Why did Coach Weiner do this?

I mentioned this before but it still bothers me,  Plant had just scored a TD and trailed Lakeland by 19 with 2:59 to play. They successfully recover an onside kick, but eventually they face 4th and 15 at their own 45 with about 2:25 remaining. And they PUNT! ?   Why?  I admit the odds were long but if you go to the effort to recover an onsides kick why punt? The odds favored the 4th and 15 more than the onsides kick. And they had already completed a 4th and long in the last drive. Why?

What was the score at that point?

Playbook for 4th and 15 are not jumping off the sheet.

I wondered the same. I would’ve bet money he fights to the end, especially with the success they were having with the long bomb throws. Seems he was waiving the white flag. Very odd to me.

Our HC did the same thing, he punted with 3 mins approx to go in the game. But he had confidence the defense would stop the opponent and they did. But that hurt them in the end as time was running out and they were rushing on every single down. I agree some of these HCs do not think about it but we cannot blame them they have only seconds to make that decision.

Also worth mentioning that, in HS and sometimes even college, players often HATE returning punts...but coaches demand that they do. Often out of stupidity, maybe "toxic masculinity" lol. LOTS of muffed punts at this level. Kids seeming to think a punt is the same as a kickoff and they HAVE to be the hero and field the punt, depsite often difficult, dangerous circumstances. Thankfully Lakeland went without a returner there.
