Without further ado, here at the candidates for 2017 Class 2A Coach of the Year:

• Dennis Marroquin, Hialeah Champagnat Catholic (9-2) – Took the Lions to their second straight state championship game and their first Class 2A title since 2013.

• Bob Dare, Tampa Cambridge Christian (9-3) – Took Cambridge Christian to its second state semifinal appearance in three years.

• Rayburn Greene, Lecanto Seven Rivers Christian (9-3) – Led Seven Rivers Christian to their first playoff berth in school history as well as first playoff win, reaching the Class 2A regional finals.

• Max Manin, Moore Haven (10-1) – Took over as head coach prior to fall practices starting, leading the Terriers to an unbeaten regular season and appearance in the regional finals.

• Damon Jones, Naples St. John Neumann (9-1) – Has revived the football program at St. John Neuman going 14-6 since taking over after a 0-9 season in 2015, leading the Celtics to a perfect record during the regular season and first playoff appearance since 2011.

Without further ado, here at the candidates for 2017 Class 2A Player of the Year:

Offense

• QB Jaylin Jackson, Sr., Tampa Cambridge Christian – A true two-player, Jackson did most of his damage on the offensive side of things responsible for 45 touchdowns through the air or on the ground this season racking up over 3,500 yards of offense in the process.

• RB John Cox, Sr., Moore Haven – Led Class 2A running backs in rushing yards (1,815) and touchdowns (25) as the heart and soul of the Terriers undefeated regular season.

• QB/ATH Clayton Boyd, Sr., Jacksonville University Christian – Boyd was responsible for nearly 3,000 yards of offense through the air or on the ground scoring with 24 passing touchdowns, while rushing for 12 more on the ground leading the Fighting Christians to Orlando for the third straight season.

Defense

• DL Jesus Machado, So., Hialeah Champagnat Catholic – Only a sophomore, Machado made the most of it as one of the leaders of the Lions’ state championship winning defense, collecting 21.5 sacks to go along with 79 tackles, two defensive touchdowns, five forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries.

• LB Khalan Tolson, Sr., St. Petersburg Admiral Farragut – One of the top linebackers in the state the last two seasons, Tolson was a force to be reckoned with, collecting 108 tackles, 37 tackles for loss, 16 sacks and forcing eight fumbles. Also spent time on offense for the Blue Jackets.

• LB Donovan Georges, Sr., Hialeah Champagnat Catholic – Another wrecking ball at linebacker, Georges caused opposing offenses major problems, racking up 17 sacks, while collecting 64 tackles, forcing six fumbles, recovering three fumbles and scoring two defensive touchdowns.

Quick Hits: This is the first year that the visiting Panthers has been in the FHSAA state series and will mark their first playoff appearance in school history. Their 8-1 record goes down as the best regular season in school history after winning the North Florida Football Conference title last week in a 14-12 victory over St. Francis Catholic … Keep an eye on senior quarterback Brian Woodend for St. John Paul II, who has thrown for over 1,500 yards and 23 touchdowns this season. Also, keep an eye on senior running back Nehemiah Mitchell who has helped balance the offense with his rushing attack having over 1,100 yards on the ground and eight touchdowns. .. For the host Eagles, keep an eye on sophomore quarterback Trey Fisher who has thrown for over 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns this season while expecting several players in the backfield including Jaylen Stewart and Jonathan Railey to provide some balance on the offensive attack.

Quick Hits: Another rematch of the regular season where this time it will be Indian Rocks Christian looking to extract some revenge on the visiting Blue Jackets … In their meeting back on October 16, Admiral Farragut upset Indian Rocks Christian at home by a score of 40-35. That game was originally scheduled for September 29 but was rescheduled due to the aftermath of Hurricane Irma … For Indian Rocks Christian you will find of trio players that will most likely carry the ball for the Golden Eagles including Alejandro Bryant, Zant’a Shubert and Tyler Brown-Williams … Former Gaither and Middleton head coach Jason Stokes has been leading the host Golden Eagles as head coach since the midway part of the season when Mark Buchanan had to take a leave of absence due to health issues.

