feels Wolff will be the biggest threat they will play a safety over the top with a press corner. I am not sure Weston can over come that like Heiligh did last year.

On the other side for defense I am sure STA will have watched the Vero film and mimic a lot of what they exploited. If they are a good staff will add plays to kill the Venice DBs. Again just facts.

Here is what Venice will need to do. Have coach Mac put in some plays specifically to beat the STA defense. Get pressure on the QB without overcommitting and staying in their lanes. Rushing up field without discipline will create huge holes.

Win the special teams battle with FG or field position. Punter could make or break it. Offensively need to keep pace early. Without the senior heavy leadership going down early could spell the end.

With that said Dwyer could provide a lot of helpful info but matchups player for player will not favor Venice.

What Venice does do well is play together as a team. Do more with less.

Lets see what happens this Friday or all of this is for not. ^^^^^^^^^^^^

Hell Venice didn't dominate the line of scrimmage last year with just its OL when they played STA, and last year's OL was a outstanding group! Peacock went almost the entire game imploying a jumbo package utilizing his starting defensive linemen, running it between the tackles 65 times with Carpenter and Gregory for just 231 yards ( that's a 3.5 yards per carry average). Venice this year doesn't have the luxury of a QB that can carry the ball 43 times like Carpenter did against STA, nor do they have the kind of personnel they had last year to go jumbo the entire game. STA shut down Heiligh last year, playing a tight press coverage, as it was he caught 5 of the 6 total completions Venice had of their 13 total passing attempts that night. Venice has no one anywhere close talent wise to Heiligh this year. My feeling is what you saw when STA played Dematha this year, is probably what STA will do to Venice this year. Venice needs to get past a Bloomingdale squad however that will challenge Venice's offense, before they start thinking about STA.

To add Javion did not have that many catches but STA basically said he will not beat us. They had a few PI penalties that kept the drive alive. PI do whatever but don't let him beat you was what I got out of it.

So (mainly) Carpenter ran the ball. He did the most damage with Gregory adding in. The high tempo had STA defense gassed in the end which helped.

    • Okay, how about that STA vs. Ida Baker matchup in your first round?  Does your analogy extend to South Florida slappies?  My opinion is simply that no one (except CoachGraham, apparently) would be interested in the 1 vs. 512, 2 vs. 511, and 200 other mismatches such a format would produce, regardless of geography.  But I could be wrong.  And now I'm thinking I should have skipped college.
    • Complaining about North Florida slappies losing to South Florida powers is like someone graduating high school complaining that companies are only hiring college graduates and not them. And then a company saying ok to make it fair, we will open division and only hire high school graduates.
    • First I want to express my apologies for my absence the last few months. Without going into much detail I have had some personal life struggles I have been dealing with on top of figuring out the direction to take FloridaHSFootball.com in. Things have finally settled out some over the last few weeks although I am not completely out of the woods just yet. Some of the decisions about what direction to take FloridaHSFootball.com have been forming over this time while I went through things. Part of me wondered if it was time to go, but really it is not at all. Thankfully, a loyal supporter near me in Gainesville decided to put their mouth where their money is and did a little investing and today FloridaHSFootball.com launched its first-ever Mobile App. With that said it comes with the sunset of the MVP Membership Subscriptions and thus FloridaHSFootball.com will be 100% free for the first time in a while. This comes as needing to get the clearances with Apple and Google and the current subscription platform we have is not syncing with Apple's system nor with the App itself. Its best we go in this direction to grow fans again and being able to put them facing forward with an app on their phone going forward. Here are the download links for the apps: iOS (Apple): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/floridahsfootball-com/id6477621728 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floridahsfootball.app&hl=en_US&gl=US   For now the forums will not be available directly in the app. At some point I maybe looking at changing the whole forum software that could eventually integrate into the app. It will be a while before this happens so things will go on as they are here.   I also apologize for any of the spam and troll accounts that have managed to find their way around the security protocols in setting up new accounts. It seems every day these things find ways to pass through control systems. I am going to be looking at getting this solved and will keep an eye on things here as we go along.   Please feel free to reach out to me if you all need anything, want to chat or have any suggestions.   -- Josh
