Clearwater Central Catholic playing in the program’s third overall state championship game in program history was denied to get the program’s first-ever state championship going up against a roster of talented athletes from Chaminade-Madonna that includes the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect in the 2024 class by 247 Sports in Jeremiah Smith.

Bailey dominates fast with Trader and Smith helping the show

Cedrick Bailey, who has led the Lions to their past two state championships as the starting quarterback started fast and quick in getting the Lions as all it took was three plays on the opening drive by the Lions to find the end zone as Bailey threw a nice spiral pass to Smith for a 50-yard touchdown reception with just 30 seconds gone on the first quarter clock to make it 7-0.

Bailey was quick to find a touchdown again on their second drive of the game as a holding call on the Marauders reset the downs for Chaminade-Madonna to setup a 54-yard touchdown pass to Joshisa Trader to make it 14-0 with 5:23 left in the first quarter.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH:

WR Jeremiah Smith (Chaminade-Madonna) vs. SS Andy Jaffe (Clearwater Central Catholic) – Big 12 vs. SEC in this matchup as Andy Jaffe who is committed to Ole Miss is going up against the nation’s No. 1 prospect in Jeremiah Smith who is committed to Ohio State. This matchup should be interesting as no one has been really throwing in Jaffe’s direction the entire season. If Jaffe could limit Smith with the receptions he can make, that could force Cedrick Bailey to look the other way and to guys like Joshisa Trader and Denarius Gray to move the ball downfield.

QB Jershuan Newton (Clearwater Central Catholic) vs. DE Zach Crothers (Chaminade-Madonna) – Newton is a dual-threat quarterback, and he can blast you either way which makes this matchup even more interesting. If Crothers can break free and get into the backfield, it could make for a long morning for Newton.

OUTLOOK: A rematch of last year’s 2022 Class 1M State Championship game, some wonder if Clearwater Central Catholic would take a step back from last year’s squad. Instead, the Marauders have much improved under a very tough schedule that includes playing two teams that have reached state championship games in their respective classifications in Berkeley Prep (Tampa) (2M) and Trinity Catholic (Ocala) (2S). The Marauders will have Jershaun Newton on offense and Andy Jaffe on defense to help lead the way, two of the key athletes who remember what the running clock defeat felt like from a year ago when this game was contested at Gene Cox Stadium. Newton is going to be a threat to contain once again as Newton has accounted for almost 3,000 yards of the Marauders’ offense this season. Jaffe will be dangerous in his own right as he is a defender that no opposing offenses want to even throw nearby. Coming into the season, Chaminade-Madonna was pegged as the favorite to win the classification and still has a chance to accomplish the task. For the Lions, this is their eighth consecutive trip to a state championship game that goes back to the 2016 season, the first year under Coach Dameon Jones. The Lions will have key athletes like Cedrick Bailey, Jeremiah Smith, Davion Gause, Joshisa Trader, and Zach Crothers who have been here and have been key pieces to the Lions’ state championship success. Bailey will have quite a few weapons that will help him get the ball out and down the field quickly. Gause has missed some action this year due to injury, but when called upon Gause can cause damage when the passing game gets limited by an opposing defense.

PREDICTION: Chaminade-Madonna 35, Clearwater Central Catholic 17

The state semifinals are in the books and there were a couple of surprising results along with some nail bitting action as teams around the state punched their tickets to the 2023 FHSAA State Championships in Tallahassee next week at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee. Here is a recap of all the action from the 18 state semifinal games that took place across the Sunshine State on Thursday and Friday nights.

CLASS 4M

No. 1 Columbus (Miami) 27, No. 4 Plant (Tampa) 7 – The Explorers dispatched the Panthers who were in the state semifinals for the first time since 2018 earning a hard-fought win to get the right to defend their Class 4M state championship. Agyeman Addae and Speedy Bandy had rushing touchdowns while Alberto Mendoza threw for a touchdown. Robert Czeremcha had two field goal for the Explorers including a 5t1-yard field goal at the end of the first half.