This will be a tough game for FAMU despite the host Fighting Christians dropping their final two games of the season against larger school programs. University Christian finished season tied for first in the Class 2A AP Poll and ranked No. 2 in Joe Pinkos’ Power Rankings.

However, the difference that sets them apart is the host Wolves’ passing game which has kept the team balanced. This could be a high scoring affair. St. Francis Catholic received votes in the final Class 2A AP Poll of the year, while Seven Rivers Christian is ranked No. 5 in Joe Pinkos’ Power Rankings.

2017 CLASS 2A PRESEASON RANKINGS

1. UNIVERSITY CHRISTIAN
2016 RECORD: 10-2
QUICK HIT: The Fighting Christians will get the 2017 season started off quickly with a trip to South Carolina to play Ben Lippen to open the season. With a three-peat in sight, University Christian won’t have it easy this season with a schedule that is very scattered in the mix of teams on the schedule.

2. CHAMPAGNAT
2016 RECORD: 10-2
QUICK HIT: The Lions are likely to only play eight regular season games this year which puts them just in the range to qualify for the playoffs. However, like University Christian the schedule is very scattered with a mix of teams which could either help or hurt them for a playoff spot coming out of Region 4.

3. VICTORY CHRISTIAN
2016 RECORD: 10-2
QUICK HIT: With Tommy Lewis heading down to Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale, there is some cause for concern what might transpire for the storm this season. However, things seem to be confident in Lakeland for another possible deep playoff run.

4. CAMBRIDGE CHRISTIAN
2016 RECORD: 9-1
QUICK HIT: The Lancers came up short last year in making it back to Orlando after reaching the state championship game in 2015. However, if there is one more chance in the tank with the current talent, this will be the year for the Lancers to get back to Orlando.

5. NORTHSIDE CHRISITAN
2016 RECORD: 10-3
QUICK HIT: Mike Alstott led the Mustangs to its best season ever last year, but gone are his son Griffin and several other key playmakers from that squad. However, not all is bad and Northside Christian should be in contention for a playoff spot without a doubt.

Travel Time

Several teams in the region will be taking on at least one Out-of-State opponent this season, which has become a way for teams to measure themselves against other top programs from around the country.

This year Manatee, Venice, Marco Island Academy and IMG Academy have all dialed up bus tickets or plane tickets to travel across the country.

Manatee will open the season against Hoover, Alabama, in what will be a tough test for the Hurricanes against a nationally known powerhouse.

Venice will also open the season on the road against Stephenville, Texas. The Indians hope to use this game as a launch point for a highly successful 2015 season as they move back up to Class 7A.

Marco Island Academy will join Venice in traveling to Texas for the season open as they will take on Edgewood as part of a three-day series of games involving teams from Texas and around the country.

For IMG Academy, they will be playing multiple teams from out-of-state as a majority of teams in Florida have rejected advances to play the Ascenders, thus forcing the program to settle on teams from outside Florida.

Manatee Getting A Jumbotron

The Manatee Hurricanes announced a couple of weeks ago that they will be adding a Jumbotron scoreboard at Hawkins Stadium located on the school’s campus.

The Jumbotron which will measure 15 feet by 28 feet and will feature a Bose surround sound system.

However, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, the Jumbotron has yet to be approved by the School District of Manatee County and was not on the agenda for the end of July meeting as it appears that finalized details are still being worked upon according to Manatee athletic director, Jason Montgomery.

The report also indicated the Jumbotron’s $200,000 cost will be paid for by sponsors and will not be using any taxpayers dollars.

The Jumbotron plans to be installed sometime in October.

Southwest Florida Christian Goes Under The Lights

No one likes playing a football game at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon.

For Southwest Florida Christian, they have done just that for the last six seasons, however, that is changing starting this season.

According to the Fort Myers News-Press, the Fort Myers-based Christian school was able to install lights thanks to a substantial donation that allowed the Kings to play their first game under the lights this past spring. Now, the Kings will be able to play a full home game schedule this season under the lights.

As for the spring game, Southwest Florida Christian defeated LaBelle 22-14 to proclaim the first victory for the Kings, under the lights, according to the report.

Southwest Florida Christian will be rejoining district play this year as team in District 2A-7.
