Miami Columbus (5-0) v Deerfield (4-0) 8A Tri-County Championship: FINAL 27-24

Columbus hasn't been on the field in a month due to two final games that were Covid compromised, so they are ready to hit but I imagine will come out a little rusty. Deerfield Beach would love some revenge from the last two meetings which went for the Explorers, despite DB having a seriously talented squad.

 

UPDATE: kickoff delayed. DB showed up late.

Columbus rough start - rusty, 3 and out. Fumbled snap gives DB good position at Columbus 35, DB settles for FG.

on ensuing kickoff, it appeared Javhar McSween took it to the house. Stepped out at about the 8 yard line though. Columbus punches it in 2 plays later with 2 yard pass to Gibert. 7-3 Columbus 4:24 left in 1st

DB chargers back down the field in no-huddle O with a couple big runs. DB O-line jumping quite a bit.

DB goes for it on 4th and 7 and turns it over on downs near the Explorer 30.

Mendoza rolls out for Columbus from under center, gets off a big 30+ yd pass to McSween. DB D gets stout. Columbus goes for it on 4th and 2 in DB territory to open the 2nd quarter. Columbus TD pass to Gibert called back on holding.

Columbus missed 45yd FG. DB takes over on their own 20. Drives with a series of runs right up the Columbus gut.  DB receiver  McDougle drops one right in his hands. DB back to the run. Toomer, Columbus DB makes great defensive play. DB punt all the way down to Columbus 8.

30+ yard pass from Mendoza caught by Gibert.  Next play Mendoza fumble in backfield. 

DB ball on Explorer 21.

Columbus QB with some greasy hands tonight. three fumbles, this one may hurt.

DB turns it over in the red zone. Columbus begins drive from own 10. DB D-Line is tough up the middle against a solid Columbus running back duo. Mendoza sends Quinn out of the backfield into the flats - hits him in tha hands and is dropped. Columbus punt to DB 35.

2 minutes left in half. Columbus begins drive at own 20.

Good drive: 10 yd run, 15 yd pass, 20 yd pass, 15 yd run, pass interference (questionable call if ball was catchable). Columbus 1st at DB 20, Quinn with a couple runs up the middle.

30 seconds left. Columbus Time out

Explorers get inside the 10 before a false start sets them back 5.  Incomplete pass. 5 yd pass. FG team lines up with 5 seconds left for 3. Half ends 10-3 Explorers.

DB received at the half, followed by a 3 and out.

Columbus marching down inside the DB 20. Quinn, a non-factor for much of the 1st half, now pounding the rock behind that big Columbus O-Line. 

Unfortunately as a receiver he has dropped two open passes. Columbus has to settle for a FG.

Not surprising at all, even in the tri county championship the bucks just cannot close. Coming into this game they said they wouldn’t be denied. The explorers denying them big time right now. Still a lot of time tho. Leave it all on the field bucs.

DF begins possession with some nice misdirection, picks up 15. QB keeper misdirection working well for DB. Moved into Explorer territory. DB receivers getting into the action now... after Columbus D finally stopping Patterson up the middle.

Personal foul on Explorers moves DB into Columbus red zone. QB keepers working against the overly aggressive Columbus D. official timeout, 2 minutes left in 3Q. DB at the Columbus 1.