No. 3 Mandarin (Jacksonville) 51, No. 2 Monarch (Coconut Creek) 21 – The Knights, appearing in their first state semifinal contest in program history, was no match for the visiting Mustangs who were looking to get to the state championship game for the first time since winning it all in 2018 in Class 8A. The Mustangs which started out early in the game struggling eventually pulled away in the second half to setup a rematch against Columbus who they won the state championship against in 2018.

CLASS 3M

No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) 50, No. 4 Gaither (Tampa) 14 – The magic ran out for the Gaither Cowboys who had to face the juggernaut of defending Class 3M state champion St. Thomas Aquinas. The Raiders dominated from the start as they led by a large margin at halftime, but never could get the running clock going to end the game despite the 50-14 score. The Raiders now get a chance to become the first team in the Sunshine State to win five straight state championships.

https://twitter.com/sta_football/status/1730945702908269024?s=61&t=YnUdI_gdfRrjWWsEaRnyNw

No. 2 Homestead 42, No. 3 Jones (Orlando) 35 – In a rematch from last year’s Class 3M state semifinal, but this time at Harris Field, Jones gave it everything they got but it was not enough as it the host Broncos edged the Tigers to return to the Class 3M state championship game for the second straight season. The difference in the game was turnovers for Homestead as they edge Jones in that category that led them to victory.

CLASS 2M

No. 1 Miami Norland 28, No. 4 Bolles (Jacksonville) 7 – The Vikings which knocked off the defending Class 2M state champions last week, now will have a chance to win it all for the first time since defeating Wakulla in the 2011 Class 5A state championship. The Vikings were led by Juan Rodriguez’s 195 rushing yards as they turned back a visiting Bulldogs team that had seen a late season surge during the playoffs that knocked off teams like Raines (Jacksonville) and Bishop Moore (Orlando) along the way.

No. 3 Berkeley Prep (Tampa) 17, No. 2 American Heritage (Plantation) 14 – There won’t be a second straight state championship game appearance for the Patriots who let it slip away late in the game against the visiting Buccaneers who will appear in a state championship game for the second time in three seasons. Dallas Golden scored what’s would be the game-winning touchdown and two-point conversion to upset the national ranked Patriots on the road.

CLASS 1M

No. 1 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) 47, Archbishop Carroll (Miami) 7 – The visiting Bulldogs in their first state semifinal appearance in program history was no match for the defending Class 1M state champion Chaminade-Madonna. Quarterback Cedrick Bailey went 7-of-10 passing for 109 yards and four touchdowns while Jeremiah Smith, Davion Gause and Angelo Smith each had a rushing touchdown. Joshisa Trader had 100 yards receiving and two scores for Chaminade-Madonna. The Lions also made history by reaching their eight-consecutive state championship game which dates back to 2016, the first year that current head coach Dameon Jones took over the program.

No. 2 Clearwater Central Catholic 39, No. 3 Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) 32 – The visiting Conquerors got off to a hot start, leading 20-7 at one point in the game. However, the host Marauders surged back late again and then took the lead late like they did against Carrollwood Day last week to edge Trinity Christian to advance to the Class 1M state championship for the second consecutive year to setup a rematch of last year’s state championship game against Chaminade-Madonna.

CLASS 4S

No. 4 Lakeland 21, No. 1 Buchholz (Gainesville) 20 – A missed extra point by the host Bobcats is the story of this game along with a tip interception inside their own territory that led points by the visiting Dreadnaughts that tell the story of this game. For Buchholz this was their straight trip to the state semifinals and the closest they were to reaching their first state championship game since winning the Class 4A state title in 1990. Buchholz got off to a 14-0 start in the first quarter, but it was 14-14 by the time the end of the first half concluded. Lakeland, under first-year head coach Marvin Frazier will now get a chance to go for state championship No. 9 and defend their Class 4S state championship in the process.

