This will be a tough game for FAMU despite the host Fighting Christians dropping their final two games of the season against larger school programs. University Christian finished season tied for first in the Class 2A AP Poll and ranked No. 2 in Joe Pinkos’ Power Rankings.
No. 3 Seven Rivers Christian (8-2) at No. 2 St. Francis Catholic (8-1), Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Wolves Field, Gainesville — This game marks the first playoff appearance for both teams and both teams look similar on paper with the fact that both teams rush the ball a lot. However, the difference that sets them apart is the host Wolves’ passing game which has kept the team balanced. This could be a high scoring affair. St. Francis Catholic received votes in the final Class 2A AP Poll of the year, while Seven Rivers Christian is ranked No. 5 in Joe Pinkos’ Power Rankings.
It will be a tall order for the visiting Celtics to find a way against a Lions team that has become a state power in Class 2A.

With opening week almost here, it is time to dive into the Preseason rankings here at FloridaHSFootball.com. Class 2A experienced a big gain with the number of teams rejoining from the independent ranks to potentially compete for a playoff spot. This will help make the classification more exciting to watch once again after stagnating for the last few years. Without further ado here are our preseason Class 2A rankings for the 2017 season, Presented by ScoreStream!

2017 CLASS 2A PRESEASON RANKINGS

1. UNIVERSITY CHRISTIAN
2016 RECORD: 10-2
QUICK HIT: The Fighting Christians will get the 2017 season started off quickly with a trip to South Carolina to play Ben Lippen to open the season. With a three-peat in sight, University Christian won’t have it easy this season with a schedule that is very scattered in the mix of teams on the schedule.

2. CHAMPAGNAT
2016 RECORD: 10-2
QUICK HIT: The Lions are likely to only play eight regular season games this year which puts them just in the range to qualify for the playoffs. However, like University Christian the schedule is very scattered with a mix of teams which could either help or hurt them for a playoff spot coming out of Region 4.

3. VICTORY CHRISTIAN
2016 RECORD: 10-2
QUICK HIT: With Tommy Lewis heading down to Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale, there is some cause for concern what might transpire for the storm this season. However, things seem to be confident in Lakeland for another possible deep playoff run.

4. CAMBRIDGE CHRISTIAN
2016 RECORD: 9-1
QUICK HIT: The Lancers came up short last year in making it back to Orlando after reaching the state championship game in 2015. However, if there is one more chance in the tank with the current talent, this will be the year for the Lancers to get back to Orlando.

5. NORTHSIDE CHRISITAN
2016 RECORD: 10-3
QUICK HIT: Mike Alstott led the Mustangs to its best season ever last year, but gone are his son Griffin and several other key playmakers from that squad. However, not all is bad and Northside Christian should be in contention for a playoff spot without a doubt.

THREE ON THE BUBBLE

It is hard to believe it is already Week 8 already and that means the district races will start to sort themselves out of who is a contender and who is really a pretender. However, for some teams, they can punch their tickets to the playoffs this week. Take a look to see who can do what in Class 2A this week with the Week 8 playoff scenarios.

DISTRICT 2A-1

District Standings
North Florida Christian, 0-0
FAMU, 0-0

Skinny
Both teams already have automatic playoff berths, which will be the last year of this issue when the new playoff format comes online and districts are abolished in the lower classes. Very much possible that FAMU ends up in the playoffs as a winless team.

District Game For This Week
None

Scenarios For This Week
None

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#000000″ size=”1″]

DISTRICT 2A-2

District Standings
University Christian, 2-0
Cedar Creek Christian, 1-0
Harvest Community, 0-1
Eagle’s View 0-2

Skinny
Things are shaping up so far like we thought they would since the start of the season, however Harvest Community and Cedar Creek are likely to battle it out for the runner-up spot which wouldn’t be decided until Week 10. University Christian is already guaranteed a spot in a potential district tiebreaker at this point.

District Games For This Week
University Christian at Cedar Creek Christian
Eagle’s View at Harvest Community

Scenarios For This Week
A) University Christian can clinch district championship with win over Cedar Creek Christian
B) Eagle’s View can be eliminated with a loss to Harvest Community.

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#000000″ size=”1″]

DISTRICT 2A-3

District Standings
Warner Christian, 1-0
Trinity Christian (Deltona), 0-0
Halifax Academy, 0-1

Skinny
The district has been shaping up the way we thought so far with Warner Christian and Trinity Christian right in the mix for the two playoff spots in the district. Warner Christian so far is guaranteed at least a spot in a potential district tiebreaker.

District Game For This Week
Warner Christian at Trinity Christian (Deltona)

Scenarios For This Week
A) Warner Christian clinches district championship with a win over Trinity Christian (Deltona).

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#000000″ size=”1″]

DISTRICT 2A-4

District Standings
Foundation Academy, 1-0
Victory Christian, 0-0
Cornerstone Charter, 0-1

Skinny
No surprise that Victory Christian has made a comeback this year and could be the team that takes district crown. We projected them to finish second to Foundation Academy, but at this point things are looking to be flipped here.

District Game For This Week
Foundation Academy at Victory Christian

Scenarios For This Week
A) Foundation Academy clinches district championship with a win over Victory Christian.

