How will schools respond?

This board has already had long discussions on how CoVid-19 will affect the upcoming football season.

How will the protests affect the season? If a player/band member/cheerleader take a knee, does a coach not play someone?

How can coaches focus on how their programs can be unifying places in these tumultuous times? Is this even a discussion coaches have with their players?

Well I know personally that Columbia is never on the field/sideline when they play the national anthem because most of the time they always run behind on the locked room speech so they are usually just getting to the tunnel by time the anthem starts (at home)

As for the question in general it likely will depend, I think some coaches out there will support the kneeling idea while some won't but I do think if the entire team decides to do so the coach can't bench the entire team

Also I could see some booster clubs in more "conservative" areas pushing for punishment for coaches/players who choose to do so even at the detriment of the team (thank goodness our team always late getting out there anyway because our fair weather fans would take advantage of the opportunity to try and further drag our program down)

A couple of thoughts:

Like always, it will trickle down.  What happens at the NFL and collegiate levels will likely be replicated by high school teams, players and coaches.

Based on what I've seen at local protests, my prediction (hope?) is that whatever is done this time around is more likely to be done by a larger group of players - if not entire teams - with white players joining black players more so than the last time around.  I could even see opposing teams meeting at or close to midfield for the national anthem to kneel together in a unified effort.

A lot will depend on what happens between now and mid-August.   Yeah, I know that's only two months, but who would have thought in February that our country would be in the middle of a pandemic quarantine in April and who would have thought in April that peaceful protests and not-so-peaceful rioting would be taking place across our country in June?   In other words, a lot can change in two months.

And some booster clubs in certain areas would push for coaches who allow kneeling to get fired

yup.  It's a lose lose situation.

Some people would push for the kids that kneel to be suspended or punished.

As a head Coach I'm going to have conversations with my players.  If you choose to kneel then you are going to do more than just that.  You are going to donate money to a charity or do community service hours toward that cause.   We are not kneeling just because everyone else is kneeling and it's the cool thing to do.  If you feel that strong about it lets do something about it and make a difference.  I'll kneel with you and be right by your side on the weekend trying to bring about change.

I think that would be a great message for the kids...one that would challenge them...and one many of them would appreciate.  Each of us, as leaders, should have the freedom to put our own spin on things without walking on eggshells, so that our message comes across as personalized and genuine.  Unfortunately, one takes takes a risk today when one does this.  Invariably there will be some who disagree with your approach. Today, some people will go out of there way to destroy your career for suggesting something that might challenge their fragile little child.