No. 2 Venice 51, DeLand 21 – Venice knew what it was going to take as they took on the single-wing offense of Rick Darlington’s DeLand Bulldogs and they showed a master class in how to defend it in the process, rolling out to a big lead by halftime and never turning back to send them to their third straight state championship game. Alvin Johnson III led in rushing with 172 yards and two touchdowns while Jamarice Wilder had 120 yards rushing and two scores as well.
No. 1 St. Augustine 35, No. 4 Dunbar (Fort Myers) 14 – The visiting Tigers, playing in their second consecutive state semifinal found St. Augustine to be very overwhelming as the Yellow Jackets were in the first state semifinal since a 2020 triple overtime loss to Lake Minneola in Class 6A that year. The Yellow Jackets riding high on solid offense along with some tough defense dispatched the Tigers to send St. Augustine to their first state championship game appearance since 2007.

No. 2 Bradford (Starke) 22, No. 3 Pensacola Catholic 21 (OT) – After being down 14-0 through three quarters, the host Tornadoes stormed back in the fourth quarter, touching down twice in the end zone with help of scores from Nigel Nelson and Jeremiah McKenzie to force overtime. In overtime it would be Dae’jon Shanks who scored the touchdown and the game-winning two-point conversion on a gutsy call to go for the win by head coach Jamie Rodgers to send Bradford to their first state championship game since 1985.
No. 4 Trinity Catholic (Ocala) 51, No. 1 First Baptist (Naples) 36 – Unlike last year’s meeting in the Class 1S state championship game that saw First Baptist winning it all, Trinity Catholic returned the favor and then some as the Celtics have now posted two 50-plus point games in the playoffs in the last three games played. Trinity Catholic’s defense posted three sacks and recorded three interceptions in the victory. The Celtics also make history as appear to be the first team with a losing-record in Florida to reach a state championship game after having a 3-7 record in the regular season.

No. 2 Cardinal Mooney (Sarasota) 41, No. 3 North Florida Christian (Tallahassee) 14 – The host Cougars dispatched the visiting Eagles with a lot of fire as Cardinal Mooney will be playing in their first state championship game since winning it all in Class A in 1972.

CLASS 1R

No. 1 Hawthorne 49, No. 4 Blountstown 0 – In a rematch of last year’s Class 1R state semifinal, the Hornets did even more damage to the visiting Tigers this time around as quarterback CJ Ingram, the son of head coach Cornelius Ingram, threw for four touchdowns. The Hornets’ defense allowed Blountstown only three first-downs and never allowed them cross midfield at all during the game as the Tigers were troubled with mishaps throughout the game. The win sends Hawthorne to the rural classification state championship game for the fourth consecutive year with a chance to defend their state championship next week.

The Cowboys raced off to a hot start in the first half scoring over 40 points and never turning back to send Price Harris to his first state championship game in his head coaching career and setup a showdown with Hawthorne next week.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Hungry for another state championship in their record-breaking seventh straight trip to the FHSAA Football State Championships, the Chaminade-Madonna Lions did not disappoint at all creating havoc all night long for Clearwater Central Catholic in a Thursday night tilt for the Class 1M State Championship at Gene Cox Stadium.

At the end of the night, the Lions captured the Class 1M State Championship over the outmatched Marauders and marked the second straight state championship for the school out of Hollywood.

VIDEO RECAP

FloridaHSFootball.com Publisher Joshua Wilson, Jon Santucci of USA TODAY Network in Florida, and Andy Villamarzo of SBLive recap the 2022 Class 1M State Championship Game with their thoughts.

CLOUDS OF SMOKE IN THE FIRST HALF

If the way the Lions came out on the field during their introductions were any indication, the clouds of smoke they created in the celebration hype were going to be the same clouds of smoke they were going to create against the Marauders.

With the Lions getting the ball first it was they were determined to get the first points of the night and they managed that in just the first 66 seconds of the game as Cedrick Bailey completed a short pass to the right to Joshisa Trader coming out of the no-huddle situation to put Chaminade-Madonna up 7-0.

That first touchdown play was set up a few plays earlier when Bailey found Jeremiah Smith down deep for a 40-yard gain that got them into the Marauders territory.

For Clearwater Central Catholic the goal of the night was trying to limit as much damage as they could from Chaminade-Madonna and one idea was trying to keep possession of the ball as long as possible.

And on the first drive of the game, they managed to do that with a nine-play 40-yard drive that took 4:50 off the clock before the Marauders were forced to punt the ball away.