DISTRICT 2A-5

District Standings
Cambridge Christian, 1-0
Seffner Christian, 1-1
Carrollwood Day, 0-1

Skinny
The leader of the district is who we thought it would be, but Seffner Christian has turned some heads already this season and is guaranteed at least a spot in a district tiebreaker. Cambridge and Carollwood will not play each other until Week 10 to settle the playoff spots for this district

District Game For This Week
None

Scenarios For This Week
None

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#000000″ size=”1″]

DISTRICT 2A-6

District Standings
Admiral Farragut, 1-0
Northside Christian, 0-0
Indian Rocks Christian, 0-1

Skinny
No surprises here for us in who is controlling the district and who is really in the hunt for the district’s two playoff berths at this point.

District Game For This Week
Indian Rocks Christian at Northside Christian

Scenarios For This Week
A) Admiral Farragut and Northside Christian can clinch playoff berths with a Northside Christian win over Indian Rocks Christian.
B) Indian Rocks Christian can be eliminated with a loss to Northside Christian.

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#000000″ size=”1″]

DISTRICT 2A-7

District Standings
First Baptist (Naples), 4-0
Moore Haven, 3-1
St. John Neumann, 3-1
Community School, 2-1
Southwest Florida Christian, 0-3
Evangelical Christian, 0-3
Marco Island Academy, 0-3

Skinny
Pretty much a logjam at the top for the two playoff berths from this district, but so far we are not surprised that First Baptist is on top. However, St. John Neumann being in the playoff mix after a rough season last year is a big head turner here.

District Games For This Week
Moore Haven at St. John Neumann
Evangelical Christian at Community School
Marco Island Academy at Southwest Florida Christian

Scenarios For This Week
A) Southwest Florida Christian can be eliminated with a loss to Marco Island Academy.
B) Evangelical Christina can be eliminated with a loss to Community School.
C) Marco Island Academy can be eliminated with a loss to Southwest Florida Christian.

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#000000″ size=”1″]

DISTRICT 2A-8

District Standings
Champagnat, 1-0
International School of Broward, 0-0
Village Academy, 0-1

Skinny
Champagnat has surprised some people this season as they are in control of things here with the district. So at this point our initial projection could be a flip of who finishes first and second.

District Game For This Week
Champagnat at International School of Broward

Scenarios For This Week
A) Champagnat can clinch district championship with a win over International School of Broward.

Big time football takes place each year in the Southwest Florida and this year should be no exception. From Bradenton to Naples and over to the muck in Glades and Hendry counties, there will be plenty of football to watch and talk about for the 2015 season.

Travel Time

Several teams in the region will be taking on at least one Out-of-State opponent this season, which has become a way for teams to measure themselves against other top programs from around the country.

This year Manatee, Venice, Marco Island Academy and IMG Academy have all dialed up bus tickets or plane tickets to travel across the country.

Manatee will open the season against Hoover, Alabama, in what will be a tough test for the Hurricanes against a nationally known powerhouse.

Venice will also open the season on the road against Stephenville, Texas. The Indians hope to use this game as a launch point for a highly successful 2015 season as they move back up to Class 7A.

Marco Island Academy will join Venice in traveling to Texas for the season open as they will take on Edgewood as part of a three-day series of games involving teams from Texas and around the country.

For IMG Academy, they will be playing multiple teams from out-of-state as a majority of teams in Florida have rejected advances to play the Ascenders, thus forcing the program to settle on teams from outside Florida.

Coaching Changes

Of over 100-plus coaching changes around the state this offseason, 13 coaching changes took place in Southwest Florida, according to our 2015 Coaches Moving Van.

Barron Collier: Dan Pallente, Mark Jackson

Cardinal Mooney: Josh Smithers, Drew Lascari

Estero: Mark Jackson, Jeff Hanlon

IMG Academy: Chris Weinke, Kevin Wright

Immokalee: Rich Dombrowski, Dale Moore

Island Coast: Wayne Blair, John Schowchow

Lehigh: Nate Sund, James Chaney

Moore Haven: Alphonso Smith, Richard Roudybush

North Port: Larry Detweiler, Brian Hatler

Out-of-Door: Brett Timmons, Ken Sommers

Palmetto Ridge: Ryan Mitchell, Chris Toukonen

St. John Neumann: Alfredo Molina, Simon Codrington III

South Fort Myers: Grant Redhead, Anthony Dixon

Manatee Getting A Jumbotron

The Manatee Hurricanes announced a couple of weeks ago that they will be adding a Jumbotron scoreboard at Hawkins Stadium located on the school’s campus.

The Jumbotron which will measure 15 feet by 28 feet and will feature a Bose surround sound system.

However, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, the Jumbotron has yet to be approved by the School District of Manatee County and was not on the agenda for the end of July meeting as it appears that finalized details are still being worked upon according to Manatee athletic director, Jason Montgomery.

The report also indicated the Jumbotron’s $200,000 cost will be paid for by sponsors and will not be using any taxpayers dollars.

The Jumbotron plans to be installed sometime in October.

Southwest Florida Christian Goes Under The Lights

No one likes playing a football game at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon.

For Southwest Florida Christian, they have done just that for the last six seasons, however, that is changing starting this season.

According to the Fort Myers News-Press, the Fort Myers-based Christian school was able to install lights thanks to a substantial donation that allowed the Kings to play their first game under the lights this past spring. Now, the Kings will be able to play a full home game schedule this season under the lights.

As for the spring game, Southwest Florida Christian defeated LaBelle 22-14 to proclaim the first victory for the Kings, under the lights, according to the report.

Southwest Florida Christian will be rejoining district play this year as team in District 2A-7.
