Charlie Persson was head coach at Jupiter High for 30 years.  He stepped down in 2011.  While there, he compiled a 142-164 record and his teams made 11 playoff appearances. Back in the 1970's, Persson played d-line at Georgetown (Ky.) College and was the schools’ first Kodak All-American and a three-time NAIA First Team player. He was elected to the Georgetown Hall of Fame in 2001.

After college, he signed with the short-lived Memphis Southmen of the USFL, but when that folded he returned to Georgetown as an assistant coach. In 1977, he became an assistant coach at Houston-Northbrook High and took a job as the head coach at Perth Amboy (N.J.) High in 1978. The following year he was head coach at Bourbon (Ky.) High and stayed there until he came to Jupiter in 1982.

I like hearing about coaches like this. It's not always about winning championships.

The Memphis Southmen played in the WFL, although the owner of the team, John Bassett, also owned the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL.