However, that did not matter as the Lions took the next drive for seven plays and took 1:45 off the clock running the no-huddle offense that was guided by a deep pass by Bailey connecting with Edwin Joseph for 42 yards to get the Lions down to the Marauders 28. That drive was capped off with a Davion Gause 16-yard bruising run up the middle to put the Lions up 14-0.

Clearwater Central Catholic’s second drive of the first half saw them get down into the red zone at the Chaminade-Madonna 16 before going backward thanks to a Denzel Johnson sack that backed the Marauders up to the Lions 21.

That drive would end on a fourth down attempt on an incomplete pass by Jeshaun Newton who was looking for Luis Sanchez that was broken up by Zaquan Patterson.

If that didn’t add more fuel to the fire, the Lions came back out again with their no-huddle offense going for nine plays down the field with Bailey finding Smith for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 10:02 left before half taking less than two minutes off the clock.

Clearwater Central Catholic kept stumbling going three and out on their next drive, but some spark came with just about six minutes left before half when Nate Johnson III got in and blocked an Andrew Abu-Akel 31-yard field goal, representing about the only thing that went wrong for the Lions all night.

That blocked field goal was then scooped up by Sanchez and returned 60 yards down to the Chaminade-Madonna 11, giving them the best field position for the offense in the first half before faltering and turning it over on downs at the Chaminade-Madonna three.

Chaminade-Madonna proceeded to take the Marauders’ failure and pushed it right back against them running an eight-play, 97-yard drive taking just 1:50 off the clock that would be capped with a Bailey pass to Smith for 23 yards to put the Lions up 28-0, a score they would take with them into half.

Chaminade-Madonna would punt once in the entire first half, another rare thing we saw from the Lions in the game.

MARAUDERS COME ALIVE… BUT IT WOULD BE SHORT-LIVED

With receiving the second-half kickoff, the Marauders were looking for anything to get points on the board and to stop some of the momentum the Lions had carried into the locker room at halftime.

And sure, enough the Marauders would find their way to the endzone on a nine-play, 67-yard drive led by Lenwood Sapp and Newton that would be capped off by a one-yard Sapp touchdown to cut the score to 28-7 in favor of Chaminade-Madonna with 8:05 left in the third quarter.

However, that touchdown response from Clearwater Central Catholic was quickly met with a response from Chaminade-Madonna in just four plays and 1:40 taken off the clock when Gause went up the middle for a 10-yard touchdown to put the lead up to 35-7, but still not in the range for a running clock.

Clearwater Central Catholic would get the ball back by trying to respond back to the Lions’ score and trying to find ways to points fast, but it did not happen after going 10 plays down the field to the Chaminade-Madonna 25 before failing to convert on a fourth down play when Sapp gained only one of two yards needed.

For the Lions, their longest drive of the game came going into the fourth quarter that would be capped with a Duane Thomas Jr. 11-yard run up the right side to put the score 42-7 with 9:07 left in the game forcing the start of the running clock.

The Marauders would respond back with another touchdown drive of their own when Sapp went up the gut for five yards to cut the score back to a 28-point gap with 2:30 left in the game making the score 42-14.

The Lions would cap off their state championship win with a final touchdown by Bryant Junius to make it 48-14.

PREVIEW

Back when the classifications came out in March of this year, most people had thought this game would be a matchup between Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) and Chaminade-Madonna. However, that is not the case and we have Clearwater Central Catholic going up against Chaminade-Madonna after the Marauders successfully knocked off the team that knocked off Trinity Christian in the regional finals. However, if the Marauders thought playing University Christian was a challenge in itself, going up against the Lions of Chaminade-Madonna is going to be an even taller order. The Marauders come in as a team that is balanced on the offensive side of the ball with Newton being a dual-threat quarterback along with Sapp being able to carry the ball as well. For the Lions, they got a stud quarterback in Cedrick Bailey who led them to the state championship in Class 3A this year. Defensively, Clearwater Central Catholic will need Andy Jaffe and Curtis Roberts to have a huge game to be able to stop the passing attack that Chaminade-Madonna will bring. For Chaminade-Madonna themselves they got a defense that has been playing lights out on the field against opponents and with Crothers being a dangerous threat on the field along with Ewald in the secondary they will put Marauders in some tough situations of what plays they might want to attempt to run. In the end, no one, not even American Heritage (Plantation) who will play in the Class 2M State Championship next week in Fort Lauderdale could not find a way to victory against the Lions this season. If Clearwater Central Catholic wants to get a win, they will need to play perfect football and find ways to force mistakes and make Chaminade-Madonna have its worse game all season which will be a very hard feat to accomplish.

