Answer #1 is h. Frostproof

At the 1999 2A final in Gainesville, unranked Frostproof, a team that was 6-4 during the regular season, shocked Jacksonville Trinity Christian in a 6-0 win.  Trinity had scored 689 points during the year and, at that time, was the highest-scoring team in Florida high school football history.

For the game's only score, Frostproof hit a 59-yard crossing pattern for a TD 5 minutes into the game.  Take away that and Frostproof had minus-2 yards of offense.  Frostproof set title-game records with negative-7 yards rushing and one first down, and tied a mark with eight punts.  Frostproof's C.J. Hudson, one of Florida's all-time leading rushers with over 7000 yards, was held to 16 yards on 14 carries.

On defense, Frostproof had 13 stops for negative yardage and held Trinity to an average of 3.3 yards per play.  Trinity didn't help themselves, fumbling 7 times, which tied a title game record.

Frostproof was coached by Bill Pierstoff and Trinity was coached by Verlon Dorminey.  That game was Frostproof's last appearance in a title game.  Dorminey would have to wait a few more years to win the first of many state titles.

#11. g Fort Meade

Answer #11 is g. Fort Meade

No team has had such bad luck in the state finals as the Miners, who have won only 1 title in 9 tries.  And it took them 7 tries before getting that 1 title.  That title was a 42-38 win over Blountstown in the 2004 Class 1A finals.

7 of their 8 losses came at the hands of teams from the Panhandle, including four losses to North Fl Christian.  At one point, they lost the Class A title 3 three years in a row to North FL Christian.

Although their luck in title games has been bad, they have had great overall success in the playoffs, winning 49 games.  Only 13 teams in all classes have won more playoffs games.

Answer #9 is c. Bradenton Southeast

In 1993, a fifith round of the playoffs was added.  Bradenton Southeast, led by Coach Paul Maechtle and Peter Warrick, had a 29-1 record in Peter Warrick's junior and senior seasons, with Warrick scoring 27 touchdowns in the 27 games he played. Southeast’s lone loss, to Riverview in 1994, came with Warrick out of action.  In 1993, Warrick’s junior year, Southeast became the first team in Florida prep history to finish a season with a 15-0 record, en route to the Class 4A state title, an accomplishment that would be matched by Jacksonville Bolles one day later.  Southeast beat Jefferson, Baron Collier and Deerfield Beach on the way to the state finals in Daytona Beach, where they defeated Panama City Bay 20-17.  In 1994, with Warrick at quarterback, Southeast repeated as state champion, rolling up a 14-1 record, finished with a 19-17 state final victory over Ocala Vanguard, led by future NFL quarterback Daunte Culpepper.  Warrick also led Southeast to an undefeated 35-0 basketball season that year, capped with the Class 5A state championship.

Answer #3 is b. Bartow

Bartow beat Bolles 14-13 in the 1996 Class 4A title game.  Bartow's program took a hard dive after that win.

Bartow's coach, Danny Rea Smith, had coached previously at St Cloud and was one of only 4 coaches to beat Corky Rogers in a state title game(Ice Harris/BTW, Joe Zaccheo/Miami Pace, John Wilkinson/Cocoa are the others).

Bolles had won titles in 1990, 1993 and 1995.  Coming into that game, they had a 27-game winning streak, were ranked #1 by USA Today, and had 9 D1 commits, including Chris Reier at qb(who later played for Alabama).

Answer #4 is n. Miami Jackson

Talk about bad luck!  Jackson's four state semi losses, all squeakers:

1969 Brandon 7-6

1998 Northwestern 15-14 Read about it below..maybe the most famous comeback in Dade County history

2000 Dillard 6-0

2012 Immokalee 29-21

Soul Bowl #2

In 1998, #1 ranked Northwestern met Jackson in the state semis in a game known as Soul Bowl 2.  Over 35,000 attended.  Down 14-2 with 2.5 minutes left, NW hit a bomb to bring the score to 14-9. NW did not recover the onside kick and with no timeouts left, the game was virtually over. After three plays, Jackson had the ball on their 24 yard line with 10 seconds left.  Jackson's coach called for his punter to turn tail and dash for his own end zone to give NW a safety.  Instead of inserting his punter, who had already fumbled once in the end zone, he called on the sure hands of his back-up quarterback. Junior Ronnie Jones lined up ten yards behind center and waited for the ball to fly into his hands.  He didn't wait long enough. Jones, who was in for his first play of the game, began to run toward the end zone even before the ball reached his hands. The ball fell to the ground, where it was swarmed by players from both teams. When the pile was unknotted, Northwestern owned the ball on the ten-yard line -- with six seconds left to play.  Now the game rested on one final play. Northwestern's offense lined up in a tight formation. Quarterback Sheffield took the snap, stepped back two feet, planted his cleats in the turf, and lobbed a blimp toward the south corner of the end zone. Northwestern receiver Antonio Bryant raced to meet the ball while jockeying for position with two Jackson cornerbacks. Bryant, taller than both his foes, was also savvy enough to stop suddenly and position himself in front of them. The ball landed in his outstretched hands as he fell to the ground.  Bulls 15-14. NW went on to win the state title.

