St Thomas vs Public Schools

I share this simply to demonstrate that St Thomas is beatable, even in sports where they excel...and even by "local" teams.  These are playoff results of major team sports over the past two seasons, including public school teams that knocked a ST Thomas Aquinas squad out of the playoffs during that time frame.  Yes, it is tougher to pull together a great football team than it is a basketball team with only 5 starters.  On the flip side, if St Thomas recruits as heavily as some accuse them, one would think it would not be that difficult for them to win more state titles than they are.

2018/2019

WON  vs Plant (girls volleyball) state final

LOST vs Tampa Bay Tech (girls basketball) state final

LOST vs Ft Lauderdale (boys soccer) region final

LOST vs Lakeland (football) state final

2017/2018

LOST vs Venice (girls volleyball) state semi

LOST vs Nova (girls basketball) region final

LOST vs Cooper City (softball) region final

LOST vs South Broward (boys soccer) second round

LOST vs Venice (football) state semi

LOST vs Dwyer (boys basketball) first round

WON vs Sarasota (baseball) state final

Honestly if you look at STA Football it's not always the idea they have more talent in lineup (there are several schools in FL with a better starting lineup in football)

It's the depth where they have a edge as they may arguably be the deepest team in Broward county even if not the best in terms of the starting 22

Not sure off top of my head but I think all those games are either final 4 or finals

Ok, so assuming the games listed are "Final Four" games, that pretty remarkable that over a two-year period, a single school would have three girls teams (volleyball, basketball and softball) and four boys teams (football, soccer, basketball and baseball) making it that far.  And, based on my recollection, the last two years is not an aberration.   The overwhelming majority of public schools would be lucky to have one or two (or, in a very, very good year, three) teams make it that far.

The only way to win a state title is to make it to the championship game.  STA appears to get to this point more often than just about any other school in the state, regardless of classification.  State championship talent just doesn't show up at public schools year in and year out.  But, as your list demonstrates, getting to the final four and coming home with the gold medal are two different things.

6 of the 11 games in the original post were Final 4 games.  Check out the original post where I have clarified the round of each game.  No doubt St Thomas has an incredible athletic program.  Excluding football, in a number of cases, they could not get past a local foe to win their region.  Maybe I am wrong, but I wouldn't think it would be that difficult for St Thomas to actively recruit players in these other sports and ensure a trip beyond the region final..if they wanted to.

    • Perhaps the best RB in Tampa Bay iin 2023 saw his program close, and is looking for a home. If he stays in the area,Venice is a good bet. (Lakeland may be as well).
    • And if that same newsletter asked the Osceola County Sheriff Department, what do you think the response would be? If you asked, members of the Chamber of Commerce? (Essentially a union of businesses) If you asked a group of nurses? If you asked a group of lawyers? Also a union cares about the working conditions of their members, but the working conditions of teachers are the learning conditions of students as well. People are attracted to careers because of the values that come with those careers. Political Parties attract people based on their values. So it shouldn't be surprising that certain professions attract certain people in certain careers. You act as if the principal's first question when we have a 5,000+ teachers shortage in this state is "who do you vote for? And are you a member of the union?"
    • I feel like y'all are always solid so I don't see y'all going no worse than 7-3. Biggest question mark for Cocoa is their O-line since they are only returning 1 and on the defensive side they only return their blue chip edge in their front 7
    • Coach Wiseman, let me just preface this by saying that you were the best HC Sarasota's program has had in the last 20+ years. You brought them from being a perpetual losing program to the doorstep of competing with Venice for a district title and a deep playoff run. SHS will curse the day they fired you now that they are back in a rut. You are a true class act, and nothing will ever convince me otherwise.  Our backfield is certainly sparse right now. We do have Dorian Jones, a rising sophomore runningback whom did considerably well considering his limited playing time last season. Our offense will need an overhaul with the graduation of 3 offensive linemen and almost our entire receiving corps. Our defensive line will be strong with the return of Ke'shawn Vaughn, Elijah Jones, and Asharri Charles. Our linebacking corps graduates virtually everybody but should have at least one bright spot with the return of Ben Zarkawiecz. Our defensive backfield is still a work in progress with the graduation of Lester and Platt. At the moment, we have more question marks than exclamation points. And that's not a good feeling with the kind of competition Venice is going to face.
    • It's possible that they find their stride by week 5, but at the moment we just don't have the on-paper talent to compete with teams like Miami NW, IMG National, Cocoa, or Bishop Verot. If Venice can find a way to go 7-3 with that schedule I would be happy