PREDICTION

Chaminade-Madonna 38, Clearwater Central Catholic 17

With the state semifinals slated tonight around the Sunshine State, 18 teams will punch their tickets to play for state championships over the next two weeks between host sites Tallahassee for Classes 1M, 1S, 1R, and 2S and Fort Lauderdale for Classes 4M, 3M, 2M, 4S, and 3S. Here is a preview of all 18 games slated to take place along with predictions for every game.

Seeding numbers reflect the seed number each team received after the reseeding took place for the state semifinals by the FHSAA.

CLASS 4M

No. 4 Ocoee (9-4) vs. No. 1 Columbus (Miami) (12-1), at Tropical Park, 7 PM – This matchup will feature two solid defenses but when looking at and comparing the strength of schedule between the two teams, Columbus is further ahead along with this being their fifth straight state semifinal appearance outside of the 2020 season during COVID-19. Look for the Explorers to advance on to the Class 4M State Championship in about two weeks’ time in Fort Lauderdale. With this information in hand, this could be a very difficult challenge for Ocoee to overcome against host Columbus. PREDICTION: Columbus 38, Ocoee 20

No. 3 Apopka (10-3) at No. 2 Palm Beach Central (Wellington) (11-1), 7 PM – Before this season Palm Beach Central had only been to the Regional Finals twice in school history (2018, 2021) while Apopka has been to the state semifinals for the third time since 2019. The Blue Darters have a lot more experience when it comes to playing in games like this and that experience is very important to keep in mind as they were a state runner-up in 2021 will lend to a victory on the road with a defense that has been playing lights out here during the playoffs. PREDICTION: Apopka 27, Palm Beach Central 14

CLASS 3M

No. 4 Jesuit (Tampa) (9-3) at No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) (12-0), 7 PM – The Tigers and Raiders meet again for the second time in two years, but this time with a spot in the Class 3M state championship on the line. With both teams being the defending state champions, someone will have to see the dream of repeating come to an end. Given the environment at St. Thomas Aquinas is hostile and hard for visiting teams to come in and win at, the advantage is going to the Raiders despite the visiting Tigers finally coming together strong here late in the season and during the regional playoffs. PREDICTION: St. Thomas Aquinas 35, Jesuit 17

No. 3 Homestead (10-2) at No. 2 Jones (Orlando) (11-1), 7 PM – Homestead has never been this far in school history so this trip to Jones is a historic trip for them. For the host Tigers, were in the state semifinals last year and lost in overtime to Pine Forest (Pensacola) in Class 6A. This time things should be very much different given Jones thrashed Region 1 No. 1 seed in Edgewater (Orlando) last week, but the Tigers should keep in mind that the Broncos are part of that South Florida wave of teams with plenty of talent like they have as well. PREDICTION: Jones 38, Homestead 21

CLASS 2M

No. 4 Lakewood (St. Petersburg) (8-4) vs. No. 1 Miami Central (12-0) at Traz Powell, 7:30 PM – Lakewood is back in the state semifinals for the second straight year and this time faces a more daunting task of going up against who are nationally rank with SBLive and High School Football America (where they are currently No. 1) in Miami Central. The Rockets have been tested a few times this year and have been on the brink of their first loss. Lakewood has tested itself this year with several losses to teams from South Florida including two teams in the state semifinals Palm Beach Central and Homestead accounting for two of the losses. At the end of the day, it is a tough out to play at Traz Powell for a visiting team, and for the host Rockets, they should win and move on to the state championship game in two weeks in Fort Lauderdale. Read more on Lakewood reaching the state semifinals here from SBLive Florida. PREDICTION: Miami Central 37, Lakewood 24

