Hillsborough County Trivia Question

  • 1964: Larry Smith, Robinson (RB) - My Dad used to tell me stories about Larry Smith just completely running over Manatee's Bob Pettee ( who would go on to play for Bear Bryant at Alabama). Manatee belonged to the old Western Conference back then and would play Robinson yearly along with many other Hillsborough teams Larry went on to play professionally for the Rams after completing his college career at Florida. I supposedly saw him play but was much too young to remember.
  • 1967: John Reaves, Robinson (QB) Those Robinson teams were real powerhouse teams, playing Coral Gables for the state title in 67 I believe. Also played at Florida and while he played 10+ years as a pro, he never saw the same kind of success he experienced in HS or in college
  • 1976: Alan Gray, Plant (QB) Plant during the 70's and 80's was coached by Rolland Acosta and his teams were the perennial powerhouse in the Tampa bay area. I saw Plant for the 1st time in my life against Manatee in the 1st round of the 1973 playoffs which Plant won 13-6.......(Manatee's 1st time to make the playoffs) at the original Tampa Stadium. Gray went on to Play also for Bear Bryant at Alabama.
  • 1983: Joey Nicoletto, Chamberlain (LB) Saw him play during the 1st round of the 1983 playoffs against Manatee as well. Manatee would win I want to say 28-13 and go on to win its 1st state title. Chamberlain was coached by Billy Turner and had a number of tuff teams during the 80's that Manatee would see in the playoffs

Larry Smith and John Reeves were excellent college players. Saw both of them many times. FAU's Lane Kiffin "was" married to John Reeves pretty blonde daughter...

How in the heck didn’t Zain Gilmore from Robinson not win it in 1997 when he won Mr Football given to the best player in the entire state???

Mr Football is usually a qb or rb.  I think it's nice that a lineman like Pearson got recognized.  The kid was a hs and NCAA All-American.  I doubt we will ever see a lineman win Mr Football.

One more thing worth noting:  I can't find a website devoted to the award, but several sites make mention that the "Guy Toph Award has been presented to senior football players who excel on the field and in the classroom."   So, apparently, there is an academic element involved that might cause/prompt some folks to give the nod to one player over another player that seemingly has a tad more talent.
