One of Louisiana top teams smashed by DFB

Zachary would be the equivalent of a 5A school in FL.  Deerfield is an 8A school with a much greater population of talent from which to pull...Broward County's population is 4X that of East Baton Rouge parish, where Zachary is located.

This would be like Grayson GA(big metro area) beating 5A Rockledge.  Some FL folks would likely claim unfair fight if that happened.

Well to be fair DFB already lost to a school in 4a this year (Carol City)

So I don't think Zachary being a "smaller school" quite let's them off the hook for this, even as a smaller school Zachary is generally one of best LA has each year

Just like John Curtis would be a 4a school in FL but many would favor John Curtis over most 8a schools in FL

When you are a "top 10" level school in a state as talented as Louisiana it's isn't always about school size

John Curtis is argubly the strongest program in LA historically but would be a 4a school size wise in FL

But how many schools in FL would you comfortably say FL has that could beat them regardless of size

When you that good you can often times get around being a "smaller school"

Big difference between a public school in Baton Rouge(Zachary) and a private school in New Orleans(John Curtis).  New Orleans metro area is over 1.5 times the size(population) of Baton Rouge.  So, John Curtis has a substantially larger pool to pull from and the "private school advantage."  Not taking away from DFB's win.  But I would not get too excited about it just yet.

Ok that is a fair point

Other examples i could point to would be like a Brentwood Academy in TN who is probably best school in that state year to year but isn't even close to being one of the larger schools

Buford in GA another one who has beaten large schools both in GA and OOS in the past

Brentwood(Nashville) and Buford(Atlanta) are smaller schools in HUGE metro areas.  Brentwood is private and Buford may as well be the way they function.  They have huge talent pools from which to pull.  That makes a big difference.  It's like comparing Rockledge versus Miami Northwestern.  Both are 5A but...

But one is in perhaps the deepest talent pool in FL and the other while being in a fast rising area is not gonna have the same level of talent pool as Miami

That's my point.  It's not exactly apples-to-apples to compare Northwestern and Rockledge, is it?  There are several variables when comparing schools like we are doing...school size, local population/talent pool, private vs public, etc.  And when comparing OOS schools, one must look at things like transfer rules, ie FL vs a state with stricter transfer rules.

This is why it is difficult to find a fair fight for St Thomas...a relatively huge private school in a talent-laden area.  St Thomas is much bigger than a lot of private schools in the state and nationwide.  They are almost always going to have an advantage in at least one of the variables mentioned above, whether they are playing in-state or OOS.

Another thing to keep in mind when making comparisons with schools in states like Alabama, Mississippi, and Lousiana.    According to Maxpreps(FWIW), Zachary is the #12 team in Louisiana.  Deerfield Beach is the #14  team in FL.  Fair fight, right?  Not so fast.

Louisina has 233 schools playing football in its 5 classes(see below).  That puts Zachary in approximately the 5th percentile of schools in LA.  The 5th percentile of schools in FL would be about #25.  If an OOS whooped our #25 team and some were crowing about it, I bet there are some on the Forum who would say "what's the big deal?"

FL has over 4.5 times the population of Louisiana.  Simply by the law of #'s, talent being equal, FL is going to have way more good teams than Lousiana ever will.  In any one year, Louisiana might produce 5 really good teams, whereas FL might produce 20.

So what's the point?  It's sometimes apples-to-oranges to use such OOS matchups to judge the talent of individual states.  From a population standpoint, FL dwarfs most states.  43 states have less than half the population of FL.

5A 52 schools

4A 51 schools

3A 52 schools

2A 46 schools

1A 32 schools

    • First I want to express my apologies for my absence the last few months. Without going into much detail I have had some personal life struggles I have been dealing with on top of figuring out the direction to take FloridaHSFootball.com in. Things have finally settled out some over the last few weeks although I am not completely out of the woods just yet. Some of the decisions about what direction to take FloridaHSFootball.com have been forming over this time while I went through things. Part of me wondered if it was time to go, but really it is not at all. Thankfully, a loyal supporter near me in Gainesville decided to put their mouth where their money is and did a little investing and today FloridaHSFootball.com launched its first-ever Mobile App. With that said it comes with the sunset of the MVP Membership Subscriptions and thus FloridaHSFootball.com will be 100% free for the first time in a while. This comes as needing to get the clearances with Apple and Google and the current subscription platform we have is not syncing with Apple's system nor with the App itself. Its best we go in this direction to grow fans again and being able to put them facing forward with an app on their phone going forward. Here are the download links for the apps: iOS (Apple): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/floridahsfootball-com/id6477621728 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floridahsfootball.app&hl=en_US&gl=US   For now the forums will not be available directly in the app. At some point I maybe looking at changing the whole forum software that could eventually integrate into the app. It will be a while before this happens so things will go on as they are here.   I also apologize for any of the spam and troll accounts that have managed to find their way around the security protocols in setting up new accounts. It seems every day these things find ways to pass through control systems. I am going to be looking at getting this solved and will keep an eye on things here as we go along.   Please feel free to reach out to me if you all need anything, want to chat or have any suggestions.   -- Josh
    • They can definitely beat Central. My bulls is a toss up but I feel we should have the edge. EJ will be hard to stop though. Glad they not in 2A with us.
    • Blountstown at WS Neal AL Sept 27th. Also the Tate vs. Faith Academy game is no more. Tate will be playing Escambia instead now.
    • I like it if there is only 4 classes
    • I like the match. An entire COUNTY against a small little Catholic school. Toss up.