No. 3 Bolles (Jacksonville (9-4) at No. 2 American Heritage (Plantation) (12-1), 7:30 PM – This is an intriguing matchup as these teams have faced each other in the past. However, Bolles was helped through the way the Region 1 bracket played out. However, playing on the road, hours away from home, will be a tough task against the host Patriots. The Patriots have been rolling with a high-powered offense and a defense that is almost like a brick wall in most games. If the Bulldogs can somehow get past the Patriots, the challenge for a state championship would be even tougher with Miami Central the most likely opponent sitting there. At the end of the day, the Patriots are the favorite here and should be able to handle the Bulldogs here in this one to play in the state championship game in their own backyard in two weeks. Read more about American Heritage’s bid for a chance to play for a state title here from SBLive Florida. PREDICTION: American Heritage 42, Bolles 14

CLASS 1M

No. 4 True North (Miami) (9-3) at No. 1 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) (11-0), 7 PM – This is a total mismatch on paper with True North advancing out of the very weak Region 4 while Chaminade taking care of business against Cardinal Newman (West Palm Beach) This Is the visiting Titans first trip to the state semifinals in program history while Chaminade-Madonna is now seeking a seventh straight trip to a state championship game having won four state championships dating back to 2017. If anything, this game will be over quicker than any other game in the state semifinals just given how cohesive the host Lions have been all season long. PREDICTION: Chaminade-Madonna 62, True North 7

No. 3 Clearwater Central Catholic (11-1) at No. 2 University Christian (Jacksonville) (11-1), 7 PM – The host Fighting Christians beat Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) for the first time in 30 years last week in the Region 1 final and that has given them a huge boost of confidence in looking to reach the state championship game for the first time in two years. That win over the Conquerors last week also avenged University Christian’s only loss of the season. However, Clearwater Central Catholic has been a much more thorough team and has played what we believe is a much tougher schedule that includes two teams that have reached the state semifinals in Jesuit (Tampa) and Trinity Catholic (Ocala). Trinity Catholic is the only team that the visiting Marauders have lost to. University Christian is a run-first program and that could be limited given the fact Clearwater Central Catholic’s defense has been a force this season and has gotten stronger as the season has progressed. PREDICTION: Clearwater Central Catholic 34, University Christian 20

CLASS 4S

No. 4 Osceola (Kissimmee) (10-3) vs. No. 1 Lakeland (12-0) at Bryant Stadium, 7:30 PM – This is going to be a treat for football fans to watch this game as this is a rematch from Week 4 where the host Dreadnaughts beat the Kowboys, 25-22. Lakeland has easily handled its playoff opponents in the Region 2 bracket while Osceola had some close calls in the Region 3 bracket, defeating DeLand by only two points in the regional quarterfinals, and Treasure Coast by three points in the regional semifinals. Only last week did the Kowboys have a convincing victory with a 31-7 victory over No. 1 Vero Beach in the regional final. While expectations say this should be a close game given historically how these teams have played each other, the other side says Lakeland is more polished as a team that knows a trip to Fort Lauderdale in two weeks is just four quarters away from them. You can read more on a preview from SBLive Florida here. PREDICTION: Lakeland 35, Osceola 17

No. 3 Buchholz (Gainesville) (10-2) at No. 2 Venice (8-3), 7:30 PM – This is a toss-up game after Buchholz shockingly pulled the upset on No. 1 seed in Region 1, Bartram Trail 21-10 to advance the Bobcats to their second straight semifinal. If anything, the Bobcats are playing some of their best football right now while Venice has been a hard team to figure out during the season with losses to St. Frances Academy out of Maryland and Clearwater Academy International while having a close win against Riverview (Sarasota) in the regular season. It should also be noted that the opponents that the Indians have faced in the regional bracket in Region 4 had much weaker schedules compared to that of the visiting Bobcats. If the Indians come in thinking they will roll the Bobcats, their season will end here, and given how we have seen things from time to time with Venice, Buchholz has a legitimate chance to end Venice’s season here in the state semifinals. PREDICTION: Buchholz 28, Venice 24

