5A BIG PICTURE 

• In terms of big guns, 5A lost some powerhouse programs, but it gained a few as well. 5A Region 2 got stronger and Region 4 got weaker.
• 5A lost the following teams to other classes: Bolles, Cardinal Gibbons, Jefferson, Ponte Vedra, Trinity Christian

Godby in Region 1 shed itself of some powers from the region and class.  But they better not breathe too easily, because playoff teams Baker County, Pine Forest and Raines all join the region.

 

North Marion will not have to deal with a couple of good teams from Region 2 now, but they welcome playoff teams Bishop Moore, Dunnellon, Jones, Lake Weir and Vanguard.  This region just got substantially tougher. 

 

Jesuit in Region 3 loses some good teams from its region, but gains some in return, so the net may be a wash in terms of their path to a region title.  Lake Wales, Merritt Island, Rockledge, Sebring and Zephyrhills are all teams joining the region who made the playoffs this past season.

 

American Heritage Plantation got some good news and bad news in Region 4.  The good news is, the region was decimated, losing 6 of the teams that made the playoffs in that region last season.  Besides, AHP, only the #8 seed, Coconut Creek, remains.  Only two teams that made the playoffs last year join the region, and one is Desoto County, who likely won't provide much resistance.  Now the bad news.  The other team joining the region is 2-time defending state champion Northwestern.  If there is a sure-fire bet for a region final matchup in the upper classes next season, this is it.  Outside these two teams, Region 4 is really lacking in depth.

Got to admit, I am disappointed about 5A.  Not saying it's anyone's fault.  5A was really starting to grow on me, as it was.  I liked seeing some different teams in state finals.  South FL already had a leg up, but with Northwestern joining the party, I am afraid that the south will dominate even more so now.