Answer #7 is p. Miami Northwestern

and now da BULLS have 3 state title game shutouts after beating Armwood 22-0 this year.  Shutouts in state finals are relatively rare.  For example, there have only been 13 in the past 20 years... and Northwestern has 3 of them.  No other team has more than one state final shutout, so this is quite an accomplishment.  Northwestern's other two shutouts were....

2007 41-0 vs Orlando Boone

1998 28-0 vs Bradenton Southeast

Answer #8 is t. Crawfordville Wakulla

Crawfordville Wakulla won the Class 2A state title in 1981 (the second of back-to-back state titles) in one of the most dominant playoff runs ever in FHSAA history.  They were coached by JD Jones, who won 219 games in 29 seasons (1977-2005) at Wakulla.  He was one of the most winning coaches ever in the Panhandle, and the school's stadium is named after him.

There were only 4 classes then.  In 4 playoff games, they outscored their opponents 118-14.  They beat Clewiston in the state finals...the first of a number of trips by Clewiston to the finals.

District Playoffs: Wakulla 22, Jefferson County (Monticello) 14

Regional Playoffs: Wakulla 34, Graceville 0

Sectional Playoffs(equivalent of state semifinals): Wakulla 38, Bolles 0

Championship: Wakulla 24, Clewiston 0.

Answer #14 is r. Port St Joe

The Port St Joe Sharks have won 2 playoff games in which they scored 3 points or less.  In 2005, #2 ranked, 10-1 PSJ visited Mayo, FL, and took on #4 ranked Lafayette.  PSJ escaped with a 3-2 victory.  They eventually won the title against Fort Meade.

In the second-lowest scoring playoff game in FHSAA history, Port St Joe traveled to Chieflland for the 2003 1A Region 1 final.  This was PSJ's third straight playoff game on the road, and it was played on a chilly and windy night.

Late in the second quarter, Shark running back Randall Johnson exploded for an 81-yard run down to the Indian 5-yard line. As it did the entire game, the Chiefland defense held tough and stuffed the Sharks on four straight plays, taking over at the 5. Two plays later, Richard Collins fumbled the handoff from Cortez Gent, sending the ball into the end zone, and Gent fell on it for a safety with six seconds remaining.

The Indians’ offense squandered every opportunity the defense gave them. In the first half, the offense lost two fumbles and botched a fake punt. Each time, the defense bailed the Indians out after a mistake, the PSJ defense responded with a stand of its own.

A punt by the Sharks gave Chiefland the ball at the 49. On a pass attempt to Gent, Shark defensive back Ray Bailey broke up the play but was called for taunting, giving the Indians the ball at the 36. After three plays that produced nothing, senior Chase Harris came on for a 50-yard field goal attempt, but that was blocked by PSJ.  The final score was Port St Joe 2 Chiefland 0.

Even though Chiefland lost their qb in the preseason and only had one player over 230 pounds, they put up an incredible fight.  PSJ eventually lost to Trinity Christian in the state semis.

Answer #17 is k. Lakleand

Lakeland rushed for 358 yards in it incredible 45-42 2OT win over St Thomas Aquinas in the 2006 5A finals.  In one of the best rushing efforts in state title game history, Chris Rainey of Lakeland rushed for 276 yards and 3TD's on 26 runs, including 2 runs of 50+ yards.  Lakeland only attempted 2 passes the entire game for a total of 5 passing yards.  Jeremiah Harden of STA did quite a bit of damage of his own, rushing for 174 yards and 4 TD's in the game.

    • Just wait till spring is over and the top RB in the area will take his talent to 1 Indian Ave.
    • This will be an interesting story to follow.  Venice has no proven RB headed in to spring which will be a first for a long time.  They have produced several Dairy Farmers player of the years in that position.  They also will have a massive offensive line with 2 three year starters who return as well as some stud young kids.  They will probably average around 6'4 295 on the line which is huge for Venice standards.  I just wonder if this will change before the start of the season.  I still fell like someone will show up.
    • Are you still talking to me??  Thought I was pretty clear for you not to waste your breath on this subject matter, but somehow you are missing the point.  Teacher unions have limited power in FL because the candidates they overwhelming support keep losing.  If they had won, the teacher union vote had a lot to do with it and would be wielding that power.  Osceola county which isn't a GOP stronghold during the past two national elections had the journalism students for the OHS monthly newsletter (Kowboy Jake) interview the faculty as to their political leanings.  A sample of about 30 teachers that were interviewed were voting as follows:  25 D vs 5 R.  Enough said.
    • You missed the point of my union post. Teacher unions in strong union states have power. Florida unions have zero. They cant strike and the school board can implement a contract without the unions approval. Florida unions are not preventing any raise in Florida. The state has attacked a straw man here.