CLASS 3S

No. 4 Columbia (Lake City) (9-3) vs. No. 1 Lake Wales (13-0) at Legion Field, 7 PM – Columbia is in its first state semifinal appearance since 2015 where they lost to Viera in this round and Lake Wales is making its first state semifinal appearance since 2013 where they lost to American Heritage (Plantation). Legion Field is a tough place to play for any team that is coming in and visiting, but Lake Wales has not faced a team this season like Columbia that played six teams that reached the playoffs in 2022 including two playing in the state semifinals in Buchholz (Gainesville) and Union County (Lake Butler) whereas none of the five teams that made the playoffs from the host Highlanders’ schedule reached the state semifinals. That alone lends a lot to the Tigers who struggled with consistency early on in the season but have since found their way here by putting together complete games despite all the challenges thrown at them including last week’s overtime game against Choctawhatchee (Fort Walton Beach) in the Region 1 final. I think in the end this will be a very close matchup between the visiting Tigers and the host Highlanders with Columbia playing in their first state championship game since 1997. PREDICTION: Columbia 24, Lake Wales 21

No. 3 Mainland (Daytona Beach) (10-3) at No. 2 Dunbar (Fort Myers) (10-1), 7:30 PM – For the host Tigers, this is their first trip to the state semifinals in program history while the visiting Buccaneers are back in the state semifinals for the first time since 2014 when they lost to eventual Class 6A state champion, Miami Central that year. This matchup is a toss-up because while Mainland has fought some battles this year on the field, Dunbar is representing a huge community in the Fort Myers area that has battled a lot on and off the field, especially with the region still recovering from Hurricane Ian. The Tigers played stout football last week against the No. 1 seed in Region 4 in Naples and their stunning win over the Golden Eagles has propelled the Tigers to new heights. For Mainland, they have been playing consistently well here in the playoffs easily taking down the No. 2 seed in Region 3, Jensen Beach last week while handling region No. 1 seed, Rockledge in the regional semifinals the week before. Overall, expect this game to be a fun one, but the advantage is going to be in Dunbar’s favor. Read more on Dunbar and how they want to keep winning for the community here from SBLive Florida. PREDICTION: Dunbar 27, Mainland 20

CLASS 2S

No. 4 Bishop Verot (Fort Myers) (10-2) at No. 1 Florida High (Tallahassee) (13-0), 7:30 PM – The visiting Vikings have not played in a state semifinal game since 1994 and have not been to a state championship game since that year where they lost to Union County (Lake Butler) who was on the start of an impressive tear of 52-wins that took place between 1994 and 1997. For the host Seminoles, they are in their second straight state semifinal and third overall in the last four years. With this being a long road trip for the Vikings and playing a Florida High team that has gotten better over the course of the season, this will be a tall order of a challenge to overcome if they want to make a return trip to Tallahassee next week for the Class 2S State Championship. PREDICTION: Florida High 31, Bishop Verot 20

No. 3 Cocoa (9-3) at Bradford (12-1), 7:30 PM – Bradford is in the state semifinal for the first since 2004 while Cocoa is in an unprecedented 16th straight state semifinal. The fact the visiting Tigers have been in the state semifinals this many times in a row is unheard of. For the host Tornadoes, they are looking to play in their first state title game since 1985 while the visiting Tigers are looking to play in their eighth overall state championship game dating all the way back to 2008. Cocoa, who finished the 2021 season last year as the Class 4A state runner-up, had a lot of firepower on both offense and defense and played one of the toughest schedules in the state with two of their three losses coming to Jones (Orlando) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), both Class 3M teams and playing in the state semifinals as well this week. For Bradford, the only team they lost to this season in Suwannee (Live Oak) was knocked out last week and had to fight hard in a come-from-behind victory over Baker County (Glen St. Mary) last week. Throw out the seeding numbers in this game as the Tornadoes will be the considerable underdog in this one. PREDICTION: Cocoa 35, Bradford 20

