The Greatest FL HS Playoff Team Ever?

Check out these teams, each averaging 20-21 pts allowed per playoff game.  Note that most of the teams above averaged 14-17 points allowed per playoff game and their frequency of shutouts is greater.  They say defense wins championships, and "they" are right.

If your team is allowing 20 or more points per game during an individual season, don't count on winning a state title, regardless of how potent your offense is.   Most state title winners allow 17 points or less, on average.

Vero Beach

  • 39-33 in the playoffs
  • 6 shutouts
  • Allowed an average of 20 points per playoff game
  • Worst playoff defeat: 37-6 loss to Lakeland in 1986.

Columbia

  • 36-33 in the playoffs
  • 5 shutouts
  • Allowed an average of 21 points per playoff game
  • Worst playoff defeat: 47-6 loss to Pine Forest in 1988.  .

Deerfield Beach

  • 38-28 in the playoffs
  • 4 shutouts
  • Allowed an average of 20 points per playoff game
  • Worst playoff defeat: 41-3 loss to Apopka in 2001.

Surely this must be a typo. DB has been in the highest class since the early 2000s at least. By contrast Madison over this time has been in the lowest three classes. I doubt these two teams have met in the playoffs over the past 19 seasons.

It's not Madison County.  Over the past 20 years, MC has been one of the most successful small schools in the playoffs.  But prior to that, they really weren't in the picture.  Except for a handful of games, they have kept their playoff losses relatively close.

  • 55-19 in the playoffs
  • 12 shutouts
  • Allowed an average of 23 points per playoff game
  • Worst playoff defeat: Osceola 32-0 back in the 90's

That was my second guess. My first is St. Thomas.
