I’m organizing a Pick’em Contest for the 2021 season.  My plan is to play for 11 weeks (Week of August 27 – Week of November 5).

Scoring:

Each week, there will be 10 games to pick.  You will pick the winners and assign a confidence rating for every game.  Your most confident pick is give the 10 point spot.  The next most confident pick is for 9 points and all the way down to your least confident pick for 1 point.  A perfect week will get you 55 points.  I will track points throughout the season by username.  For example:

10: Team A over Team B

9: Team F over Team E

8: Team D over Team C

etc.

Season Long Prizes:

For now, bragging rights.  Depending on how popular this endeavor ends up, I may throw a couple gift cards as prizes.

Picks:

Games will be posted by 5:00 PM on Monday.  I will do my best to incorporate some lesser known match-ups as well as try to cover the entire state.  Picks will be due by 7:00 PM on Friday.  Games that are cancelled/postponed will result in a shortened schedule for the week.

The week 1 game between Cardinals Gibbons and Venice has been canceled due to Covid-19. It has been rescheduled for October 23rd.

Sorry to hear that. Not surprised. Covid has a very strong presence in the state at this time. Hope it is behind us soon.

Without further cancellations, the game may be even better in late October. Both teams should be at their best about that time of the season. It's just a bummer that any games have to be effected by the virus.

Our game just canceled against St. Cloud, no reason given but suspect it was for same.  No one expected this to be a competitive game, but locals want it for legacy reasons (first game in 1925) as it has been played every year since 1945.  Most of the time a good ticket gate at each school.

Me too. Venice is now scheduled to play Edgewater this Friday, instead of Gibbons according to Coach Peacock. I don’t know if Venice will find a replacement for week 2, or if they will continue the schedule with Cocoa as planned.

What happened to the Bishop Moore/Edgewater game?

Unless BM has Covid issues, I would be surprised if the Edgewater game was cancelled. I see no reason for Edgewater to give up a backyard game to travel to Venice without the benefit of a KOC when they already have Venice on their schedule.

I would not make that move unless the BM game was cancelled.

He may be right. But to me that's not a smart move on the part of Edgewater unless BM pulled out. They already have Venice who is clearly a tough opponent. Why would you choose to play them without the benefit of a game under your belt when you have them shortly after?

    • I totally agree with you 100 percent. Human element is needed. I have yet to see a computer watch a football game.
    • Would like to think that pride, integrity, character, honor would prevent the scenario you describe, but this is high school football in Florida.  The Week 11 non-district games would be a perfect time to “rest” some key players (“load management” as they call it in the NBA), heal up “injuries”, or give the back-ups some playing time. The bigger issue is that it is extremely unlikely that MaxPreps will identify the “best” 8 teams in the state.  MaxPreps is excellent at ranking teams at the end of the post-season, but not as reliable at the end of the regular season.  And why do MaxPreps rankings differ from the FHSAA Power Rankings, the LAZ index, Joshua Wilson’s FPRI, etc (no disrespect to the latter two)?  Which one is the most accurate?  Without a human element included in the selection process, MaxPreps will identify 8 teams that look the best to their particular variables, weighting, and formula, but this biased process will not guarantee the intent of the Open Division is met – identifying the best of the best.
    • what happens if, your 8-0, district title is secured, your lingering around the 6,7,8 spot in state max preps rankings.  however, you know, your not going to run the gambit of west boca, chaminade, venice, st thomas, columbus, miami central, etc, etc, etc.  and,,,,, coach dumps last 2 weeks of season, 8-2 and fall out of max preps top 8.  and run the table in your playoff division.... is it better to be 8th ranked in max preps and lose at some point in that bracket or  10th ranked and roll thru your division to a state title?  is the class 3405-A,  state champ better than 2nd round loss in open division  someone does this, i can promise it.
    • I like it. Especially for all the super teams who get 20+ transfers in year in and year out. Let those teams battle it out in the open division top 8. When it comes to this football stuff its levels. You have horrible teams, average teams, very good teams & super teams. If youre a super team with God knows how many transfers and youre going up against a very good team in the playoffs the super team is gonna win 9/10 times. Doing the open division puts all the super teams against each other and see whose the top dawg. The regular state playoffs is gonna be more of a even playing field if u ask me. No super teams, just deserving teams battling out for the state championship
    • American heritage has 7 titles they also won 2020, 2024 & 2025  Chaminade whose in 2A has 8 titles winning 2019 , 2021,2022,2023, and 2024