CLASS 1S

No. 4 Munroe Day (Quincy) (6-6) at No. 1 First Baptist (Naples) (8-2), 7:30 PM – The visiting Bobcats are in the first state semifinal appearance in school history and have a daunting task ahead of making a long road trip all the way to Naples to take on the Lions who are in their second straight state semifinal and third overall in school history. Both teams have played some competitive teams this season, however, Munroe Day was able to avenge an earlier regular season and district loss to North Florida Christian in the Region 1 final. For the host Lions, easily dispatched Moore Haven last week in the Region 4 final and have been riding high on a high-powered offense that has dominated teams throughout the season. The only two losses for the Lions have come on the road at Chardon, Ohio in overtime and against Pahokee. Look for the Lions to be in Tallahassee in the Class 1S State Championship game next week. Read more on First Baptist and their coaching continuity heading into the game from SBLive Florida here. PREDICTION: First Baptist 38, Munroe Day 21

No. 3 John Carroll (Fort Pierce) (10-1) at No. 2 Trinity Catholic (Ocala) (8-2), 7:30 PM – Trinity Catholic is in their first state semifinal in two seasons while John Carroll has not played in the state semifinals since 2004 where they lost to Pahokee. With the visiting Golden Rams looking for their first trip to a state championship game and the Celtics looking for their first trip to state since winning it all in Class 2B in 2010, both teams are going to be fired up and looking to make a statement in this one. While neither team has ever faced each other in the playoffs in years prior, you might as well throw all of that out as both teams have been delivering plays on both sides of the ball all season long. One of the host Celtics’ two losses came at the hands of Florida High (Tallahassee) who is playing in the state semifinals this week as well and that alone should give the Celtics an edge along with the home-field advantage of playing a stronger schedule overall. PREDICTION: Trinity Catholic 31, John Carroll 24

CLASS 1R

No. 4 Blountstown (9-4) at No. 1 Hawthorne (10-0), 7:30 PM – The host Hornets are in the state semifinals for the third straight, the fourth time in the last six years and for the fifth time overall in school history while the visiting Tigers are in their first state semifinal appearance since 2019 when the Tigers reached the state championship game that year before falling to eventual champion Madison County. Now this game has had some controversy surrounding it after some complaints were lodged by Pahokee who lost 21-20 to the host Hornets last week. That led to the game almost being moved to Citizens Field about 25 minutes away in Gainesville, but after the Alachua County School District and the school worked with FHSAA to reassure them they would put additional measures in place for this week’s state semifinal game, the game will be played at Annie Mae Phillips Stadium in Hawthorne with head coach Cornelius Ingram sending out a message after things were locked in place to host the game at home. When looking at the teams and comparing the schedules Hawthorne has played more teams that reached the playoffs in 2022 compared to Blountstown including Union County (Lake Butler) which is playing in the state semifinals while Blountstown played Port St. Joe three times which accounts for two of their nine wins on the schedule, but also lost to Northview (Century) who is playing in the other Class 1R state semifinal this week. Overall, with the way things have transpired over the last week in Hawthorne like has the Hornets fired up to get to the state championship game for the third straight year in this one. PREDICTION: Hawthorne 30, Blountstown 20

No. 3 Union County (Lake Butler) (8-2) at No. 2 Northview (Century) (12-0), 7 PM CT – The only game taking place in the Central Time Zone this week, this game will feature two highly competitive teams that have played some tough games this season. For the visiting Tigers, two of the teams they have played on their schedule are also playing in the state semifinals this week with Columbia (Lake City) and Hawthorne. Union County beat Columbia for the first time in over 90 years this year back in Week 2 Union County was close to defeating Hawthorne but saw the lead slip away in the fourth quarter in that game back in Week 8. For the host Chiefs, this is their first trip to the state semifinals since winning the Class 1A state championship in 2012. The Chiefs defeated Blountstown who advanced to the state semifinals this week during the regular season. The biggest factors in this game come down to the visiting Tigers having to make a nearly 6-hour trip to the Panhandle in this one with a time zone change and the fact this is a home-field advantage for the Chiefs who are part of long history and tradition of teams dating back to the Ernest Ward (Walnut Hill) and Century High days which were later merged to form Northview High. PREDICTION: Northview 34, Union County 21
