Why is Florida high school offensive play calling so vanilla compared to other states.

One of the things I noticed in Florida is that our offensive play calling as a state is so vanilla & basic; where as other states like Cali & Etc are running pro style offenses.

We have coaches down here who played & coached in the college & pro ranks but yet it seem they bring none of their play callings with them when they come to coach hS.

I think its human nature to do what's easy.  Developing a qb and receiving corp takes work and not every year you got a natural born talent at qb. But finding a big guy you can put at running back and say to your opponents,  come and stop him, that's easy.

I think that's all coaching and determination tho because if you have a great coaching staff and kids that buy in you have them for 4 years & 4 off seasons.

I see a lot of BS offenses where it’s just get it to your best athlete in space and let him work. And that works wonders against most teams if you’re more talented than them. However, I am starting to see more college style offenses up here in NE FL.

I may be missing your point.   Wouldn't one of the signs of a good offense be the ability to come up with multiple plays, week in and week out, where the offense is able to get the ball to their best/fastest athlete in open space?

Really, many of the teams that I see are running some form of the spread option (even whatever ESPN High School Game) with the same basic idea, put the ball in the hands of your best athlete (QB) and allow him to make the plays necessary to win. Yes, many of them can throw the ball, but they are making just as many plays with their feet.

I also think the spread option makes a lot of sense. While I think it is easier to build a consistent offensive line through the weight room, I think there are more little speedy/shifty guys walking the halls of your school. As a result, it is easier to get the ball in space and allow them to create.

The spread option (or some variant) is basically what all of the colleges are running today. As a result, if a high school coach thinks it is his job to get his players into college then he is going to emulate what colleges are doing. I am not saying this is the right idea.

The same plays, over and over again, is what I’m saying. Like they just don’t have the guys to belong on the field with you. And I wouldn’t say it’s bad coaching, it’s just not going to beat teams that are similar to you talent wise.

    • Complaining about North Florida slappies losing to South Florida powers is like someone graduating high school complaining that companies are only hiring college graduates and not them. And then a company saying ok to make it fair, we will open division and only hire high school graduates.
    • First I want to express my apologies for my absence the last few months. Without going into much detail I have had some personal life struggles I have been dealing with on top of figuring out the direction to take FloridaHSFootball.com in. Things have finally settled out some over the last few weeks although I am not completely out of the woods just yet. Some of the decisions about what direction to take FloridaHSFootball.com have been forming over this time while I went through things. Part of me wondered if it was time to go, but really it is not at all. Thankfully, a loyal supporter near me in Gainesville decided to put their mouth where their money is and did a little investing and today FloridaHSFootball.com launched its first-ever Mobile App. With that said it comes with the sunset of the MVP Membership Subscriptions and thus FloridaHSFootball.com will be 100% free for the first time in a while. This comes as needing to get the clearances with Apple and Google and the current subscription platform we have is not syncing with Apple's system nor with the App itself. Its best we go in this direction to grow fans again and being able to put them facing forward with an app on their phone going forward. Here are the download links for the apps: iOS (Apple): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/floridahsfootball-com/id6477621728 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floridahsfootball.app&hl=en_US&gl=US   For now the forums will not be available directly in the app. At some point I maybe looking at changing the whole forum software that could eventually integrate into the app. It will be a while before this happens so things will go on as they are here.   I also apologize for any of the spam and troll accounts that have managed to find their way around the security protocols in setting up new accounts. It seems every day these things find ways to pass through control systems. I am going to be looking at getting this solved and will keep an eye on things here as we go along.   Please feel free to reach out to me if you all need anything, want to chat or have any suggestions.   -- Josh
    • They can definitely beat Central. My bulls is a toss up but I feel we should have the edge. EJ will be hard to stop though. Glad they not in 2A with us.
    • Blountstown at WS Neal AL Sept 27th. Also the Tate vs. Faith Academy game is no more. Tate will be playing Escambia instead now.
