Flagler Palm Coast at Apopka

Thoughts and observations: 1. Sloppy game, Apopka must have given up 200 yards of penalties including a ton of motion penalties, which in similar circumstances have not been called by other crews. I don't think those and several others were deserved. 2. FPC has a good sophomore QB. If he can grow three inches or more, he will play at the next level. 3. The lead changed hands several times, but Apopka scored the final 21 points to win 42-25. 4. Game had several big plays by both teams, juxtaposed with the overall sloppy play which was no doubt influenced by the weather conditions. 5. Unless Apopka improves and cuts down on the mistakes, it is going to be very hard for them to beat Bartram Trail at their house. 6. The better team won, but FPC did expose some chinks in APK's defense that the Central Florida teams they faced did not. 7. The number of penalties called by the officials severely interfered with the rhythm of the game. 8. TV, despite playing hurt, nailed all his PATs tonight.

Apopka had the same issues last year in the playoffs when the Darters get an officiating crew from another area who doesn't see their offense all the time. Fouls are to be called to the letter of the law at this point of the season.

Jambun, I'll bite on this one (especially since I don't have a dog in the fight).  Why do the officials in the playoffs, who aren't familiar with Apopka, throw more flags on the Darters in the playoff games than regular season refs do?   I'm assuming that the Apopka offense is essentially playing the exact same way and doing the exact same thing in the playoffs as they did in the regular season.   Are the regular season refs being too lenient or are the playoff refs calling things that really shouldn't be called?  And/or are the refs getting fooled by the style of offense that the Darters play?

With that question asked, I'll ask you one more:  do playoff refs study film?   In other words, if a crew comes into Apopka to call a game and hasn't reffed a game involving an offense like Apopka's, do they look at any film ahead of time to prepare them for what they are going to see when they actually show up and blow the whistle to start the game?

Because the Apopka coach doesn't curse at the officials so they give him the benefit of the doubt in the regular season and don't call as many flags because he respects them.  The playoff officials are from a different area and don't know the Apopka coach so they call it by the letter of the law.

Perespective, I don't know if the regular season officials are being too lenient. It is just that the officials who see teams like Apopka, who run unconventional offenses might allow things that are by defintion fouls, but might not get called penalties because they have little to no effect on the play. However, once the playoffs start, officials are officiating teams who they are not familar with, and in and one loss and done circumstance. These type of fouls become penalties because they are violations of the rules.

 The answer to the second question is that generally speaking, officials do NOT study film on teams who they will be officiating coming up. Officials might discuss with the local officials about certain teams, and styles of play however.

Badbird, did the school that you coached at have blue and black or red and silver colors?
