Gary Parris, #84 in the picture below, scored the first touchdown in Citrus Bowl history, a 13-yard pass from quarterback Mark Baker 4 1/2 minutes into the 1967 home opener, a 13-12 loss to defending state champion Melbourne.  He was named Indian River County's Athlete of the Century in 2004.  At Vero, he earned 15 letters in 4 different sports(basketball, baseball, football and track).  At FSU he played tight end and caught 82 passes for 1125 yards.  He was a 15th round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers and spent 8 seasons in the NFL.  For the past 38 years, he has been a radio analyst on Vero Beach games.

The Citrus Bowl opened in 1967.  Who scored the first TD in history there?  He has been recognized as one of the greatest athletes ever at his Treasure Coast school.

The stadium itself was there long before 1967. Back in the day it was the Tangerine Bowl. We played against Metro Conference foe Orlando Jones there. It was open ended.

Edit : correct article below :)

Vero played at the Hibiscus Bowl from 1949 to 1967, when the Citrus Bowl replaced it.  The Citrus Bowl was built by William Hensick & Sons for $87,000.  How did it get funded?

The booster club pledged to sell 587 of 768 reserved seats — located in 24 rows between the two 40-yard lines — as 10-year season tickets at $100 apiece. Their effort accounted for about $60,000. The school kicked in $5,000 from an internal account and the Indian River County School Board covered the rest.

Prior to the Hibiscus Bowl, Vero played its home games at Michael Field, current home of Vero Beach National Little League.
