2008 Seminole beats 2-time defending state champion Northwestern 28-21 in the 6A final

2007 Osceola scores 18 unanswered 4th quarter points in Lakeland to beat the 3-time defending state champs 25-21 and end their 53-game regular season winning streak

Not sure either of these were upsets in the truest sense for those that follow football closely. In 2008 MNW was significantly down in the sense that their National Championship team members had mostly graduated and Teddy Bridgewater was a sophomore. Yes, it was a decent Northwestern team but not a great one as the 2007 and 2006 teams had been. Seminole had three studs, of which Ray Ray Armstrong went on to play in the NFL.

Regarding Osceola, they had a very, very good, but not deep team in 2007. Had key parts of it not sustained serious injury in the playoffs, I think they may have been able to upset St. Thomas that year. As it was, they still gave a decent performance in the title game. Lakeland, on the other hand, was a bit down in 2007 (similar to MNW in 2008) and was ripe for the upset, which I called in a post (titled: "All things Human.") the day before the game.

Most everyone knows the deal with Madison County. They opened a charter school and now they qualify for 1A. They are really making a team up from 800 students but because of a loop hole they only count 600. They didn’t make the rule but they are benefiting from it. What was a once in a lifetime team from Hawthorne last year was denied winning a title when in reality they probably deserved it. As long as you don’t have to count the charter school number Madison should win championships. Everyone magically comes in just under the 600 number in 1A that is close. You never see any rural teams that have 611 or 616.  Take nothing away from Madison they are a great program and football team but if they were in 4A where they belong it would be a much better fit. Congratulations to Madison on another title!!

Clewiston is an apples to apples comparison to Madison. There is only 1 public high school in the county (Hendry and Madison). They both have a charter school that doesn’t offer sports, so their kids compete for the public school. The difference is that Clewiston is 4A and Madison is 1A, but I think Madison is a bigger city.

Can’t wait until Friday, because it’s not gonna be what people think.

You are absolutely right about Clewiston. How does Madison slip under the radar?

There are other North Florida teams that deserve to be Champs but I don't see any of them that come close to challenging Madison.

There are 2 public schools in Hendry county.  Clewiston is one, class 4a and Labelle is the other,  class 5a.

I know, but Madison High and Clewiston High are about the same size (population wise), but MC is playing in 1A. People have been pointing out that MC shouldn’t be in 1A, but they found a loophole in the rules. Their fans ignore that and act like they are dominating on a level playing field.

From a Pahokee standpoint, we’ll play anyone, but don’t try to ignore the fact your playing almost 3 classes down.

Madison had enrollment numbers of 690-670 from 2009-2012. The charter scored opened in 2013 with only like 30-40 kids. They now have 200 kids enrolled in 2019. Madison’s enrollment numbers dropped into the 590’s-570 in 2014-18. Clewiston is a bigger school as they had a enrollment number of 920’s this year. If Madison counted the charter school they would have 750-800.

Though these may not be all of the biggest upsets in history, they are certainly amongst the most memorable.

2011 Cooper City beats St Thomas Aquinas 21-16 at St Thomas during the regular season

2008 Seminole beats 2-time defending state champion Northwestern 28-21 in the 6A final

2007 Osceola scores 18 unanswered 4th quarter points in Lakeland to beat the 3-time defending state champs 25-21 and end their 53-game regular season winning streak

2001 Haines City snaps Lakeland's record-setting 60-game regular season winning streak, beating them 2-0 in Haines City

2001 Rockledge comes to the Muck and snaps nationally-ranked, 3-time defending state champ Glades Central's 47-game winning streak

2000 Venice beats defending state champ and nationally-ranked Lakeland 34-30 at Venice in the playoffs

1998 Estero beats Lakeland 15-14 in the playoffs at Lakeland

1996 Bartow beats nationally-ranked Bolles 14-13 in the 4A final

1996 Piper beats St Thomas Aquinas 21-0 at Piper and won the district title

1989 JI Leonard beats powerhouse Riverview 15-14 in Sarasota in the playoffs

1987 Naples Lely beats Glades Central 26-20 in 2OT in the Muck in the playoffs

The Bartow over Bolles game is the biggest upset. Bolles was ranked #1 in the country and the injuries they sustained in that game ended up being too much to overcome
